People's Petition

Letter #1
Dear Senator Hutchison,

Being a native Houstonian and also one who has always supported you with my 1 vote; I'm asking what our party is doing about the energy problem as T. Boone Pickens is. I have no esteem for Al Gore nor any of his interests which I will not elaborate on. I'm interested in Texas and my party.

I know a few Republicans recently visited ANWR to see for themselves that it is land that will serve no benefit except to the American people. As Boone says and even Al Gore agrees, we import 70% of our oil at a cost of $700 billion a year. Why are we supporting other developing countries that despise us instead of us using our own resources? Is a tree or owl more important than the people? The fires in California are removing trees because of the weather, not man. Global Climate change? I think the focus of that needs to be directed towards China, Russia, and other developing countries trying do enjoy the lifestyle we had with the money we have given them for their oil!

On January 20, 2009, a new President gets sworn in. Meanwhile, I aim to help convince Congress to make major changes towards cleaner, cheaper and domestic energy resources. As you are my Senator, I and Texas know that you are concerned, but what are we who drill for oil on our land and waters doing about it?

Boone Pickens is the only individual that I have seen promoting, and spending his own money to implement a plan. Doesn't our government have any plans or is it up to the voters to do it? I plan to vote for John McCain because what other choice do I have?

I realize that you can not actively support Boone, but it seems you can admire the spirit and devotion to our state and country for his efforts to actually do something instead of just talking about this subject.

The Pickens Group is doing what they can which is at least getting our citizens to talk about it and hopefully contact our elected officials such as yourself to do more. This is pathetic that our country won't use it's own resources: what good will the beauty of America be if none of us can afford to see it due to the lack of energy to get to it?

Hopefully this e-mail is being placed with hundreds of thousands of others that you will use to get our government to do their job!

Thank you for all your work Senator.

Respectfully,

LETTER # 2:

Greetings!
America is in a hole and it's getting deeper every day. We import 70% of our oil at a cost of $700 billion a year - four times the annual cost of the Iraq war. T. Boone Pickens has been an oil man all his life, but he now emphatically states that “this is one emergency we can't drill our way out of. But if we create a new renewable energy network, we can break our addiction to foreign oil.”

On January 20, 2009, a new President gets sworn in. Meanwhile, I aim to help convince Congress to make major changes towards cleaner, cheaper and domestic energy resources. As you are my Congressional representative from this district I want to begin my efforts with you.

To get these changes done, Boone needs our help. Check out the plan. If you think it's worth fighting for, please join the effort.

Some people (cynics) say: "What's in it for Pickens"? I say, who cares! At 80 years old and a billionaire several times over it doesn't really matter how much his estate will be worth eventually. He's given more to charity than 1000 ordinary citizens. More importantly and a better question is, what's in it for US? Answer - our energy independence. Are you tired of seeing hard earned money sent over to our sworn enemies? Will it be painful to see our great country slip into 2nd place, then 3rd place, etc. in the world thanks to our short sighted addiction to oil? I'm sure it will be. Please get outraged and riled up and then please do something meaningful about it. I encourage you to meet with Mr. Pickens and begin to work together on the practical aspects of his plan.

Thank you for reading,

LETTER # 3:
Dear [insert appropriate term, i.e.Senator]:

It is time for a 21st century revolution.

I am certain you share with me the desire to live in an energy independent country. Similarly, I assume you would like to prevent more of United States capital from going to countries that choose to use it against us, not to mention our contributing to the augmentation of other countries while we suffer losses. In lieu of the fact that we have failed previously to take action to avoid this country’s current situation, we should be especially determined in applying an American pioneer spirit toward the development and usage of domestic resources.
[Insert link to Pickens video, if communicating by email. Provide link, if communicating in writing.]

As my [insert appropriate term here, i.e. senator, or modify as needed], you probably realize the swelling concern I, along with my fellow [insert state or national denomyn, i.e. Texans, here], have about the growing need for alternative energies. I aim to help convince you and all sectors of our government to promote changes toward cleaner, cheaper and domestic energy resources. I ask what steps you taking to address this concern. Are you being aggressive enough to get the job done?

