What does it take to get more CNG vehicles built for consumers other than a Honda Civic?

I hear a lot about commercial vehicles being converted, etc. but still no real effort has been made by the automotive industry to produce CNG vehicles. Understanding that the infrastructure for CNG at every street corner is a long way off. It is the old chicken and egg story. No gas, no vehicle. Can we hook up a compressor and condensing system to our local natural gas line and provide OUR HOME VEHICLE with some CNG? So why is there just the Honda Civic?

As others have typed, the USA government is requiring excessive safety and polution certification = Honda is likely making little profit from GNG and other wantabes don't see their profit potential as any better. Several CNG vehicle choices exist in some countries, where government is more reasonable. The home refuling pumps cost about $3000 and take 8 hours to refill completely. For most buyers internal combustion costs less per mile, even though the natural gas costs about half as much, per gallon equivent. The electricity for the pump adds almost a dollar to the cost of a gallon equivellent. Neil
Are you saying that it cost over a $1.00 gallon of gasoline equivalent to compress and liquify the Natural Gas?
