We've lived in a PV Solar house since 1997.THe panels and system cost only $9750 for a three bedroom house. Solar is pratical NOW! So go solar! . Anyway, if you can't afford the $15,000 start up costs(what it cost in 2007 for our new house) in cash, use a firm that puts the system in, and then lets you have 10 years to pay it off---WHILE NOT PAYING AN ELECTRIC BILL. AFTER a few years you get your energy for free! FIguring the utility bill s I did not have to pay, at our high rates here in Hawaii County, it took just 4 years and 3 months for payback for my household, and that is NOT counting government rebates.
Stop the talk about NUCLEAR WHAT DO YOU THINK IS POWERING MY COMPUTER AS WE SPEAK? Because Halliburton and Chevron are unable to OWN THE SUN, they cannot corner the market and profit from it. So they will be fighting us on this for decades yet. Ignore them. Trust those of us who are veteran SOLAR POWER USERS. Just do it. Yes, there are ways to finance the photovoltaic installation, too. This is not futuristic thinking. SOLAR PANELS ARE AVAILABLE NOW AND THEY WORK. .They are guaranteed for 25 years, and may well last 50 years!
Please note, this discussion has been a magnate for those uclear afficionados who are simply foaming at the mouth because of the widespread application of photo voltaic panels for getting sum power from your own south facing roof. Like Halliburtion, these dudes, A-1, DD, DE, etc are enraged that somehow everyman may be able to slip out from under his obligations to the mega industrial complex. And somehow, they oppose any attempt at going back to American values of pulling your own weight, independence, and self-sufficiency. And oh yes, in our very wet climate, we get more days of rain than days of full sun, so naturally we have a full on rain catchment system with water storage tanks for household and llivestock water supply. Look up, and you may find a long term solution that will even, in a couple of years, charge up your electric car for you during the day, at home or in the downtown parking garage.

Y can't believe that even Obama is still etalking nuclear power edevelopment. Solaer is cleaen, easy, panels last decades, and Nuclear can only suervivve ewith massive governmenet subsidy. And look at what was on the TV News tonight about Japan---etheye are about to dump massive amounts of nuclear waste into the oceaen. Stop buying TOYOTAS AND GET THEIR ATTENTION< folks.
Hello, I recently blogged about a new rooftop solar energy solution by Conserval Engineering, Inc.

For people here in HAWAII, just north of Hilo A solar Company called THe Alternate Source has just started dealing in corrugated roofing with built in solar collectors. He is working with our local building supply firm HPM that makes the roofing. SHipping is always a problem, so if you are in Hawaii, buy it hjere. If you are in COlorado, buy it there. THese roofing panels look very tough!
there is a company that will be renting them, but the waiting list is 1 year. This is a better choice for most home owners as not can really afford to spend anymore than they are currently to support their homes and families. the current tax incentives for any alternatives are next to nil.
I idea seems to be pay now or pay big time every day between now and later. I look at PV as energy price insurance. Who knows where the prices will be 5-10 years from now? So, you refinance and pay $10k for a solar panel system that was bought down by 1/2 by the state. The simple payback is still 20 years, but it is now a valid sale point for the house.
Better than that way, find one of the companies who finances on their own. Without startup costs to you they install the system on your roof, and let yo buy it from them like you were buying a Prius or a Honda Civic. You pay it off in ten years, with built in financing, and at the end they just go away and leave you owning your system free and clear. AND of course, to off set the monthly expense of buying the $15000 system, YOU ARE NOT PAYING ANY ELECTRIC BILL. Win win situation. So no excuses for the ones who say it costs too much. For some, it will cost NOTHING if they are in an area with expensive electric utilitiese, like Hawaii, where thee electric company doesnt even have to ASK to pass on extra fuel costs. THey got the legislature to allow them to do it automatically, so they ahave NO incentive to start using solar. Aaaarrrrggggghhhh!
I don't mean to rain on the parade, but I have a few questions about your experience with solar panels as well as a few comments. First, how much did the solar panels cost you on a per watt (or kw) basis. I have seen statistics that indicate solar panels are in the range of $4-8 per watt, and since I have not looked to buy any first hand, I was wondering the kind of cost you experience. Also, what kind of production capacity/ utilization do you get. By that, I mean if you have 6 Kw of solar panels installed, how much daily electricity are your panels able to generate. Again, most literature mention anywhere between 5-8 times the installed capacity (for example 30 -48 kwh of electricity in this case). My final question is how often do you have to change the $1600 worth of batteries, and how long are your solar panels guaranteed by the manufacturer. WIth all this in mind, I really do think solar is one of the least viable alternatives on a large scale basis without a government mandate of a significant carbon tax. Any thoughts on these comments would be great
I have a 2.5kw system. After rebates and tax credits it cost me a little under 13k. On a normal sunny day (I live in L.A.) my system will produce about 12kwh of electricity. If I don't run my A/C I use roughly 6kwh per day. I use energy star appliances, compact flourescent bulbs and am diligent about not being wasteful. My system is grid tied so I don't use batteries.
I think that it is actual case histories like this, of real people using solar panels, that will convince others that A> It does not cost a fortune, and B. It is worthwhile economically, as well as C. Giving you (and your resident schoolchildren) bragging rights for being such a green and caring person. Let's have more comments from folks who have been enjoying the benefits of solar panels or personal wind generators for a few years now. Aloha!
Can you list what rebates and tax credits were? Thanks for your real case info.
So if you think that solar panels are not up to your high standards yet, check it out again. And do not assume that you have to power everything in your house with solar like we do.......maybe you still stay hooked to the grid and on days you don't need a lot, you glide along on your photo volatic power. On other days you take it off the grid.
Anything you can do NOW puts us all ahead from now on.
With electric cars just around the corner, you will be all set when you get one. An electric car ppowered by SUN ENERGY taken right off the panels on your roof is really taking a bite out of pollution. And why shouldnt they put a small solar panel on the roof. Fore years now sailing yachts that cruise great distances have employed solar panels on deck to keep their batteries charged and their lights on. We have a lot of unused roof space on houses, cars, parking garages and business and government buildings in this country that could be used to help solve the energy crisis.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!

IF there is an electric car JUST around the corner, it is plugged into either a coal fired plant OR a nuclear reactor. Neither of which Toots Fruiti supports. The electric car wll become the American Motors "Pacer" car of the current generation. Cute, but not practical. The rich will buy one, run it around the block a time or two for the novelty factor and put it in the garage when the TY cameras have drifted away. Than, they will jump into their helicoptors and go off an do another oil deal.

The middle class will buy a pure gasoline powered (when they finally get off thier financiially deflated butt) car as rhe price if gasoline is soon to drop. (remember, you heard it here FIRST folks)

And the poor...well, as the old saying goes, "they will always be with us".
