PickensPlan

Just launched - a new section on the Pickens Plan website where we will be tracking monthly oil imports:

http://www.pickensplan.com/oilimports/

We want to carry the discussion of how much we spend on importing oil here. How does it affect us as a country and how it may affect you individually.

What are your thoughts?

Hi Sean: We may have only two years, instead of twenty to show significant progress toward energy independence, so let's not do nuclear until the current recession ends. What are CSP plants? GHG = greenhouse gas. Neil

This is an important feature. I believe many individuals, and most media will be very interested - every time a new monthly number is posted.

That said . . .

The presentation is terrible, and by that I mean - really bad, worse than useless, counter-productive. Information is buried in three, unappealing graphics that I originally glossed over (they register visually as "background image"). I literally read the article, wondered where the data was, did a Google search, came back, scratched my head - and finally found it.

If we have no one on staff, surely there must be a graphic artist in the membership. This needs to be "writ large", and should be the first thing anyone notices on the page.

Additional info would also be nice. For example, what did we do last year? How about YTD? Annualized running rate?

Please, let's not waste this opportunity.

Hi Jim -

I appreciate your honest critique and feedback. Thanks!

I want to second Jim Maher's suggestion. I too was confused by the web page though I found the graphics very interesting once I figured it out. It is a terrific idea but needs some visual tweeking.

I agree with Jim as well. It was a bit confusing at first. It was not the most effective way of presenting the data because it was not the thing that jumped out most. There were a lot of imagery, and other things that grab your attention before you ever get to see it.

I like the fact that there are a lot of options for the widgets. But we would need more info in the images... something like a line chart can be made with javascript and ppl can link to it from their websites, you just upgrade the code here and ppl from all over linking to it will have the update on their sites... this is another idea for the data presentation. I use a similar service for oil pricing on my website (they use javascript for it). It can be flash, a php file with image header... i think there are many options.

Per the "About the Plan" area of the website, the 4th pillar of the plan is as follows:
4. Using America's natural gas to replace imported oil as a transportation fuel.

Therefore, in order to provide accurate statistics, the site should ONLY show the amount of imported oil used as a transportation fuel.

Overall a good idea but the information needs to be more tailored to the PP mission statment. Otherwise, the information prosented is too vauge and serves only as propaganda to rile up the uninformed.

excellent ! concrete, tangible numbers to measure. it can only create more interest and motivate as the numbers line up.

It’s all about money. Nobody wants to do anything because it’s right they want to do things because they can turn a profit. If we don’t reduce our dependency on oil this whole thing is going to turn around and bite us. I think we will eventually make a change but the auto companies will do everything they can to make it slow as possible until they can profit from it. Personally I am very frustrated with how slow things are moving when the answer is so obvious. Low oil prices are only temporary.

The word is not just Money its POWER , Run a way greed ,TREASON ! Rome is on fire and the Rich are having a party ! Rich mans Government must be replaced with a government by the people not the Rich ,But that will not happen ,so What do you think will happen now ? By the way Obama is having a Big Party soon ,and a non bidding Governmant contractor has built all the parade floats on the tax payer backs .The party may cost as much as a billion dollars or more before its over , And this contractor has built floats as far back as Trumans Inauguration ,on the tax payers backs . So Obama will have a nice smile on his face as a worthless high buck float zooms by for a few seconds . Its high time stuff like this crap stops and the rats stop wasting money when Rome is burning down fast ! And no more Trillion dollar give a ways to do nothing jet set liers ! We are now at war and its at the front door Understand !

I like it. I will visit often to see what's there.

The monthly statistics on oil imports are far too broad. We need a breakdown of what this oil is used for to target market opportunities:

Transportation

1. How much for transportation?

2. Further breaking down, how much for each type of transportation?

3. How many of these can be converted to natural gas and for what conversion cost?

Power generation

4. Why not more of combined cycle gas-steam power plants?

5. Why not small wind on existing grid or solar?

Residential

6. How much oil for home heating? Why not more natural gas? Why not small wind on existing grid or solar?

The information you seek is on this link.

I am really not sure about this plan, if they don't list the sources and put in links to them.
