Why people cannot understand drilling today we will only see the first barrel of oil coming out of the ground in more than 5 years? You need to get all the infrastructure built before start drilling. Jeez....

Drilling will not lower that price of gas tomorrow. If it does it just to show the oil price is all speculation. Drilling will only make oil companies rich. The ANWAR oil reserve is equivalent to what US uses in about 6 months. When that is gone what you're going to do?

Short term solution is conservation. Use less oil. Use less gas. We need to stop this addiction!

Put your car in the garage, start the engine and stand there for one hour each day for the next year, then let me know how your doing. Pollution is real and is causing health problems in the US and other developing countries. We have the knowledge to use clean energy; only greed stands in the path of progress.
Lock,
Don't park your SUV so close to the plants, or move the plants away from your driveway....it's the exhaust fumes that are killing them. Trust me, I have 12 credits in ecology and a micro-climate may exist, but a mere three feet is more like a nano-climate.
Hank,

I have over two hundred credits in science and business and my micro climate is three feet apart. My electric car is in my garage.
Wow 200? That's a lot...I only had a minor in eco. Were you absent that day?
Hank,

you do not like losing do you?
No Lock, I don't:) And if we were keeping score I'd be winning...But fair is fair and win or lose I enjoy the game...don't you? OK your turn, but I'll have to volley back tomorrow....got an early AM appointment no sleep last nite, gotta get some rest. We'll battle tomorrow
First of all, one thing that needs to be recognized is that even if it took 5 years to see the first barrel of oil come out of the ground, even Mr. Pickens plan will take almost that long for the FIRST phase to come on line. To me that means that more drilling is AT LEAST as important in the short-term as the Pickens Plan, although the Pickens Plan has MANY more positive ramifications in the long-term. If we don't begin the process of drilling now, in 5 years people will still be saying "even if we start drilling now, it will take 5 years to see the first barrel of oil come out of the ground".

What is even more devastating against that argument is that in recent days, it has been said by at LEAST 3 of the largest drilling companies in America that premise is untrue. Note I didn't say the OIL COMPANIES, I said DRILLING COMPANIES. They say depending on where you are talking about, we can begin pumping oil in one year in some areas (such as the Dome off the coast of North Florida) to a MAXIMUM of 6 years in ANY of the areas in the U.S. and in ANY off-shore area. The Florida Dome ALONE has an estimated 18 BILLION barrels of oil; enough to provide all the oil we currently import for a period of approx 50 years!! That is due to the proximity of current infrastructure.

It is my belief that we MUST become energy independent because of the damage to our economy and the impact on National Security even if it had NO effect on the cost of gas...but it would!

Just the announcement that we are going to open up all areas for drilling will do more to affect the impact of speculators on the price of oil than ANY bill Congress can pass ATTEMPTING to affect it.
Joe,

hear, hear, welcome to the battle joined. Oil and gas development with a fast track nuclear reactor built on each existing site will bring America to new energy production in years not decades.

"DO IT ALL AND DO IT NOW"
That is correct. We must do all these things as fast as possible. The day to day livelihood of our nation is resting in the hands of a very few people in Russia, the Middle East and Asia. If they decided to stop the pipelines or drain our treasury, our nation would be driven to a complete standstill in just one day. Ask any bond trader on Wall St. or oil trader, what would happen if a couple million barrels a day came off the market.

Ladies and gentlemen, my fellow Americans ...not D's or R's... these conversations are interesting, but please do let me know when you are done having fun, as Hank and others have said, because what binds us is far greater than what separates us.

The longer we debate what each side considers to be an absolute truth, the further we grow apart and the faster we all decline. The only truth is that no one can claim to know the truth except God. All models and theories are useful, but they are all ultimately wrong.

The only thing I can see as the closest truths are this: We cannot fight a war, live or run a nation without energy, so energy is a the number one issue. It is the root issue and is more important than the war in Iraq, the economy, or climate change. It is also in the middle of all these issues.

Secondly, I would never be so arrogant to say that any of you are wrong, you all have an opinion and they are all worthy.

So have we agree on anything yet? Have we agreed that drilling is okay? Have we agreed that compromise is possible? Have we agreed that our mutual survival is at stake and how long and healthy and prosperous our lives are is dependent upon how quickly we can begin working harmoniously?

Speak out but please do think about it first.
Thanks JD,
I think it is time to close this discussion and take a vote.
Mr Hank, as chairman of this jury, I move that we take a vote.
I move that this forum adopt the following statement:
"Whereas we the "Drilling is not a solution" forum, having thoroughly shared our diverse opinions and knowledge of the situation, resolve that the continued production of oil within and around the continental shelf of US territories is not 'the' long term solution to the larger issue of energy production. Given the geopolitical, and economic impact however, we resolve that we should encourage the increased production of oil within our territories as soon as possible."
If this statement is adopted, then we reserve the opportunity to add amendments to this statement to include issues related to how we can encourage domestic production while moving alternative energy research and development to a 'fast track' and removing barriers to conversion to NG and LPG for our transportation needs.

Can we take a vote to see where we are?
Steve,
I know you aren't refering to me as chairman of the jury. (Isn't it foreman of the jury?) But anyway you can call yourself whatever you want. One question: "Who died and made you boss?":)

As for your "resolution", in an earlier post I said I was willing to compromise, not cave in.
however, we are drilling today in new natural gas shale plays domestically that are adding significantly to our nat gas supplies. we can drill for immediate increases in natural gas - we just need to move it to our transportation fleet as the fuel of choice
