Letter #1
Dear Senator Hutchison,

Being a native Houstonian and also one who has always supported you with my 1 vote; I'm asking what our party is doing about the energy problem as T. Boone Pickens is. I have no esteem for Al Gore nor any of his interests which I will not elaborate on. I'm interested in Texas and my party.

I know a few Republicans recently visited ANWR to see for themselves that it is land that will serve no benefit except to the American people. As Boone says and even Al Gore agrees, we import 70% of our oil at a cost of $700 billion a year. Why are we supporting other developing countries that despise us instead of us using our own resources? Is a tree or owl more important than the people? The fires in California are removing trees because of the weather, not man. Global Climate change? I think the focus of that needs to be directed towards China, Russia, and other developing countries trying do enjoy the lifestyle we had with the money we have given them for their oil!

On January 20, 2009, a new President gets sworn in. Meanwhile, I aim to help convince Congress to make major changes towards cleaner, cheaper and domestic energy resources. As you are my Senator, I and Texas know that you are concerned, but what are we who drill for oil on our land and waters doing about it?

Boone Pickens is the only individual that I have seen promoting, and spending his own money to implement a plan. Doesn't our government have any plans or is it up to the voters to do it? I plan to vote for John McCain because what other choice do I have?

I realize that you can not actively support Boone, but it seems you can admire the spirit and devotion to our state and country for his efforts to actually do something instead of just talking about this subject.

The Pickens Group is doing what they can which is at least getting our citizens to talk about it and hopefully contact our elected officials such as yourself to do more. This is pathetic that our country won't use it's own resources: what good will the beauty of America be if none of us can afford to see it due to the lack of energy to get to it?

Hopefully this e-mail is being placed with hundreds of thousands of others that you will use to get our government to do their job!

Greetings!
America is in a hole and it's getting deeper every day. We import 70% of our oil at a cost of $700 billion a year - four times the annual cost of the Iraq war. T. Boone Pickens has been an oil man all his life, but he now emphatically states that “this is one emergency we can't drill our way out of. But if we create a new renewable energy network, we can break our addiction to foreign oil.”

On January 20, 2009, a new President gets sworn in. Meanwhile, I aim to help convince Congress to make major changes towards cleaner, cheaper and domestic energy resources. As you are my Congressional representative from this district I want to begin my efforts with you.

To get these changes done, Boone needs our help. Check out the plan. If you think it's worth fighting for, please join the effort.

Some people (cynics) say: "What's in it for Pickens"? I say, who cares! At 80 years old and a billionaire several times over it doesn't really matter how much his estate will be worth eventually. He's given more to charity than 1000 ordinary citizens. More importantly and a better question is, what's in it for US? Answer - our energy independence. Are you tired of seeing hard earned money sent over to our sworn enemies? Will it be painful to see our great country slip into 2nd place, then 3rd place, etc. in the world thanks to our short sighted addiction to oil? I'm sure it will be. Please get outraged and riled up and then please do something meaningful about it. I encourage you to meet with Mr. Pickens and begin to work together on the practical aspects of his plan.

It is time for a 21st century revolution.

I am certain you share with me the desire to live in an energy independent country. Similarly, I assume you would like to prevent more of United States capital from going to countries that choose to use it against us, not to mention our contributing to the augmentation of other countries while we suffer losses. In lieu of the fact that we have failed previously to take action to avoid this country’s current situation, we should be especially determined in applying an American pioneer spirit toward the development and usage of domestic resources.

Are you being aggressive enough to get the job done?

T. Boone Pickens is an individual who is introducing, promoting and trying to implement a plan, through an investment of his own time and money. I realize you cannot actively support Mr. Pickens, but I challenge you and the full government - of the people - to investigate his ideas, listen to his plan and make use of his endeavors. By way of the Pickens Plan website, concerned and interested parties are able to gather as a group, share ideas and options, and spread the word. Our collective efforts include contacting our elected (and appointed) officials, such as you, eager in getting you to join us in doing more. I feel hopeful that this e-mail will be added to the other hundreds of thousands requesting our government do its job, and do it well.

