PickensPlan

I've posted this elsewhere, too. But I think it's worth repeating. Earlier today, I received an email from the folks at MoveOn.org calling attention to Al Gore's vision for America to produce "100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years."

Gore, like T. Boone Pickens, points to our disproportionate dependence on carbon-based fuels as the common thread linking our economic, environmental and national security crises. He notes that "enough wind power blows through the Midwest corridor every day to...meet 100 percent of US electricity demand," and also emphasizes the value of harnessing energy in our solar corridor.

It would seem that Pickens and Gore have a common position on energy. And it's a position that isn't gaining enough traction in the media. MoveOn lamented that Gore's speech was mostly ignored and pleaded with members to help spread the word.

I cannot help but think: Why not work together?

Both camps have interests that are fundamentally the same. Pickens and Gore want an energy policy that achieves a significant reduction in our reliance on foreign oil while moving us solidly in the direction of clean and renewable power. If this is to become something of a national mission, it would certainly help for the Pickens Plan to have wide-ranging bipartisan support. What better way to establish this than an alliance with Al Gore and MoveOn?

Moreover, there's the additional benefit of gaining access to MoveOn's substantial mailing list.

Just a thought.

Cheryl,

Public figures of every political persuasion have a long tradition of flip-flopping on a wide array of issues. Let the people speak!

I don't know. What this movement needs are brillant, genuine people who haven't splashed their political affiliations all over the media like MoveOn and Gore. Some people are repulsed by some of their extreme liberal views. We need this to be a one topic campaign so people don't have the excuse to separate themselves from it due to politicians, organizations, etc. that also support it. Keep it generic...somehow.

Sorry Leon,

Not a big believer in the MoveOn crowd. I am a big believer that corrupting our planet is bad but i gotta say it, global warming is crap. Global warming is a money making scam. (lots of evidence to back this statement up) I do believe however that we should protect the environment as much as possible with sound management and conservation. Getting away from a finite resource in oil when other technology is available or will be available just makes sense. Getting our economy off the foreign oil makes even more sense. Getting rid of politicians, dems or republicans that stand in the way of doing the right thing is paramount. Cutting through the propoganda bovine feces is also paramount and both are tough. I support T Boone because he is putting his money where his mouth is. I know its for profit on his end which is not a bad word and it demonstrates his willingness to do something that is right and if he makes a profit while doing so I agree. It also demonstrates to the business sector that you can make changes for profit without having to worry about infrastructure problems. I hope other billionaires and multi-million dollar corporations take note, particularly the oil industry, the vehicle industry etc... No scrap the MoveOn crowd and look to people who make sense not to get or keep power.

It's going to cost Mr. Pikens a fortune. America is the Saudi Arabian of wind. Even though I don't own a car, my groceries will get cheaper. Go get em T. Boone!!!!

Move On is too politically partisan imho

Does anybody know where Lee Iococca stands on the Pickens Plan? Lee was recently crying out for real leadership to help solve our nations most pressing problems. Boone is just that, a born leader and seemingly a 'boon' to our country's current energy crisis. Thanks for reading...

Hmm... I believe that T. Boone Pickens is a REPUBLICAN.. and the "Global Warming" types are not well liked in "Oil Country". Notice, Mr. Pickens wants to end our dependency on FOREIGN oil.. not oil altogether ;-) He's STILL and oil man looking to make some more money on Wind and Solar now.. he's simply hedging his bets!

Respectfully, what does Republican have to do with anything Paul? Why all the "quotation" marks "Paul"?

Mr. Pickens is spending his own money to bring forward an intelligent energy policy. More than we can say for "Green Gore" or most of our elected officials. If Mr. Pickens should see the financial fruits of his labors while he is still with us, God Bless him for it!

Countless tax dollars have been spent on Gore's "Carbon" hysteria. We need oil, solar, wind, coal, natural gas, nuclear and anything other energy resource America has. The environment will survive and thrive. The Liberal treehuggers will make sure of it, so rest easy. MoveOn has George Soros.....wonder where his money comes from and how much he is spending to save our Nation.

Just my thoughts.

I whole heartedly agree. I also believe that there is nothing wrong with making a profit. If he helps us save money and stop making our enemies rich, I hope his net worth passes both Bill Gates and Warren Buffet combined.

Looks like everyone wants change but only if "their" party gets credit. Kind of a shame. I'm willing to put aside my intense dislike of all things Republican in the name of the economy and the environment and my children's future.
MoveOn is progressive and has tremendous political influence as indicated by the 2006 election. If we really want change why not use all the resources available - including their organization?

Move on and Al Gore have the wrong agenda. They want to "spend" our way out of carbon (which we can't afford) instead of conserving and devoloping habits and tech to save costs (money). Also Al G. is a major player in the Chicago carbon board of trade which will make "zillions" with "cap & trade" (REALLY).

Sent to Mr. Pickens ,
I hope you've read the replies to Mr. D'souza's plan. I agree that aligning with groups or people whose main agenda is political will do too much damage to this movement. If you let this happen you probably would loose 50% of your supporters.
