I'm a engineer transplant from Colorado and Illinois to Charlotte, NC. Do we just have to many hills and trees here, or is there too much cultural and political resistance to wind and solar here?

Look at a wind map of the country and you'll know why there isn't much interest in wind power in the southeast. There are some offshore areas possible. To be viable you need consistant high volocity winds. Wind speed must be at least 16mph to be viable.
On a different note but may be relative. I moved to southern Wv in Jan '07 to help care for my ailing mother. There are a lot of people in this area that burn thier garbage on the stream banks. So yes there is a cultural barrier.
