A year ago I found the US govt report on electric grid.

not too good of a grid, not more capacity, congested.

again forget the hype of wind, solar- if you can not transmit the energy it will be a wast e of time.

do the easy thing first, do an energy audit, replace outdated appliances that eat energy,
use CFG lights. Just the basics will save each family 30%.

so pickens has shelved his wind farm??? go figure.

but if cap and trade passes energy cost will rise and once it gets high enough on coal, then the switch will be on.

Look at Montana, specifically east of the Rockies. Constant wind in excess of 20 mph. Browning Montana, the Blackfoot Reservation, has been using a small wind system for years. An opportunity for the tribe to gain economic growth and help develop this program.

The recession has a lot of things scaled back, so the Picken's wind farm may also be delayed. Lenders are backing off and/or asking for bigger down payments, so wind turbine builders have shelved expanded production increases, they can't afford without big loans. Cap and trade will be bad for almost everyone, even manufacturing wind turbines. Some are waiting to see if cap and trade passes or not. Neil

Well, we do need a rebuilt energy grid for the USA and when we do it we could do two new things. First we could follow the rail lines and use the power for electric trains since they are the most efficient. Second, we could build superconductivity into the system and save energy. However that is a future plan.

What do we do right now.

And I do take exception to one remark. If you can not transmit the energy, you had better produce it where it will be used. That means solar cells and windmills in neighborhoods and individual houses and apartments.

But the most important thing a company or a project can do is to be realistic. If it will be a while for the grid to be completed, just put things on hold. Build part of the farm and sell energy to Lubbock and Amarillo and the Pantex plant. They may need some energy for their research, Then branch out to Dallas and Fort Worth. That could be done in a few years - it is only 300 miles further from Lubbock.

I tedll you that we are as likely to have an ice age in our future as not and if we want a comprehensive plan for the future we may want to be ready for all eventualities. Thant means more green house gases, not less. Right now people are only getting ready for a hot summer and not even thinking about a winter thata may follow.

I still have my original enthusiasm for expanded use of natural gas powered vehicles. A fairly easy conversion to existing engine technology if the infrastructure is in place for refueling. Since my first idealistic support of wind power, two realities have tempered my optimism:

1. The very problem which has caused Mr. Pickens to abandon his Texas Panhandle windfarm due to lack of a viable distribution grid, and
2. Even in the wastelands of West Texas where the wind is incessant during the daytime, it nearly always calms at night. I await a viable solution for both of these challenges.

Meanwhile, let's at least reduce our dependency on foreign oil by DRILLING HERE AND DRILLING NOW!

If oil can be bought now for dollars we print and in the future will be very scarce and valuable - perhaps we should use all the imported oil we can get now and save ours for later on when we can not buy it.

And you can get solar energy only when the sun shines, right? I did not say these energy sources are perfect - just useful. That is why we need a very good battery to store what we make for when we need it. McCain wanted a prize for a good battery and he was right.

We, john & myna potts own 4,000 acres north east in Hardeman Co. with required transmission lines. Highest part of county
geodetic survey marker says so. It was first placed on property in 1860. What in the world were white folks doing here then.

I guess they were looking for a place to grow cotton and all that infrastructure would follow. Plantations, ...

Anyone who says we can not burn coal in a clean way is lying.

We don't need high-powered transmission lines; the are actually the brainchild of Utility companies who ASSUME that they will be THE suppliers of electricity. - - - and you know what happens if you ASSUME! You make an ASS out of U and ME.

Ho boy PhD. Roger doger, I got an earned PhD of my own and am a retied science librarian with undergraduate minors in physics, engineering and mathematics. Pity we do not agree.

Pepco in MD is hoping to build a 500 kv line , underneath the Chesapeake Bay to the Eastern shore of MD. Expected date of complete 2014. right now residents , envirals and others are trying to block.

if you cannot transmit / move energy forget the wind / solar farms out in the middle of nowhere.
