I have been thinking about taxes on fuel since the Govenor has proposed a 6% sales tax on gasoline in Maryland.      As an incentive to develop natural gas infrastructure and to incentivize development in longer range natural gas vehicles and the sale of natural gas vehicles has anyone ever proposed a reverse federal tax, say -95% or so so that natural gas is esentially free to anyone who purchases a natural gas vehicle?

I understand that some companies are offering incentives to fleet trucks to supply cng such that the operating costs are equivalent to diesel.  Im just wondering if there is anything our nation can do to push technology and increased use of natural gas in the private auto sector.  Heck  charging a higher gasoline tax to subsidize this would be ok with me.
