Well most of us can't imagine America without GM and Ford. And I think if our only choice for cheap automobiles ends up being Japanese it will be the last nail in the coffin for American jobs. But the Bailouts have to be loans and the employees need to fire the CEO's, COO's, CFO's, etc. and take the companies over themselves. They could elect a leader who wouldn't cost them an extra dime. Then in GM's case they need to get rid of so many different brands and focus on Cadillac for the luxury market and Chevy for the electric market. All cars should be able to switch to electric power for in town and whenever they are moving they are recharging the batteries!!

I don't like to put a damper on these efforts to save our big auto makers, but I have heard that one BEEEEG problem is that United Auto Workers union laboreres get $88 an hour, and Toyota guys pay $22/hour. THUS it is hard to stay in business with that high cost of labor and all the fringe benefits they have fought for.

Okay, you figure out that part.

But here is what I think about making a car company efficient: Make 4 models, period. Make them well, make them for years, change itty bitty design elements and do not fix what aint broke. So yes, instead of umpteen models of Ford, you have an F150, an explorer, a Mustang, and a Focus. AND NEVER MIND THE OTHER NICHES. Let Chevrolet make a sports car, a family sedan, a giant Silverado Truck, and an electric VOLT. "Let" well, yes, if we are going to supply bail out money IN ANY FORM, let it b e with big fat strings, one foot thick,
Chrysler can make the sebring convertible, the Barracuda, and two other models. That way they can be efficient and compete. In 1910 Henry said you can have any model you like, so long as it is a model T, and any color you like, so long as it is black. And he made a lot of money and his workers made a lot of money and bought cars from him, and he made more money and more cars and ............so on
Hey Auntie Tutu thanks for reminding me about the Union wages. So I guess we need to bring that back to a reasonable amount and the $22/hr amount sounds more inline with the amount that the rest of American workers earn for a similar job. And your choices for the types of vehicles we would keep making is pretty good too! Maybe we should be CEO's!!!
