I cannot believe what I'm reading here about global warming and people "not caring." It is as if global warming is as far out an idea as UFOs were 40 years ago!

Folks, you can wish for the melting ice caps to refreeze, but they're not going to. And the near extinct polar bear? You don't care about him? What is up here? These are real happenings.

When crops that are taken for granted one day are gone the next, perhaps global warming and climate change will be a serious topic. When reservoirs dry up and people hold public prayer sessions in Atlanta for rain (like last year), think about the folly of dismissing global warming.

Last time I checked, we all needed food and water.

Yes, the earth goes through cycles with temp shifts. But nobody has proven that burning fossil fuels with wreckless abandon is without consequence. Nobody.

Wake up. This is too serious to ignore.

PS: After the big heat wave comes a lovely ice age. Don't get too psyched about those lower heating bills. There's a price to be paid.

Actually humanity faces much bigger problems than climate control. The massive problem facing the world in the not so distant future will be that of peak oil as we are rapidly running out of ALL fossil fuels as well as uranium, food and water.

And in the long run, global warming may be good for us. You see, we wont have much fuel to heat our homes, so at least we wont freeze to death as much in a warmer climate when the NG dries up and the grid goes down from brownouts.

In case you missed the memo, the jury is still out on global warming. Many scientists have formed a stronger correlation to the sun's 200 year cycle of warming and cooling than to CO2. But anyway, the current gas price increases and resulting inflation and economic slowdown threaten our jobs. And, without jobs to feed our families, most won't care much weather the earth warmed a tenth of a degree this decade or not. If you read most posts, they are looking to more environmentally friendly alternatives without mention of global warming. And, since global warming seems to be a highly contested debate and tends to polarize people, it is best left out of this forum where we are trying to come together. You see, the left tend to be big global warming buffs, and the right tend to be good stewards of the planet. Both trying to do the same thing for different reasons, so why argue, just do what both sides want -- develop clean energy at cheap prices.
I agree with you on the fact the the jury and proof for that matter is still not there on the global warming issue. Some scientists say it's a real issue others say it is the normal cycle and there is little we humans can do about it. I for one am not ready to jump on the band wagon just because Al Gore says so. If he believes so stronly in what he says he sure doesn't act like it. Huge house, boat, private jets and SUVs, doesn't seem that he is too concerned, he just wants the rest of us to do our part.
The sad thing is that I do care about global warming. Unfortunately the more pressing issues for me are how to pay the bills to get by each month. I recycle my alimunum, paper and plastic without reimbursement of any sort. So, please do not say that it is not a matter of caring; that I do. It is a matter of finding a way for the long term solution to benefit me now because as the head of a single income family my commute to recycle is becoming more of an expense than an immediate benefit.
If you didn't notice, the world has been heating progressively since the ice age. Think about it. Well, actually the past decade, the world has been getting progressively colder. It's true, look it up. It's amazing how easily people jump on ideas like global warming. They are still doing tests on it and we won't know the real results for many more years. If it wasn't for all of the 'experts' (Al Gore is not an expert) and 'speculators' (who we also have to blame for $4.00 gas) we'd probably all be taking a REALISTIC approach to this instead of PANICKING
See, Shawn has the right attitude. And you will find that most people you talk to here do, too. I recycle, Not a scrap of food goes in the garbage can, it all goes to compost. I grow some of my own food. I carpool. I use efficient light bulbs. I make sure I have good tire pressure so that I get the best mileage possible. Every day I consider the impacts I have on this planet and try to ensure that I am a good steward of it. And that brings me to this site and our current goal. We are not here to whine about global warming or get distracted by one candidate or another. No, lets concentrate on an agenda. That agenda is to get us off of foreign oil, and eventually, all oil. And to do that, we need to contact our representatives at all levels of government this week and let them know what we think. It doesn't matter weather they are Democrat, Republican, or Independent, their job may be on the line in November if they don't listen!
Thank you for your comments. Though appreciated I have to reiterate that though I am recycling this is a cost prohibitive venture for me each month versus a gain; therefore, it is actually on my list of things to reconsider. It does not matter what we believe politically because unless your income far exceeds your expenses, you are effected by today's fuel prices. The Picken's Plan has benefit to all who are willing to listen and share.
Instead of "worrying" about a computer modeled future scenario-- try worrying about something worthwhile-- like several million people died last year from starvation-- lack of fresh water-- and curable diseases---- these actually KILLED many more humans -- than even the GW computer model "phantom" GW deaths.

Just let fuel rise another 25-30%-- AND WATCH HOW MANY MORE people die worldwide.
Polar Bears will eat you. If you don't believe me try to give one a “Coke & a Smile.”
Dear SOO

That's the thing about what Mr. Pickens has done here, this plan gets us moving in the right direction on Climate Change. Eisenhower didn't sell the Interstate Highway system on the economic benefits, he sold it so we could move our army around the country when the Russians invaded. But his real intent was as an economic benefit.

Don't worry about Climate Change on these boards, worry about what your city and state zoning laws say about wind turbines, and start working to make them happen where you are.
Joe, that's why we are talking here. Deaths are the greatest tragedy experienced by the cost of rising fuel. It may not have hit home for many of us but it is all around us. The war in Iraq, whether you believe it is over oil or not does not matter, it effects oil prices. Therefore, yes, we as a global nation are effected. This is not the only place in the world that experiences tragedy. This is just a place that at least momentarily if we concentrate our efforts we might be able to influence the outcome.
Global Warming is definitely real and the unprecedented rise of CO2 concentrations in our atmosphere is definitely to blame. 2500 scientists at the IPCC concluded that the chances that the massive rise in CO2 levels was not having a warming effect on our planet were incredibly small. To be completely honest, this is pretty obvious. To think that you can release 100 million years of built up carbon stores, in a matter of 150 years, and have absolutely no effect on the natural cycles of our planet is just plain crazy. To ignore it, pretend it doesn’t exist or that it can’t hurt us is even crazier. What’s more, global warming isn’t the only effect of increased carbon levels. Ocean acidification is a highly documented and very real consequence of carbon emissions as well. The Ph levels of our oceans have been dropping steadily for decades and they are now at a critically low level. As the ocean becomes more acidic, the world’s largest food source—plankton, is dying off, which will cause the world’s largest food chain to collapse if the process isn’t reversed.

If global warming wasn’t real, why would hundreds of countries around the world spend trillions of dollars to reduce their carbon emissions? Do you think that’s just fun for them or that they have nothing better to spend their money on? Come on, get real. Climate Change is without a doubt the most important issue this world has ever faced. Actually let me re-phrase, the most important issue that humans have ever faced. The world will continue regardless of what we do—it’s seen these levels of CO2 before. The problem for us, and the rest of the species on this earth, is that evolution takes millions of years, but we are forever altering our environment over a period of decades. We cannot evolve our way out of this; our only option is to reverse our reckless behavior immediately before it is too late.
