PickensPlan

We need Pickens to pick Windturbines made in the US otherwise we are again just shipping our money overseas. The cost for what is calling for is 3 trillion and if that comes from US Windturbine factories that creates jobs if they are imported we are still just shipping our money oveseas.

GE listed as a US maker actually does not manufacture any components in the US. They are just another multinational importing foreign mades goods here.

At least companies like Vestas (Netherlands) and Suzlong (India) have built manufacturing plants here.

riceme.. i see you haven't posted recently.. are you still around?? it's obvious that you are informed regarding wind power and i appreciated your posts.. i'd like to communicate w you if possible.. if you see this please post how i can contact you.. i'll check back periodically.. i'm in gulf breeze.. thx.. mitch
hey now riceme.. good to hear from you.. i'd about given up and happened upon your message.. i'm off 98 in one of those subdivisions w covenants that would prohibit windmills.. obtaining permits for a windmill from City of Gulf Breeze or SR County would be interesting, I'm sure and it wouldn't surprise me to discover Gulf Power would do whatever in order to prevent a paying customer from installing a device that would cause them to lose one cent.. nevertheless, the day is fast coming when alternative energy beyond petroleum will morph from compelling idea to neccessity.. imo...
I found a link here leading to an article which depicted wind graphs of entire US along w list of areas w wind sufficient to wind generated energy feasable.. sadly, florida didn't make the list.. article did not define feasability so one can only imagine if writer was speaking to economics or or if he believed the blades simply wouldn't turn or what.. also not mentioned was type/size hypothetical windmilll used.. whatever the metric was, poor florida was rendered unfeasable.. are you kidding me? he needs to come hang out on the P'Cola Beach fishing pier..
what are your thoughts?? i'm not interested in generating enough electricity to light up the entire neighborhood but i am interested in generating enough for my house w maybe just enough extra to make my meter spin backwards so Gulf Power can send me a check every month..
i couldn't tell you how many KW we consume annually but it has to be alot because my electric bill is obscene.. I can tell you that after Ivan an 6000 W generator just about ran the whole dang house including AC w 2 air handlers running full blast constantly (thank God) plus 2 window ac units and every fan i could get my hands on and a bunch of freezers.. but it was noisy as hell.. even after i put it over the fence and as far off my property as the heavy gauge extention cords would allow..
I find it hard to believe there isn't enough wind around here to spin a few windmill blades sufficient to make enough energy for a house.. but supposing this is true.. the problem wouldn't necessarily be harvesting the energy but rather in storing it. please don't tell me that energy still has to be consumed as soon as it's produced.. got anything up your sleeve on this?? I'll be checking back so please don't unregister or leave dodge.. talk later.
I do Agree Jim. We are perfectly capable of making these things in America.

I agree that it is hard to follow the "money trail" to figure out where they are actually coming from. I hope we can put aside the paritsan crap and get together. My wife and I are following the Pickens Plan because it is the most accessible and most publicized plan available.

We need to be Not Gullible and I applaud you for pointing out the flaws that you see. We must pull together. I liken this to the new Mountain Dew commercials where they have three ropes and everyone is pulling in different directions.

I want to put a small scale wind turbine on our property to offset the greed and malicious avarice of Wall Street and the crap being bruited about by the Futures market. It makes me sick to see onlines articles where they crow about how happy they are that Nigeria is having troubles with militants obstructing oil production.

Greed is killing us all, slowly but surely, by sucking the dollars out of our wallets and sucking the desire to keep fighting out of our hearts.

Thank you for helping to keep us on track Jim. I understand that you are just trying to keep things honest.

I am pushing senators and congressmen to extend the production tax credit to only American made windturbines. We should not be giving tax credits to foreign made windturbines.
You, Jim, are a true American and I support your efforts. We have many opportunities here to not only declare our energy independence from foreign oil but to also boost our struggling economy back to its feet. Domestic, domestic and domestic. The American people have always been leaders in engineering and innovation but we need to say no to the outsourcing of manufacturing. I believe that any movement to encourage American made alterative energy products is a step in the right direction.

I looked at the Dewind web site. They have built 550 wind turbines the last 13 years. Their proven design produces 2 mw at 50 hertz likely for Germany. T. Boone Pickens needs 60 hertz. Dewind did not claim their 2 mw 50 or 60 hertz model is proven, which may mean they installed the first in 2007, and have several more about to be installed. Likely they started out building one wind turbine per month and have built perhaps 20 this year by working 3 shifts, 7 days per week including holidays, mostly the 50 hertz models for installation overseas. They may have another factory under construction, so they can build 50 of the 60 hertz wind turbines in 2009 if they can hire enough qualified employees. GE may have offered to supply 50 turbines that produce 4 mw in 2009 for about the same price with additional discounts in case of late delivery. I'm guessing of course, as web sites rarely give you all the details you want, but hopefully you get the picture. T. Boone Pickens may have ordered some wind turbines from several different sources, including Dewind. There seems to be confusion about wether he ordered 750 or 1000 turbines, so perhaps some of the orders are still being negociated and/or studied by lawyers and engineering consultants.
Now that it looks like pickens plan will succeed, several USA companies are likely scrambling to produce wind turbines in the USA. Likely most of the turbines produced by these start ups before 2012 will be inferior or worse. Haste does make waste most of the time and new start ups can rarely escape some serious errors. We are in a catch 22; we need to have wind farms underconstruction before investors start building factories. and engineering students change their major to wind turbines. Most colleges and universities are slow to go with new trends, so there are likely few colleges where you can major in wind turbines. That bottom line is a severe shortage of qualified employes for the hundred new factories we need to reach the ten year goal of 25% of the USA energy from wind. Neil
You don't really learn about what you are going to do in university. In university you learn the basics, you gain the "language" which are the basics of engineering but you don't really get to know how to do what you are going to do until you find a job. These wind turbine builders just need to hire smart people and teach them about wind power.
I understand that Seimens, a Dutch company has started up wind generating facilities in the area of Ft. Madison Iowa in an old truck body manufacturing plant. I would be a lot more for giving them tax credits than GE if GE is importing most of the parts etc.
Right now there is a limited supply of good comercial size wind turbines available. If Mr. Pickens is buying a thousand at a time the rest of us will have to wait along time just to buy one. Old t-bone may have just cornered the market and no one in thegovernment is smart enough to figure it out. He corners the market, makes everyone think he is great, and gets even richer. What a brilliant man.
Companies should have no trouble finding empty factory space in the US
And US workers

We all need to tell our state and federal office holders we want USA to build all parts of the energy plan to get off imported oil.
We need to tell them we want USA jobs for all parts of the energy plan.
Good job pushing this issue Jim.
