I may be a simpleton but it seems to me that many are thinking in terms of a world economy, world order, etc.. I would like to see us withdraw most of our troops from foreign soil and use them to secure our borders. I would like to see us regain our manufacturing base and produce our own goods and foodstuff. Many countries, Japan for one, use protective tariffs to protect their own industries. Altruistically, all should be handled by the free market. Realistically, the free market is taking away our self-reliance. We just might have to beg the Chinese to sell us guns to fight with if we ever go to war with them. I guess suggesting isolationism is like waving a cross in front of dracula, but I would like to see us at least go in that direction for awhile.
Stan,

The world is a big place and a really big market place. Think for a minute if we had trade barriers, would we dominate the computer and software (dot.com) markets? American industries are in a constant state of flux, ever changing, ever adapting, ever adjusting to a changing market place, ever competing with all comers.

Energy, both in human terms and physical terms must be extremely productive for each unit of cost or America will fail. Our standard of living will decline and hope for a better tomorrow will dull our work ethic. The end will be ugly, look at Russia's treatment of old Europe, fight us and we will cut off your oil and gas.
I'm not suggesting total isolationism. I do believe that we have shipped too much of our manufacturing base offshore. I understand that our corporations can make more $$ by using cheaper labor in foreign countries. I'm sure their profits have increased from it and some people will say that economies of scale must prevail. Of course those foreign countries are happy to get the jobs; Who wouldn't be? I still question if this is the best course for the workers in our country. I apologize for this digression from the energy issue, but it seems that I recall one of Pickens' points being creation of more American jobs via his plan.
Stan,

We all export our jobs every day, you could grow your own food but you choice is to trade your labor for value (money) that the farmer will take to feed your family. This expands to medical, transportation, TVs, and every item on earth. The barter (trade) money system provide economies of scale and lets humans increase their standard of living.

This relevant to the TBP plan because America got into the energy problem because government and environmental law suits forced energy production out of America. Nuclear, oil, gas, coal, and many manufacturing plants were forced to move or close because they could not price their products at the world price. So America lost those industries; France is now the leader with Japan in nuclear power designs that were based on American inventions.
many manufacturing plants were forced to move or close because they could not price their products at the world price. So America lost those industries>>

Yes, Lock, I agree. My point is that we made a mistake by not addressing the issue of keeping jobs here in the USA. Hey, maybe I'm an alarmist, but regardless of the vagaries of world economics, I think that we are in deep doo doo.
Stan,

I am old and been through it all before. No one cared when the semiconductor industry exported assembly jobs to Honk Kong and Asia 40 years ago. In fact they said Americans do not want to work through a microscope and Asians do. So all sides have switched and now we want all jobs; this is called adaptation to reality.

Adaptation to reality is what is occurring in the energy market today. America is blessed with abundant natural resources and it is easy to predict the next boom industry to replace dot.com and real estate; it is "ENERGY" boom and we will lead it after we drag the stupid along to prosperity for all.

Transform the auto lines to make wind, solar, and nuclear power generation parts and watch the US take flight. Oh yea, we have to change congress people, vote for new ones that support energy.

The future is bright and beautiful if you look at the potential. America has the brains, resources, cash, knowledge and all the requirements if we get "GOVERNMENT THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY".
Larry.

I come from little companies that owned a 108 operating divisions when I left in the 70's as a VP at age 28. Profits drive everything in a free enterprise society, capital formation requires the corporation model, these two many seam compatible but they are diametrically opposed. Free enterprise encourages innovation and change, corporate goals dictate profits in the short run in America, Asia is long term. The difference is clear when you see innovation that lacks capital (The weed eater comes to mind) corporations can raise money in the investment market innovators must borrow from money lenders.

When risk is on the market success is not quite as important as when your A_ _ is on the line. You see the government is your unwelcome partner, they will take about half of your gains but will not contribute anything to your loses. It is a great country huh?

As to your consumption question, every transaction on the earth is addressed to consumption. Industries build what sells, farmers grow what sells, preachers preach what sells. It all about consumption.
Nothing wrong with consumption. You're right it drives everything. We just have to manage our "consumption" of petroleum a little better
Larry,

Again we must return to the world of economics. Your work provides you with money that the business values less than your work. You now give the money to the grocery store for food that they value less than your money. The grocery store takes the money to Korea for building steel which they value more than the money. Korea takes the money because they value it more than the steel. Korea now buys beef from Australia with the money.

The circle works on a village level, a city level, a state level and on the global level. Consumption is driven by needs. Needs in return drive production. America has more manufacturing jobs today than fifty years ago; a lot of small companies producing items that needs define.

A little spoken of fact is that China lost more manufacturing jobs last year than America !!! Go figure why we never read about this or see it on TV ????

The real problem to the ability to produce here at home any and all items needed for nation defense or economic defense is the lack of energy production. If low cost energy is available, then we can build steel plants in months, factories in months, train the works force needed in months. if you think not, read about the WWII industrial build up and Kaiser's ship factory.

The free enterprise economic system is the best engine for solutions to needs in the history of the world.
Dan,

Oil is being made today as we speak. The product will not be gone when we burn it, the earth makes oil every day. Fossil fuels will be on earth forever carbon recycles through the natural systems. However there are more efficient energy production systems like nuclear and wind/solar. Rapid transit does not work without huge tax subsidies even in Europe gas taxes of $4 a gallon pay for trains.

High taxes used to social engineer have never worked long term because competition shows them to be expensive and unneeded. The free enterprise system provides goods and services at the best price and quality; this includes energy if government would just get out of the way.
Lock, I agree with you for the most part. However, there are folks who think that everyone can just get on public transit and forget about their cars. There are too many exceptions to this in terms of no public transit being available. For those of us who live in the country, I guess we are supposed to sell our cars and buy horses?
Dan. I'm not against mass transit. When I was in the bay area, I took it everyday to work but now I live in the country. They are not going to put mass transit out here because, as you point out, there is no demand. I would love to see a fast rail train that runs the length of CA and maybe even up through OR to Seattle, but that probably won't happen in my lifetime; I'm 69. So you see, Dan, I'm left what I can specifically do. I' ve already quit taking trips either flying or driving long distances. I try to plan my shopping, doctors, etc to cut down on running around. I've written all of my elected state and federal officials to support Picken's Plan. If I'm able to convert our car to cng, I'll do that when it is economically possible for us to do so or when our car wears out we might be able to get a new cng car if there is a fuel source available. Yes, Dan, we can all do something but not everyone can do specifically what you are doing. This is a very complex problem that was years in the making since we didn't learn from our past mistakes. Get on the ball and MAKE my local governement supply me with 24hr a day basic service?? Not gonna happen here because my fellow citizens won't give up their cars. I really haven't seen a decrease in driving due to the increased cost of gasoline and there won't be any decrease here until it reaches $20 a gallon. Some folks are buying motor scooters though. Dan, we are both in support of this plan, but I truly believe that the vast majority of my fellow Americans just don't get it. And, no, I don't have an answer for that one.