Over $700 billion of this nation’s wealth is transferred to foreign countries this year as a result of the burgeoning U.S. trade deficit. Every credible economist agrees that no society, even one as great as America, can withstand such a colossal wealth transfer away from its shores. Finally a strategy has emerged to attack this problem, and in so doing bring tremendous benefits to our economy, decrease U.S. unemployment, and provide for a cleaner environment. This strategy is called the Pickens Plan. Along with tens of thousands of fellow members, this plan has attracted hundreds of thousands of supporters in a very short time. Why? It simply makes sense.

The Pickens Plan starts with America's natural resources of wind and natural gas. Wind as a major source of energy for our homes and businesses. Natural gas as a major source of transportation fuel for our current and future vehicles. The Pickens Plan is an important step forward in freeing America from the strangle hold of foreign oil.

Even better would be to use your own email program to send these important messages out, because many of the ones sent using the Pickens Plan website may simply end up in your recipients Bulk mail folder. Its not going to do anyone any good if it ends up there. The Plan website gives you the choice of adding your own optional message to the Invite. Maybe some of you would like to provide us lazies with sample messages so we can just cut and paste the one we like best in. Its all about making it as easy as possible for the army to march I believe.

I am now placing the request to this website to view Webcast videos of Mr. Pickens' speaking engagements. Not all of us have the opportunity to experience town hall meetings, etc. The more we view, the more we'll know regarding how to address the multiple questions people have of his plan. It would be great to learn from the teacher!

Dear CO2 Contributor (or actual title if you must),

Please do not pass any legislation attempting to influence the renewable energy movement except that which accomplishes the items below. We do not want the choices that non-energy experts select for us pasted equally to all geographic regions of the country. This is a very diverse area and what works in one region does not work in another. We don't want mandated over growth in any market beyond that industry's capacity to supply it since this will cause price inflation. We have thousands of companies 'on deck' to bring their products and services to the public and we don't want to jeopardize that. We only want an equal and level playing field to compete on so that these products which we have slaved over for years now can compete against the existing oligopolies currently supplying our energy.

There is a better way and it is much cheaper than even the status quo. When considering the economic growth that will result, it will create the greatest period of development in history. We want this but the roadblocks are many. We have products and services to create energy from almost every source imaginable but they need one thing. We also have devices that could automatically reduce their load if asked to but they need one thing. We have vehicles that can decide between charging or selling their current charge back to the grid but they need one thing. We even have display and management devices to assist us in our energy choices but they, again, need one thing. That single need is Smart Net Metering Legislaiton.

I have been promoting a few changes to the so called smart grid. If implimented, these changes will allow instant automated control of all local grid sections, keeping supply in check with demand. It only requires the installation of smart meters and grid sensitive variable electric rates to make it work. It can be safely adopted by any percentage of the populace and only benefits as much as it is adopted that area. It allows Demand Reduction (DR) and Distributed Generation (DG) from any small source to compete fairly in price with the big boys in the cental utility companies. This is the capability of consumer load and consumer based generators can vary their setting by watching a simply price via a broadcasted internet data point.

To accomplish this, with some number of TOU smart meters installed in a given small electrical area, the distribution company maintaining that area simply publishes a real-time price of electricity. This is comprised of their cost to buy from whomever they get it from plus an adder for the cost of the distribution segment. This price is charged by the second to the customers of the smart meters. As grid excess rises and falls throughout the day, this price falls and rises in concert. The incentive is there now for the consumers to purchase Demand Reduction (DR) aware appliances as well as DG systems to reduce their costs at their own cost. Both types of systems can easily react to a variable price to respond instantly. If the price rises, the DG systems that have reserve capacity (including charging PHEVs) will dump power into the grid to lower it and visa-versa. If a steady climb in price is seen over long periods of time, this will become the incentive of more people to install such equipment or for larger 'farms' or generators to locate there. In this way, the consumers decide what price they want to pay for electricity based on how much smart equipment they install.

