Am I the only one working on a power supply that will power my own home with wind power? I know the wind won't blow every day but, if I can cut my power bill by 1/3 I'll take it! I can't wait for the Government to do this. I need to make my own power NOW!!!!

In our Aerospacw Customers, we are told the avaerage age is 57 years old. The problem is getting worse.
I have been working as an engineer for 20 years. The reason why average age is getting higher is that we do not value engineers. Why be an engineer? You take the hardest courses in college and the company values the sales force, the managers, CEOs, etc. more than you. Look at television, we glamorize being the boss, the power, money, etc. Why do you think The Apprentice was so successful. Why not skate through college, go to law school and then charge $300/hour. Until we value and convince youth that engineering is worth the toil in college, I am afraid the problem is only going to get worse.
It all depends on what you are into. I love working on cars but I really don't like to fix other peoples' broken stuff. 20+ years ago I went to McLaren Engines on a whim. Put in the application, and to my suprise I was hired. I worked in "Santa's workshop" ever since. The first project I worked on sat on the pole at the 24 hours of Daytona. I was kind of forced to retire from this field after comming down with Epilepsy in 1999.
I agree..... I just graduated and got my engineering degree, I enjoy my work but don't like to talk about it with anyone.....so now when I'm talking to the girls at the bar I take the word "engineer" right out of the discussion and change it to "Product Designer" and then it is way more appealing LOL.
Don't let yourself get in the way of yourself.
Engineer is appealing. You must be talking to low intelligence.
Its wonderful you are working on your own home . A great many people here I think are concerned about us as a nation . 70 % of our fuel is purchased from foreign countries . A great deal of Americans can't afford to put up alternate energy sources . We need an army of voices to tell the Goverment we mean business and want change now ! Windmills Farms in the midwest that can take care of the nations electrical needs . Alternative fuel for cars , natural gas , ethanol . I can only spread the word . Get people to learn and do the math . Email my elected officials . Strenght in numbers and we need numbers fast . Spread the word !
I have an acre of hilltop in Arizona. I am looking to place solar or wind upon it. Can anyone help me with informaton on cost abatements or buybacks?
I would get in touch with your local power company concerning this. Up here we need to get a metering device (net metering) from our power company that meters the power that is generated by the homeowner and sent back to the grid. They will have some safety issues concerning sending power back to the grid. If they have a line off they don't want to endanger people doing repairs by sending current back that they don't know about. As far as a power buy back, we can only zero out our bill. If I make more than I use in a year I will receve somthing called a "Green certificate" that can be traded on the stock market. I am currently researching this. I think your best bet is to go with wind power. For some way cool wind experments and functional windmills made from recycled scrap parts go to otherpower.com .
Please respond about information on power buy back and cost abatement to the inbox on this site.
I think as engineers and scientists, we all have a responsibility to do we have to and share that knowledge with others in this community. You are right about waiting on our governement to take the lead on this. I first became involved in trying to get some friends investing in and supporting a wind research project out West. The company (a major aircraft company) that was funding most of the research was putting some serious research resources into the project, but the politicians out there were not listening to us. Of course gas prices were a non-issue. Now is the time to start acting.

We have to write to our elected officials with intelligent rationale as to why this is so important. Then tell our friends to do the same.
All I can say is take charge of things for you. Get the skills and make your own. Don't wait for others to do the homework. If everybody would power there own house there isn't to much they can do. The best thing anybody can do is to learn more skills. Get your hands dirty.