T. Boone Pickens is an individual who is introducing, promoting and trying to implement a plan, through an investment of his own time and money. I realize you cannot actively support Mr. Pickens, but I challenge you and the full government - of the people - to investigate his ideas, listen to his plan and make use of his endeavors. If you are not fully versed in the Pickens Plan, please visit his website: He has single handedly started the revolution to move us forward in becoming energy independent.

By way of the Pickens Plan website, concerned and interested parties are able to gather as a group, share ideas and options, and spread the word. Our collective efforts include contacting our elected (and appointed) officials, such as you, eager in getting you to join us in doing more. I feel hopeful that this e-mail will be added to the other hundreds of thousands requesting our government do its job, and do it well.

Thank you for all your work Senator. [insert appropriate term here, i.e. Senator]

Letter # 4
Dear (Insert Presidential Candidate, Senator, Representative, or State Legislator name):

Over $700 billion of this nation’s wealth is transferred to foreign countries this year as a result of the burgeoning U.S. trade deficit. Every credible economist agrees that no society, even one as great as America, can withstand such a colossal wealth transfer away from its shores. Finally a strategy has emerged to attack this problem, and in so doing bring tremendous benefits to our economy, decrease U.S. unemployment, and provide for a cleaner environment. This strategy is called the Pickens Plan. Along with tens of thousands of fellow members, this plan has attracted hundreds of thousands of supporters in a very short time. Why? It simply makes sense.

The Pickens Plan starts with America's natural resources of wind and natural gas. Wind as a major source of energy for our homes and businesses. Natural gas as a major source of transportation fuel for our current and future vehicles. The Pickens Plan is an important step forward in freeing America from the strangle hold of foreign oil.

I support the Pickens Plan, and as my (Senator/Representative) I want you to support it as well!

Sincerely,

(Your Name Here)

Sample INVITE followup email (use from your own email preferably or use Invite feature on PP site)
Subject line: win-win

<>The Pickens Plan movement will help the US develop a decent energy policy
<> Pickens supports the rollout of ALL viable alternative energy solutions
<> Pickens is putting his money where his mouth is
<> Saudi Arabia and their American stooges do not support this Plan...sounds like win-win

I don't know much but I do know this:

<>There is no better viable Plan right now
<>People are slow to move
<>What counts is what you are FOR, not what you are AGAINST
<>I'll keep asking until the Plan can boast 1 million members, voters all.

Thank you for reading.

There I found a really great document; HIGHLY RECOMMENDED; just copy and paste it into your browser: http://api.ning.com/files/xl4*6mKfYgMix*-cga4WtivetVAavz*IwMeJyDa6zvyfkg6NoGycog27*3UtFTtBsckh2haHvU-2Q373495jLFS3tPxMf1Mb/yourlettertoyourcongressman.doc____Hi all -__If you are typical or like me simply lazy, you haven't gone much beyond just being a “member” of the Pickens Plan website group. Which is to say, you are listed and counted as a member, get email updates from the site, may have contributed a few comments to discussions...and that's about it. Even if the Plan garners 1M "members", at this low level of participation they will be of little use. Talk is cheap and frankly so is posting to a discussion group! Here's what an army of supporters (which is what Pickens is calling you guys, an army) ought to do:

Urge everyone to PUSH the plan. Send emails to all your Contacts for example. The easiest way is to use the INVITE feature right on the Pickens website to contact everyone in your Address Book. Even better would be to use your own email program to send these important messages out, because many of the ones sent using the Pickens Plan website may simply end up in your recipients Bulk mail folder. Its not going to do anyone any good if it ends up there. The Plan website gives you the choice of adding your own optional message to the Invite. Maybe some of you would like to provide us lazies with sample messages so we can just cut and paste the one we like best in. Its all about making it as easy as possible for the army to march I believe.

I'm sure many of you can write much better than I can. Please post your letters HERE so we'll all have plenty of ammunition. Thank you.

Hi

I noticed that every hour about ten or twenty new Discussions are started leaving older Discussions, no matter how useful they may be, off the main page everybody opens up to when they click on Forums > Discussions. There are however a couple of Featured Discussions that are always on top and never go away.

