PickensPlan

Any energy plan that does not include Plug IN Electric Cars as its centerpiece is faulty and misguided. The survival of the world depends on the end of the use of oil as soon as possible. Natural gas while cleaner than oil is still a potntial menace to uor environment. Plug in electric cars are the answer. They can be recharged with a domestic solar or wind energy energy system and recharging stations which would only require a simple 110 or 220 outlet. Converting to natural gas is a waste of time and resources. Natural gas still puts pollutants into the air.The electrical grid is the easiest way to get power to cars. Lets put an end to oil. I would rather see the oil industry become extinct than the polar bear. How does Mr Pickens feel about that?
Why has Mr Pickens failed to mention electric cars in the plan?

You can't run existing cars, trucks and trains on electricity. Natural gas lessens our dependence on foreign oil. Electric cars charged by wind and solar are great and will probably be the inevitable outgrowth of this plan.
Cornucopians are only right to a small degree.

There are some 'partial' alternatives, but most are not cheap and none of the alternatives are a seamless exchange for crude.

Such as being able to drive for 40 miles on a change with an electric car. But in reality, we may only be able to go 30 miles and still must leave some juice in the batteries for a reserve. And when we run the useless battery powered A/C, heater and defogger it will cut the ride down even more.

And what about the 600 mile day trips to the beach? On pure electric cars do we take 20 days to get there? If the beach is out, what will happens to the thousands of motels on the route...the restaurants and all the other business dependent on the pilgrimage?

When the cornucopians can pave roads and make roofing shingles out of corn instead of asphalt and make tires out of sewage sludge instead of crude maybe their time will have arrived.

paradigm shift. go through the dark to enter the light.
Let's be real. There will never be an end to oil. There will never be everyone driving electric cars. Yes, we need to reduce our dependence on oil. We need to drill anywhere in and off shore the United States for oil. Our problem is dependence on foreign oil. Oil is energy. Foreign countries control the oil. Therefore they control the energy. When you control the energy of a country then you control that country. The price you pay for everything from a gallon of milk to a package of nuts and bolts is based the price of oil.
The problem with electric cars is the distance allowed by each charge. Consider this though... look what the demand, the huge enormous demand, for computer chips has done to the technology. The computer chip has shrunk in size, meanwhile, increasing its computing compacity at a rate of 50% every 6 months. Now, consider, there is no market for battery powered cars... but, what if there were?!

A good example is the Tesla Roadster... a sports car that gets over 200 miles per charge! If it can be done with a sports car, it can be done with a sedan:

Solar power should definately be included in this discussion of energy. It is clean, more than abundant, and it is free! Again with the demanding market question: what about organic solar cells? There is no market, but look what is being done with organic LED's, or LED in general have created a market for O-LED's (fyi, an LED is simply a solar cell ran in reverse, basically):

The point of my rant: if a TV can be made to be centimeters in thickness, is the inverse of a solar cell, then there is the possibility that we can make organic solar cells that are so thin, they could be applied to paint... this paint could be used to paint our house... our house is then a giant solar cell. This is real people. BUT, the funding for such research is not being distributed or allowed!!! Colleges across this country have grad students and researchers alike looking at this as a goood possibility.

So there: get clean/free energy from the sun, have an electric car, let the car be powered from energy that your house created. Shoudl be the LONG term goal. In the meantime, lets drill our own oil, and begin building an infrastructure in this country for wind AND solar. (it MUST be an AND.... not an or). the end.
Nature Gas for cars ?

There must reasons, Why 53 Countries include Italy, Holland, Japan, Korea.... prefer LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) than CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). All those Government give tax break or money up to 50% of conversion fee or Incentives coupon support to the user of LPG.

Pickens are right,
NG (Natural Gas) is a lot cheaper and can pipe to the users, but its' butane and mileage are way lower than gasoline or LPG. and CNG's tank need 10 more times pressure than LPG, I would not want drive my car with a heavy bomb.

But in USA , I have found out the big problem is LPG price, unless strongly support by the Congress, we are now paying same price as Gasoline, though, 90% or more LPG produce in USA, so we are still intentionally leaking US dollar to the MId-East.

Check here for USA fuel prices,

There is no one answer, Electric Cars, yes. But don't trash a plan because it can't fix everything, this would be a start, a good start. Doesn't mean we can't do other things.
I think there will be a number of solutions. Plug in autos and fuel cell powered vehicles will certainly be a part of the solution.
If one listens and/or watches the Pickens' videos on here, it's clear he himself views his plan as a transitional one. Of course he is not opposed to electric vehicles, plug in hybrids, etc... But remember, those cars have to be charged. Adding more capacity to the electricity grid will be needed for these cars regardless of whether it's wind, NG, nuclear,etc...It is vital that this new capacity be renewable. If we demonstrate we can successfully add a significant amount of wind turbines to the grid, then it will facilitate future wind projects. Don't knock Pickens because he has no magic bullet to ease all our problems overnight
First of all do you know where 90 percent of the electricity for those electric cars will come from a coal or oil powered power plant. we have to do things in steps it cant be over night. But it cant take 40 years either or even 20 for that matter.
Nathan, coal i agree with but oil is out, we are going to need it for the transition. hydro, hydro, hydro, everyday the water flows. Terraform the land to produce mass amounts of ocean water into hydro electricity. It would appear to me to be the only longterm viable option.
Yes, electric cars are probably the long term solution.
In the meantime hybrids and especially natural gas hybrids are a good interim step.