Should an outage occur or even an overloaded link, the electricity crossing that link rises with the amount of damage. If price rises enough, there would be incentive for DR and DG and more central power to kick in as well as to a nearby region to sell their excess capacity to this region.

I think something like this should be promoted to congress. It eliminates the full grid replacement cost that some people are proposing while making the existing one more stable. Over time, the grid stability and redundancy will naturally increase without further cost. The manufacturers already have many of these products waiting for the market to call for them. The cost to advance this system is fully redundant with the cost of replacement meters which is or is planned to happen regardless. We need to ensure that the new meters have TOU rate and lockable system disconnect features so we can kill many birds with this one stone!

As I see it, this is the single biggest rapid solution to our energy crisis. It will standardize grid interconnection, entice Demand Reduction, Distributed Generation and conservation. And most of all it is paid for by upgrades that are already being planned. Some estimates show that a 30% reduction in grid power can be realized within 5 year's time. How's that for a low cost SMART solution?

In your hearings, you'll be told that this cannot be done and that it will harshly impact the utility companies, but you must be dilligent in determining misleading information from genuine fact. The facts are indisputable in that the free market system not only works very well if left un-micromanaged, but it can be easily translated to the electricity market if the transactions can be guaranteed to remain in real time. Allow no substitutes or compromize on this issue. Following are detailed points needing addressed.

We need nationally recognized and accepted rules for hooking up and handling transactions with the grid. This comes in several parts.

1) Physical interconnect standards. These are the rules that specify that a system must adhere to safety standards like providing a disconnect for the utility company to use when they are working on neighborhood lines. They state, for example, that one meter can be used which can run in both directions or that two seperate meters must be used. They also state the the quality of power sent to the grid must meet frequency, voltage, power factor and synchronization limits. Another sensible one is the anti-islanding feature which auto-detects a grid outage and either shuts down or disconnects the local system from the grid. (We don't want linesmen working on a non-dead "dead" line.)

2) Financial charges and compensation:
These rules standardize the initial connection charges allowed to the utilities, the mandating of real-time load following rates and the coordination of internet publishing of those rates for each different charge zone.

3) Setting up a price manager:
These rules would govern the action and authority of a local entity to maintain balance of grid supply and demand. This would require a grid monitoring action, taken by either autonomous devices or polling transmission and distribution companies. It would set a localized price to be used as an indicator to all suppliers, consumers and transmission entities connected to that segment for power transactions. It would then publish it as publicly available information via internet broadcast protocol.


This information could be used by a) devices that have variable load (like A/C, dishwashers, freezers, pool pumps, electric automobile charging, PHEVs, electric mass transit), b) devices that have variable supply (like onsite generators, PHEVs) and by c) devices that have controllable storage (like PHEVs, flywheels, pumped hydro, CAES, VAR flow batteries, hydrogen storage facilities). Adjacent distribution and transmission areas would similarly trade electricity between themselves to further stabilize the price over larger geographical regions. By large quantities of these devices working in concert to match supply and demand, the grid stability, capacity and tolerance of 'opportunity' and 'intermittant' sources like wind and PV can all be greatly increased. Any longterm trend in price would be incentive to either change large generation capacity in that area or better match the interconnection to a nearby lower price area.

The cost of this would essentially be negative because the only expense born by the regulating body would displace a similar and more expensive limited process that is now required in the existing grid. The gain would be the massively reduced barriers to renewables of all scales, by all types of consumers and in all geographical regions. It would essentially open the electric market to capitalist competition which pits economies of scale by the big guys against low overhead of the little guy.

here is what I sent to my democrat & republican representatives:

I am writing to you all as a concerned voter of the direction of our energy policy. I have seen the commercials for The Pickens Plan and done some research on it and other options over the last year and I think the Pickens Plan does give us a legitimate starting point to wean this country off of its dependence on foreign oil. Generally this policy should be addressed at the Federal and state levels, but I think it is important that all levels of government be involved because not doing anything or certainly dragging our feet, as we have for 30+ years, has far more dire implications.

