Since 2007, I have been watching the world scramble to figure out where all of America's wealth has went. They have all but realized the money everyone is wondering about was just spent filling their gas tank. The billions of dollars wasted every year on oil until now has not really affected out pocketbooks. Probably because we were supposedly the richest nation in the world, but this problem plays out just like any other problem concerning a person (only this time I speak of the entire U.S.) coming into riches for the first time, only this is based on a much larger scale.

My stepfather (Charles Mariano) won a million dollars ($750,000 after taxes), so just imagine how much taxes are being charged on a few hundred billion being spent to buy more oil from the middle east and other oil exporters. He spent the majority of it on real estate, and now he is broke, so to continue the analogy, America came into riches many years ago, since the dawn of the gasoline engine and other manufacturing modernizations, it has earned more money than anyone could ever imagine ( we can imagine it now because our deficit is up to 11 trillion dollars), now after decades of paying other countries to provide us energy, everyone is wondering where their money has went. Ill tell you where - to foreign nations. Lets recap, America- land of the bad investors, puts more money into the energy business than any other nation, thus America ends up controlling most of the world trade. After years of scientists telling our nations leaders there is not enough resources, and the fact we are going to offset the climate of the planet (our only planet!), they are realizing that scientists were right.

Our top businessmen no longer has the ability to invest what it would take to free ourselves from the oil trade, and if they do have then they do not want to spend it, maybe because they too themselves see what I am talking about coming. If only these businessmen would start the dependence anyways, I live in Florida, which has 3 things not every state has...

1. Solar- We are the sunshine state, do I need to elaborate?
2. More miles of beach than almost any other state which brings me to Ocean current power. There is currently only one generation station from which uses Tidal power but Im not speaking Tidal, I'm saying current (as in longshore current) which can be used to spin generators and provide the second energy source.

And on a side note the type of generators some businesses are placing at the front of estuaries is not a great idea either. They are disrupting the ecosystems contained within the estuary by been placing the generators directly in front of the mouth of the river, making them solely "Tidal generators". I'm talking about natural ocean current which runs along the eastern seaboard and along the bottom of the ocean, I know it runs along the bottom because the oceans current drives our planets climate, this is all common knowledge found in most Earth Science books. The current runs North along the bottom of the ocean (which is where the current generators would be placed) and south along the top of the water due to the natural current of the ocean.

3. Wind- we have the gulf stream, lots of hurricanes (which would most likely provide even more power- or just a small stock pile of what we would be able to capture)

I would love to speak with anyone who is willing to listen to me but not sure how to get any of this started, even if its small cities first and big cities later, America has to start somewhere, because we cant keep paying our gas bill, it's wasting American fortunes and not guaranteeing our future. Renewable energies would give people a reliable future that will not be used up or dissipated within 50- 100 years such as gas and oil. Renewable energies are hear to stay and when people invest in these energies it's investing in our own country, this money goes to our country not the middle east, so I do not see why more people do not already invest in renewable energies. They are throwing there millions away.

Most of what you typed is correct. 1 Yes Florida is the Sunshine State, but is only about 1/2 as sunny as Nevada, and our many tall trees interfere with gathering solar energy. I live in Jacksonville and one of the best locations for solar energy is about 50 miles South of here.
Many skilled scientists have analyzed ocean water energy, some small scale pilot programs are operational, a few have operated for decades. Even when the projects have been sold, a profit is rare. Typically it is many small details that eat up the profit.
The Gulf Stream does move North near the surface at about 5 mph, a few hundred miles off the East Coast of Florida in deep water. 5 MPH is fast enough to generate electricity, but the turbine needs to be anchored to the bottom, miles below. The cost of several miles of anchor cable is high. On the optimistic side, carbon fiber cables are now available which are light, so they almost float, so the surface assembly needs much less buoyancy, reducing initial cost, if not more vulnerable to storm damage = hurricanes often travel North over the Gulf Stream. Also some successful HVDC cables are in use to transport large quantities of electricity hundred of miles along the sea bottom at less than 50% loss. Put HVDC in wikipedia for lots of details.
A person on the www.space.com forum pushed an idea for mile long tubes of huge dimensions which increased the speed of the gulf stream water though the turbines. None of us were sure that it would work as claimed, but maybe.
I'm not aware of "longshore current" Have you more details? Is this something like undertow which occasionally drowned a swimmer?

There are a few operational water flow turbines in the East River in New York City. This technology is likely usable between some of the Florida Keys to harness tide flow. Do you have any details on the one Florida tide generating station? My guess is less than 5 MPH flow means not cost effective, unless 24/7. We can expect some damage to living creatures with any energy system. My guess is we need to save ourselves and get off foreign oil with only minor consideration for the creatures that are injured. Billions of humans may die soon unless we get off foreign oil.
Possibly the Gulf stream anchored turbines can also have some wind turbines and some concentrating solar energy plus some OTEC Consult wikipedia for lots of details. Neil
