there are millions of roof tops that do nothing all day, connected to the grid .
i think we should use these to produce power as well as wind and gas
anybody have any thoughts on this ?
Why does the plan not have this in it?

Wind is the play between cold and hot air, in part created by solar (the sun), hence, wind is solar. The empty roof tops are plenty here, too, in North Carolina. This is sad. I developed a platform to address that problem. Hopefully, others will catch on. Some one wrote below that solar is converting the sun into electricity. I do considerable work in that area. Keep in mind that solar heats up fluids very nicely too, it's not just all about electricity. This is a fun and exciting challenge and a lot of work is before us.

So what if Pickens is going to make money off wind energy generation? At least he's standing up and doing something that will take America off the oil grid and restore our independence. I'm originally from the midwest and there is wind across that part of the country day/night all year. Sun, rain, snow, etc makes no difference on wind generation.

Pickens is putting his money where his mouth is on a huge scale. What have our supposed leaders done for us in DC or even our state governments? Nothing.

Wind power will provide a grid based power supply. Every home in America should have solar panels on the roof. Whatever extra is generated can feed into the grid (for a fee of course to the home owner).

Why keep chasing resources that are finite. What happens after we dig up all the mountains to get the coal. What happens when we've tapped all the oil. Oil and coal should become our backup emergency supplies. Wind and solor can meet our needs.

We as a country just have to come to grips with life as we knew it is over. All new home construction should include a self sufficient solar grid and posibly even a small wind generator. If we make the move to require this change the free market will explode with good paying jobs for anyone willing to work overnight.

I agree that we have to end our dependence on other countries for our basic needs like energy. And with the amount of money leaving our country every year already the infrastructure changes are a drop in the bucket no matter how many zeros are on the end...because it ends our dependence on the middle east.

And if we don't need their oil what do Iran and the other countries over there have other than sand? What does our national economy look like if we become the largest exporter of alternative energy equipment and systems to the other countries of the world. Which way is the cash flowing then?

We just need to accept that it's time to make the move and even if my house looks different, to be off the grid for my power needs day to day would outway any image issue today or tomorrow. Keep it up Pickens. We need to just do this with or without the government. They'll follow along soon enough.

great comment scott you are right on the money what ever ti takes is what we need to do

I priced solar for my new home and the only problem I calculated was after it paid for it's self in about 15-18 years the panels would need replacing. If the life of the panels was longer then I would have covered my entire roof or set up trackers on my hill top.
California offers to help pay for the initial installation but after that your on your own and if your retired or near retirement, that means that you will likley be spending your grocery money on panels when you can least afford it.
Maybe the utility companys should be looking for people that want wind or solar with good locations near the grid but cant afford it's high cost and offer to help.

The point is simply that he's gaming people on at least some level. The end result will be a positive, but to pretend it's purely because he's a benevolent guy is hogwash. If he just came out and said 'hey, I used to be a rich oil guy, but now I'm a wind and natural gas guy and I want to get even richer supplying alternative energy', I could deal with that. The goal is fine, but the deception is not.

I think we are in a war a war of self preservation and a war of change just as we rose to the
occasion in world war two. the american spirit seems to be rising again we don't need to give our wealth away for the short term we need to fight and to inovate and sacrafice for the long term
our government needs to get on board we as americans are innovators
we are not afraid to work we are not afraid to lead and we should not be afraid of sacrafice and change .

I have introduced the Boldest Solar/Housing Initiative ever put forth...
Entire subdivisions of low-cost Modulars with little to no electric bill that retail from $79,900 to $149,900 680sq 2/1 to 1380sq 3/2
Meets the need for low-cost housing and helps over Stressed Grid during PEAK_USAGE hrs as entire subdivisions come on-line becoming virtual mini-generating stations.

As well as helps the environment…
win-win-win.
It is the short term solution to a long term problem.......

the plan includes solar and a couple other alt energies.

Solar panels still do not convert enough of the suns energy into usable electricity. Even with the incentives that Florida gives to residence, the pay back on the money spent to buy and install solar cells is approximately 20 years. This inefficiency is keeping people from using this form of alternative energy.

On the other hand, the solar farms that focus the suns rays into a point which then converts water to steam and steam to electricity appears to be more efficient, although my knowledge on this type of energy is very limited.

If you have questions about CSP (Concentrated Solar Power) please ask away!

For example the 70,000 sq ft of roof could easily accommodate 100kW of generation.