The Pickens Plan (http://www.pickensplan.com ), if you are not familiar with it, proposes to use the Mid-Western wind belt and wind mills to harness what could amount to 20% of the country’s electricity generation capacity. Currently 22% of the country’s electricity generation comes from natural gas. If wind were to be used then the US could shift natural gas over to run vehicles and possibly reduce our foreign oil imports by 1/3. Natural Gas would be a domestic product and burns cleaner than petroleum products, which would be good for our environment. I’m sure we all have seen the images from Beijing of the air pollution they have over there, and while we have better environmental policies in place, we still should want to lead the world by setting a cleaner example. But the energy policy set forth in the Pickens Plan not only addresses environmental issues but also national security and economic issues as well.

So where and how should we start this process. My request to all of you is this:

1) Check out the Pickens Plan, if you have not already
2) Check out the options currently available for Natural Gas Vehicles & refueling them and consider ways that we can encourage citizens to switch over to these. (By the way I have been looking at alternative fuel vehicles for a couple of years now and driving range and price have always been a huge issue. 3) Lets look at what will need to change from a federal law/ policies perspective, to encourage alternative fuel vehicles. Maybe a higher tax on petroleum based products and no tax on alternative fuel vehicles, but we need to think outside the box, to borrow an overused cliché.
4) Do we need to persuade the utility companies, particularly Natural Gas, in order for them to be more receptive?

Ladies & Gentlemen, this issue is not a Republican or Democrat issue, it should be an American issue and as such we should find a way to work together to successfully start & complete this process. Party politics has gotten extremely divisive over the decades and I think we have forgotten the US motto, “United we stand and divided we fall”. We need our leaders to step forward on this and show the rest of us how to work together to get something accomplished. President Kennedy set a goal in 1962, that before the decade was out we would land a man safely on the moon. His rationale was “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.”

Let’s change the wording slightly and make it our mantra for this cause, “We choose to [develop and implement a new US energy policy within 10 years] and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we [must] accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.”

Thank you all for your time and service to the citizenry of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and North Carolina. I have sent a similar email to our local & state representatives as well.

"The simplicity in T. Boone's plan is what makes it so understandable to all of us that support the movement. There's almost a million of us right now that have signed up in support of Boone's plan to wean this nation away from foreign oil dependency and replace it with natural gas, wind and solar power. What's wrong with spending our dollars right here in the USA on the development of natural gas, wind and solar power which will also help create jobs in a time when the unemployment rate is rising and our dollar is falling? Instead, you want us to continue buying oil from foreign countries, some of which have hated us for years as a result of what we have tried to force upon them.

Boone's plan may seem vague to some and I will admit, parts may still need refining/defining to some of us that are new supporters, but at least there is a plan. The only thing I see coming out of Washington is fighting and the same old rhetoric us older folk have seen for decades. A bunch of do nothings that, just before the elections, make promises that are never kept. Oh I forgot to also mention the Democrats have departed for a 5 week vacation in the midst of our rapidly declining economy. Now the Republicans can blame them for everything not getting done. They will also eventually take vacations rationalizing that they couldn't get anything done anyway because the Democrats are gone. What a joke our government is in this great nation of ours. We deserve better.

In the mean time, all of us, that support Boone and his vision, are working hard at getting the word out to all our friends across the nation. Our numbers are growing by the day, which is a clear sign there's a lot of us that understand there is a goal of no more dependence on foreign oil and a clear plan to get there. I'm sorry you can't see where we are going or don't see how we're going to get there but that's your problem. I do hope you're not standing at the rail road station, still trying to decide whether to get on board or not, because this train's leaving and moving fast.
