Why people cannot understand drilling today we will only see the first barrel of oil coming out of the ground in more than 5 years? You need to get all the infrastructure built before start drilling. Jeez....

Drilling will not lower that price of gas tomorrow. If it does it just to show the oil price is all speculation. Drilling will only make oil companies rich. The ANWAR oil reserve is equivalent to what US uses in about 6 months. When that is gone what you're going to do?

Short term solution is conservation. Use less oil. Use less gas. We need to stop this addiction!

How does solar power dislpace oil consumption these days?
Well, they're not ready for mass consumption yet, but solar energy on your house could be used to power electric cars. There are now available kits that convert car engines to plug-in electric that you can install yourself.
I get all my household power from the panels on my roof. If I were connected to the public utililtiy i t would be all OIL sourced.
I feel the same. More drilling is just feeding the addiction.

The savings per gallon would be pennies, official studies have already concluded this. Are we willing to risk long-term environmental damage to save 5 cents on a gallon of gas?

The oil companies will sell this oil on the global market, it wouldn't in the least make us any less dependent on foreign countries. Alaska now sends its oil to Asia.

Demand is only going to grow because of the emerging markets in China and India, they have what, 3 billion people between them? All earning higher incomes and wanting a car in the garage. Practically speaking, our reserves won't be enough to decrease the supply problem world-wide.

If we weren't so "high" on our cheap way of getting around, we would realize we have a choice now: get used to high cost gasoline, or look for cheaper (and cleaner) alternatives.
Debra,
You are smarter than at least 73% of the American populace. That's the percentage of the public that favors dilling. Incredible is it nor? Are they underinformed or just plain stupid?
Well, I have to say that most of the U.S. Citizens are just sheep. They do as they are told. It's the thinking person that our politicians have trouble dealing with. Drilling is a temporary fix to a problem that has been around for 35 plus years. We as a society have done nothing to fix this problem and now we are in real trouble. As a nation there is easy fix or no cheap gasoline. Just MPG is what is important.
If anyone has noticed the car manufacturers are not saying highway and city miles, they just say the highest of the two. So what does that tell you about them?
What we as a nation have to do is force the politicians to pass laws which require all auto manufacturers to produce vehicles with rather high MPG's and increase that number every other year. Starting 2010 and by the year 2025 most vehicles purchased will get a minimum of 100 + MPG and that number will continue to climb. This is the only way to get us away from the oil companies.
Alternative energy will also have time to build the infrastructure needed to promote the vehicles which use no oil in any amount.
No kidding the mpg standards are too low! The US car manufacturers have been resisting building more fuel efficient models, and now it's coming back to bite them. Congress was glad to be able to set a standard of 35mpg by 2020 in 2007. That was the first time they overhauled the standards in 30 years!

I was just out buying an energy star refrigerator, and the salesman told me that the law increases the power efficiency standard every year, and the manufacturers have been able to meet them and make increasingly more energy saving appliances. So can't the car manufacturers do the r&d and improve the mpgs? Actually, they are going to have to now, or face bankruptcy, because nobody can afford the fuel for SUVs.
I'm sorry but if anyone thinks that 35 MPG in 2020 is going to make a difference, they are grossly mistaken. Car manufacturers have had all the cards when it comes to MPG's for over 35 years and they have hidden it from the common people because they would hurt the oil companies. By bringing out cars that get 50 or 60 or even 100 MPG would kill the oil companies control and their profit margin.

We are a society who are motivated by the almighty dollar! People in power will destroy others for money. It's the name of the game.

I am sorry, I am the Devils Advocate.
It takes time to change.
I agree but there are no changes currently in line with any politician. And most of these politician have been around for the last 35 year. They for one don't pay for gas we pay for it and #2 there job is carved in stone at least until the next election.
This is a very long time consuming process but it is one that has to get started now. The longer we wait, the harder it is going to be financially.
I say drill as much as possible. If you think there is no more oil out there then ...what are you worried about?....

You need large amounts of energy to produce the silicon for solar cells.

Do the math guys. You can not get blood out of a turnip.

You need lots of coal , natural gas , nuclear, solar and wind. not to mention geothermal and hydro power.

Everyone of these power sources have had protesters saying not in my back yard.
And solar panels can't provide energy for making solar panels? They can if you stop making Oil barons president, and if you stop subisidizing nuclear power plants. Do you know that t not oone Nuclear plant ever put oourt enough energy to make up its subsidized government cost, and THAT is why no new ones got buillt once the subsidies dried up. idn'
t you ever wonder why? France and Russia continued to subsidize, and so they have more plants. And more waste., And more radiaoctive pollution.
You guys who are knocking NRDC and SIerra Club. They don't have Sierra clubs or any environmental groups in China. Did you see the AIR on TV during the Beijing Olympics? If you can call it air. It is partially air, and heavilly loaded with noxious and poisonous particulates. THe top marathon runner in the world has decided not to compete because of the dangers of inhaling that crap for 26 strenuoous miles.
