Pickens weasels out on Swift Boat challenge

Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens recently offered $1 million to anyone who could disprove any of the allegations the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth made about John Kerry's military service. As we reported Friday, Kerry has accepted the offer himself, inviting Pickens to meet him at a mutually agreeable location in Massachusetts or Texas -- and to bring a check made out to the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Pickens has now responded to Kerry's invitation, but not in the "bring it on" way you might expect of a man who's sure of his own righteousness. Pickens doesn't deny that he made the initial challenge, but now that Kerry has accepted, he apparently feels the need to add some conditions.

"In order to disprove the accuracy of the Swift Boat ads, I will ultimately need you to provide the following," he tells Kerry. "(1) The journal you maintained during your service in Vietnam, and (2) Your military record, specifically your service records for the years 1971-1978, and copies of all movies and tapes made during your service."

Oh, and one more thing. If Kerry "cannot prove anything in the Swift Boat ads to be untrue," he'll need to make a $1 million contribution himself to the Medal of Honor Foundation.

Seems like
T. Boone doesn't believe in the spoken word, from a politician that is. Let Kerry produce the evidence.

Who cares about the Swift Boat stuff and Sen. Kerry as well?

We should be concentrating on the issue before us: the PickensPlan and how to best implement it.

Can we all at least agree with the idea that our nation needs a comprehensive energy policy leading to the end
result of independence from foreign sources of fuel along with the use of clean, safe, and reasonably priced
energy here?

We need what Mr Pickens is advocating now. Let's get off foreign oil and use the natural gas and wind we have here
now.

We also need to revitalize our financial system too. For that we need our politicians to enact legislation such as the
FairTax which will free up $100s of billions we waste yearly on the income tax. Those billions do not go to investment
in new and clean technology to get us away from foreign oil. Those billions go to a lot of paperwork and nothing else.
See www.fairtax.org.

At the very least we need to convince our politicians to end the capital gains taxes which tends to stifle the investment
we need now to develope our domestic-based energy system. We also need to look to using the vast solar energy
available in the southwest US. Those things will take many billions of dollars which we cannot afford to waste on filling
out IRS forms.

Thank you
