Remember the geo metro that got 50mpg, Late 1980's. There was a Ford Fiesta at 45mpg, same era... You can still buy them used but they are coveted. There's no current car like that. But americans will not buy them. And at $1.50 a gallon, sales of pickups and SUVs are back up, sales of honda civic, plumeted as gas prices dropped.
Remember how the oil speculators drove price of oil up, remember there was a bill to outlaw speculating on oil futures due to energy security. Remember it was voted down by the congress and elected government, democrats and republicans alike..

Small displacement engines turbo charged and direct injected with 130 octane CNG could be quite efficient. Add hybrid motors for take off and acceleration, then economy and performance can be had in the same vehicle.
Yes, I just bought a hyundai accent 2 dr for my daughter and it was one of the highest MPG cars I could afford. Yet, it has way too much HP (horsepower) and it could be going 50 or 60 mpg if they would simply trim the power that is put into these little cars.
But they don't because as people drive, compare, they will say, "sluggish", "weak", etc. I think that these cars get worse mileage performance because consumers just demand that OVER the mpg performance. This why I believe we do need mileage standards set by the government for all but actual work trucks that require power. I hate to say it. Because I used to like to have fast cars and such when I was younger. But, with age comes wisdom, this why teenagers don't run our businesses and government. We have to make hard choices, mpg OVER mph.
