Here's what I'd do if I were the government...

I'd buy $34 Billion worth of Car Carriers -- 18 Wheelers with the big engines Detroit makes so well (especially Ford, with the Volvo brand). The government would pay for these in cash, in advance. The auto industry would have its bailout and would live to face another day.

As for these Car Carriers, the auto companies would have a timeline they'd have to follow to design and build a safe, natural gas powered way to transport cars *and people*, building on the existing design of the Car Carrier trucks already running on the highways.

The Department of Transportation would have a parallel timeline they'd have to follow to set up stations along the Interstate Highway System, where people in their cars could be onloaded and offloaded.

Imagine a situation where you'd be able to take your car from the east coast to the west, but not have to burn all that petrol getting there.

Hey;
Just a couple questions. Do I understand your thoughts that we would drive our cars to a pick up spot on the interstate grid, and remain in and load our vehicles on one of the 18 whlrs?
1, Fed law permits us from riding in a vehicle in tow. 2, If we voided that law, depending on the weather we would probably have to run the vehicle engine for a/c and heat. Then there is the bathroom and food breaks.

If your thought is we would load our car and then take a bus or train. Top that with a train fair and I'm affraid most would have to just drive, plus I think it could be a logistic nightmare to meet owners and storage until you reunite them with their vehicle. Who pays the 18 whlr operator?
I once looked into purchasing a truck (f-250) from someone in Texas and have it shipped by 18 whlr to me in Va $650.00. And my truck would have not been the only vehicle on that 18 whlr. It would take two weeks for the company to fill that 18 whlr with a delivery route.
I do know of people who put there cars on Amtrak commutor rail system. A bit time savings and less stress, but not cheaper.
Everything begins with an Idea then we build, modifiy and work to create a workable layout. Keep thinkin.
Best; Tom
The idea is to have pickup stations on the interstate grid, and people would stay in their cars. There would be enough stops that bathroom breaks would be possible during offload/onload stops.

To clarify, this would be for long trips, as an alternative to trains and planes (and automobiles).

The $650 shipping you are referring to is point-to-point, as opposed to something like, for example, Philadelphia to Richmond via I95.
It sounds like a proposal for an interstate auto ferry system. It sounds a feasible if the financial numbers support the effort. How many carriers vfor 34 billion, ect, ect. For 34 billion we could take care of the working class and let the market take care of the American auto industry.
But alas, if we let the market take care of the Auto Industry, it will fail. This will result in the permanent loss of 3 million jobs. Not even $34 billion will cover 3 million people for the rest of their lives.