My intent in starting the Push The Plan: Cut & Paste Ideas is to prod as many "members" into action. Really useful action. I believe that is the defining purpose of the entire website Boone has set up. However, realizing that we are all procrastinators up to some point and that many of us may not write as convincingly as many others I started thinking of ways to enable ACTION. Talk is cheap but action pays a price in effort. Right now I'll bet that out of 86,000 or so members less than 6% have used the Invite feature and have written to both their Senators and Representative. And they probably never will. The aim should be to make it as easy as possible to really and truly get all members busy Pushing the Plan. That, and the fact that this Discussion will be lost in the avalanche of other discussions started every day is why I am asking you to please take the following request on up to National headquarters: please keep the Push the Plan: Cut & Paste Ideas always on top under Featured Discussions. It might help improve the rate at which members are truly inducted into the Army. If it doesn't get a lot of hits and results are questionable then bump it off with something more effective.

Thanks for reading

McQuillan, maybe the threads of importance, should be tacked (stuck, stickied - whatever the 'make stationary' term might be) to remain at the top of the discussion threads.

And, how about this as a letter to our representatives opener :

Dear ___________,
How about getting your acts together. Here's how: blah, blah, blah.

Reply to This

Good points McQuillan. When I've invited (which I have, using my address book), I've used the invite feature on the PP page, not thinking some invites might be 'junk mail' filtered. I think I'll do a follow-up email.

Something else you mentioned - contacting individual representatives. It would be nice to have representative info made available on the Pickens site, so all interested could have the info link accessible. It wouldn't hurt to have a blurb, something like "Have you contacted your state representatives lately?", along with the rep links, included on/in the PP invite by email feature. A PP page could be dedicated to representative links - to include phone numbers, fax #s, physical and email addresses, websites, et al.

You articulate your thoughts well - a lot to read, but well thought out. Not critiquing your writing capabilities or style, but mentioning it to make a point. We are bombarded by information these days, and it's hard to grab a time to do much reading. The invite to the Pickens Plan needs to be short, succinct and have loads of grabability (nw). The videos provided on the site are great - visuals can grab better than words sometimes. Need both, but they need to be precise - exactly on point - and stirring. In short, this site is VERY busy, to use one word: OVERLOAD.

One more thing ( I might be putting this and the above thoughts on the wrong thread), the Pickens Plan should include conservation! As Americans, we have become energy hogs. If we retrained ourselves to be better and meaningful conservationists, instilling the practice in the upcoming generations (I'm not talking about a TV commercial here, a talk radio sound bite there, or a school program in between, but a true dedicated effort to the cause), we'd gain an extra step or two in reaching the goal. Our good ol' U.S. of A. ('us' of America) has worn a badge of entitlement way too long.

Thank you mssr. You are quite right about the need for short Invites that really grab attention and push the reader into action. I tend to go too heavy on words and sometimes lose the reader. Which is why I often hate to even start a letter.

Please contribute a sample letter to your Congressman or a sample Invite to add to the Cut & Paste collection as soon as you can.

If we can get people going to the Push The Plan Discussion (desperately need your Letters and others to complete the mission) I'll organize the thread daily, puttting all the Cut & Paste sample letters into one Reply as needed in order to keep it always on top of the thread where everyone can see it and use it easily. There ought to be a better way but right now I cannot think of one. Good Luck

Re: "A PP page could be dedicated to representative links - to include phone numbers, fax #s, physical and email addresses, websites, et al."

Excellent idea! A complete List of Governent Contacts always on top of the Featured Discussions... At the bottom of the home page there is a Feedback link. You could send that idea into National. Its clearly needed! GL Phil

Yes, I would agree that a PP "Resources" page is in order...not just for contacting Senators and Representatives, but links to the wealth of information that is out there. I started a little something with a "Resources" post on my PP Blog - that was more wind specific and very shallow.

I'm sure someone could come up with a comprehensive and categorized links resource/library for people to utilize in their reading and research.

My two cents...

As you suggested, McQuillan, I submitted the contact page idea.

Also, I tried to edit my last post, but the system timed out on me. All can see that I borrowed some of yours and Luthor's verbiage. I failed to edit the "Thank You" line. It should read, "Thank you for all your work, [insert appropriate term here, i.e. Senator]." I see a few more needs to edit. For instance,
"I ask what steps are you taking to address this concern." should read, "I ask what steps you are..."
and
"T. Boone Pickens is an individual who is introducing, promoting and trying to implement a plan, through the investment of his own time and money." might read better as, "....through an investment of his own time and money."

Here's a link (as on my previous post) of a government website where names and contact info can be found: http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml
