Oscar winner director Michael Moore has planed to launch a comedy festival in his adopted northern Michigan hometown of Traverse City.
Moore said Saturday the project involves cooperation with comedian Jeff Garlin who will help organize the Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival.
The festival is slated to present movies, stand-up and sketch comedy. They have not announced any schedule for next year's kickoff event.
"We've actually talked to some great people - I don't want to mention any names right now - who are going to come to Traverse City for this first comedy festival," said Moore, a filmmaker, author and Michigan native. "I think you'll be very pleased."
Moore and Garlin announced their plans at the fifth annual Traverse City Film Festival, which ends Sunday.
The 54-year-old director-activist won an Oscar for his 2002 Bowling for Columbine. His 2004 Fahrenheit 9/11 was a top-grossing documentary.
Moore has explored globalization, large corporations, gun ownership, the Iraq war, US President George W. Bush and the American health care system in his written and cinematic works. He was named by Time Magazine as one of the world's 100 most influential people in 2005.
