What would it take to covert a !/2 ton pickup truck to natural gas?

I think it would basically be the same as converting an engine to run on propane, just with a slightly different regulator setting. I think they have to change the jets in the carb and possibly change the compression ratio, and of course you would have to mount a pressure tank. If it's a diesel you could just add a modified propane injection kit; check out (google) BullyDog propane injection kits online, they probably make one for natural gas too.

CNG cars, todays solution for todays crisis.
By the time NG runs out the Auto and Energy Mfg's will be up to speed with something else.

Who needs a CNG station when you can have it in your own garage!
See the links below - This is a consumer device that hooks to your NG line just like your stove.
It lives in your garage and fills your car at night for about $1.50 a gal.
The coolest part is you don't need to buy a new car, just convert your current junker into a Bi-fuel car, gasoline /CNG best of both worlds.

am getting sick of T. Boone advising not to drill. That is the dumbest thing in the world. He says 300 dollar per barrel oil in 10 years if we keep drilling.

How much will it be if we DO NOT drill ? 600 per barrel ???

There is no reason we can not do both!!

His negative public attitude shows up AFTER he starts the wind mill thing. GIVE ME A BREAK BOONE.

I'm calling BULL PUCKY right here and now

You really need to get educated on this, Fred, or should I say BULL PUCKY? Drilling only delays the inevitable, and to get any kind of payoff, we're talking about at least 4-5 years. Meanwhile, what we have in CNG could be used to rid ourselves of foreign oil...NOW.

Is that so hard to understand?

History: What is now NICOR Gas, but was Northern Illinois Gas had Chrysler K-cars with 4 cylinder engines running on Natural gas. Back then a friend of mine had to drive them. All N-gas was pressurized in a large tank under the back seat. What was bad? Every night the tanks had to be refueled. What was good? The engine looked like new after 100,000 miles and no carbon build up on the heads.
I do know that OHC {of Perth, Western Australia} makes a system which pushing air and fuel into the engine at the same time. The injector is sold on Sea-Doo wave-runners. A friend used the injector and Nos {not air} to get tons of horsepower. You'll need to make a new intake manifold.

There are lots of posts like CNG Outfitters:

Kit Prices

* 8 Cyl. Engine Complete CNG Kit - $1900.00

Tank/Cylinder Prices

* Truck - 15.9" x 60" - 13.6 gallon 121 lbs * - $2980.00

So, for $5000 plus maybe $1000 for installation you could be in business. Another $4000 for a garage NG compressor filling unit brings you up to $10,000. I read that a $4000 rebate is available from the government for NG only cars. I do not know how valid that is, but I would want a dual fuel car and skip the rebate if that is the case.

Or you could convert to ethanol for $600...

Stephen,

Have you gotten the information you were looking for? If not I have the web sites that can tell you if your vehicle is one that has a legal (EPA certified) kit.

THERE IS NO LAW makinng ANY CNG kit ilegal. EPA certified does not equal legal. Only congress can make law and their tamperring law says nothing about a non-certified kit. You do not need to fear the EPA, they are a voluntairy organization.

<<THERE IS NO LAW makinng ANY CNG kit ilegal.>>

TRUE, but like ALL slip and fall accidents on banana peels, you JUST didn't see it coming.

The KITS are not illegal per se. But modifying a vehicle to run on CNG IS tampering. And THAT is the purview of the EPA. If you want to do your own BOMB under the rear seat go ahead, but the only way to do this RIGHT is professionally. And IF you do it on a commercial scale, YOU ARE TAMPERING under EPA regulations.

Lots of home cookin' and conspiracy theories thrive in the underground of ignorance. NG cars work, but I wouldn't want to be in one conjured up by Buddy Epsoms mechanic on the Beverly Hillbilly's.

Tai,

For us to be truly effective, we need to deal with the reality of government. The reality is that our legislators pass our laws. Our bureaucratic agencies are then charged with enforcing our laws. This is why our legislators give our bureaucratic agencies the "power" to enact "administrative rules" that allow them to have "governmental oversight." These administrative rules do, most often, have strong civil teeth.

These bureaucratic agencies work for the government. The government works for us! If we are going to be successful, we must make our legislators enact laws that give our bureaucratic agencies clear direction.

One example of this is Senator Inhofe's "Drive America on Natural Gas Act of 2008." This bill will help CNG conversions. TELL ALL OUR LEGISLATORS TO SUPPORT THIS BILL, AND OTHERS LIKE IT!

Here is a link to the bill:

CNG conversion kits should not be a handyman special. CNG conversion kits need to be affordable and accessible. We need the environment that allows the average soccer mom to drop off the family kid-getter at the local Mr. Goodwrench, have a CNG conversion kit put on, and in a few hours be on her way again.
