Stan,

If we do not do nuclear now we will continue to export most of the $ 700 billion per year and lose America's competitive industrial base. It will be just a matter of time. No oil drilling, no gas drilling, no nuclear, = no economy = no security = no future.
I understand. I'm not against nuclear; I'm for it. I just don't think the "greenies" will let it happen.
If they can't stop things using the court system, some resort to violence or forms of protest. The newsies support them all the way, too. Many greenies are hypocrites (they protest against oil but drive cars, etc.). Even most of the non-hypocrite greenies have no common sense (they are agains logging but want to buy wood furniture. they are against carbon footprints but use electricity in their homes). As you can see in the media, almost everyone believes in global warming now. You will never hear or see that the majority of scientists either do not accept the theory or can definitively take a position on it one way or the other. As you drive down from the mountains, you can see a smog layer over the valleys where there are cities. You can see the air pollution in China on tv. Obviously, this pollution cannot be a good thing for us, but does that mean it causes global warming? Not according to many scientists who in fact think that we may be at the beginning of another ice age. We do have to clean up air pollution but we will still need to use fossil fuels for years to come. There's no other available choice right now. I like your ideas about nuclear power, but as an old pessimist curmudgeon, I'm not seeing it happening.
Stan.\,

Even the founder of the Sierra club has come around and now supports nuclear energy. He now says they made a huge mistake fighting the clean - green nuclear power plants. the Sierra club extremist are now trying to discredit him. So there is support for nuclear but we must push the approval and permit process.
You are right, not everything can be the #1 priority, but everything should be persued. Whether by private enterprise, or the government. If the rabid environmentalist, and their puppets, the PC-Democratic party would stop blocking everything, then we could actually make some progress. We need to persue short-term, AND long-term solutions, and think in terms of a comprehensive solution. The drilling the Democrats opposed 10 years ago would be producing NOW if they hadn't blocked them. It might not be a magic bullet, but it damn sure would have an impact on current oil prices, if it had been approved!!!! You Greenpeace nut-jobs are worried about the inconvenience of a herd of Caribou having to move a few miles while elderly Americans are freezing to death in the winter because they can't afford heat. One human life is worth more than 1,000 Caribou. If you dis-agree, then you should be the one to have to go tell that senior's relatives, who froze to death that you thought a few Caribou were more important than their Grandpa. Your Grandpa or Grandma had to be sacrificed. Sorry, but Caribou are people too. Good luck with that!!!!
Being from Oklahoma ,and drilling about every square inch of land in the state that can produce oil or natural gas ,enviromentally were doing ok.Problems are regulations that keep us from building new refineries. No one want a refinery in there back yard or god forbid a nuclear plant so Pickens plan make the most logical alternative.
Let us build some windmills...Western Oklahoma so windy there no way it could fail.
Take act of congress get a new refinery built...Oklahoma they added new units to Sinclar in Tulsa and Ponca city refinery ..and are starting up some old refineries that were shut down in southern Oklahoma. They didn't pass state leg. ,on building new coal electrical plant...everyone here is in to production of natural gas now...all about the money.
We need to stop polluting the earth with fossil fuels and put our efforts into wind and natural gas. The oil companies have millions of acres and have never drilled. McInsane and his ilk are just using the drilling issue as a political wedge issue.
Can you wind and solar us tomorrow, creative? Yes, eventually we need to wean ouselves from fossil fuels, but unless you have a magic wand, it's gonna take a lot longer than it will to utilize our own assets. That, my dear is the difference between short, and long-term planning. Plan for BOTH!!!!
Those who promote the immediate cessation of our use of fossil fuels miss a huge fundamental point. Our entire inrastructure is currently dependant on fossil fuels.
I drive a tractor-trailer for a living. My carbon footprint aside, you ALL want the stuff to be on the shelf when you go to the store. Untill you perfect the transporter system from Star-Trek, all that stuff will have to be delivered by a truck. Planes move it faster, and a train can haul more, but neither can back-up to a loading dock. A goal is one thing, but maintaining our distribution system is essential. Without it, manufacturers would have to cease, workers would have to be fired, and your consumer experience would be worse than in the old Soviet-Union. Is that what you really want????
Well Charlie, you are oh so right---not to mention the folks who have to commute in their cars and folks who live in rural areas where there is no public transportation. Some of the statements that people are making, about everyone having to live close to their work/stores so they can walk instead of drive, are incredible. Easy for them to say and dictate where we can and cannot live. As you point out, they haven't considered the transportation/freight aspect of oil fuel at all. All of that being said, I don't see how Pickens Plan in any way limits or halts the use of oil for fuel to keep our current economy going and meeting folks transportation needs. He does say that we cannot drill our way out of the problem, but he doesn't say that we should not continue drilling. Or, did I miss something?
Then help us switch to nuclear and wind-solar power for America. Read below posts.
I say no more drilling until we have a sizable percentage of our energy coming from wind and solar. The Dept of Energy was created about 40 years ago to get us off foreign oil. We got suckered back in with cheap oil, for a while. Europe pays about $7.50 per gallon of gas. Guess why they are way ahead of us in alternative forms of energy. Our standard of living AND the amount of energy and other resources that we waste are going to change. Sticking with oil will just make it happen later and harder. IMHO!
