Tucson Clean Cities Weekly Update, 12/16/09

The all electric Tesla Roadster #750 will be making an appearance at Bookman’s EV Grand Opening this Saturday. The car will be en route from Los Angles to Detroit and will stop in Tucson on its way. Be sure to come out and see this exciting example of modern electric vehicle engineering that can go from 0 to 60 MPH in 3.8 seconds and has a charge range of 244 miles!!
Also at the Bookman’s event… there will be a reading of the “Tucson EV Friendly Vehicle Community” Proclamation that was presented to Clean Cities at last night’s Mayor and Council Meeting.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that Toyota will begin offering its new Prius plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) for lease in 2010, with hopes of having them available on the mass market by 2011. The new plug-in hybrid will have electric power range of about 7 miles and will take 3-4 hours to recharge off of a 110 volt outlet. The new plug-ins’ electric motor will be able to reach 62 MPH on electric-only power (the current Prius hybrids can only reach a top speed of 25 MPH before the gasoline motor kicks in). Exxon Mobil has purchased Texas based natural gas producer XTO Energy for $29 billion (“Exxon Mobil places hefty bet on natural gas”, Los Angeles Times, December 15, 2009). XTO has developed new technology for extracting natural gas from shale that significantly increases the amount of fuel that is able to be produced. This process brings down cost significantly, increasing the odds that natural gas could potentially replace petroleum as America’s fuel of choice. The shift to natural gas from petroleum could not only significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but would also greatly reduce the United States’ dependence on foreign oil. We are finalizing plans for the Nissan Leaf event which will be taking place on Wednesday, December 30. A public showing of the car will be held at Maloney’s on Fourth Avenue from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Representatives from both Nissan and Clean Cities will be on hand to answer questions from the public. Watch your e-mail for more information, as we will be passing along the event invitation and press release to our Coalition Members within the coming week.

Have a wonderful week!!

We had a conference call with Boone today, very enlightening!
We hope for the Nat Gas Act to get through before the end of the year if we keep pushing. So keep calling and writing your legislators to support the Nat Gas Act!
The Grid progress is stalled as its in the bill with the Cap and Trade.
So everything you do is helping! Keep it up. Keep pushing the Nat Gas Act and once its done we'll move on to work on the other parts of the plan!
Thanks,
Dave

Let’s get to 120 by 11/20/09

Army:

What a couple of weeks it’s been and I have lots to report and something very important to ask.

There’s a new Natural Gas Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives which is headed by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA) and Rep. Dan Boren (D-OK). The more than 40 bi-partisan members of the caucus held a major hearing on Capitol Hill. The Natural Gas Caucus talked about how the development of America’s natural gas resources will help set America on a path to energy independence and create millions of new jobs. It was a great event and an important message to get out there.

But here’s the really important part.

We’ve got just under 100 cosponsors of the NAT GAS Act (H.R. 1835) in the House—and that’s great—but I think we can educate more Members of Congress, build on that support and do a lot more.

Click here to email your Member of Congress and ask them to become a cosponsor of the NAT GAS Act.

I think we can get at least another 20+ cosponsors in the coming weeks so I’m calling on every member of the Army to reach out to their Member of Congress right now so that we can get to at least 120 sponsors by November 20th. I’m calling it 120 by 11-20.

I’m going to be working the phones and I need you to as well. Army, we can get this done and show Congress that it’s time to end our dependence on foreign oil.

Click here to email your Member of Congress and ask them to become a cosponsor of the NAT GAS Act.

Stay tuned because we’re going to post regular updates about our progress and highlight those members who are working to get us off foreign oil.

Let’s keep the pressure on!

– Boone

P.S. We recently ran an ad in the news publications which cover Capitol Hill. Click here to view the short video we did about this really unique ad. It’s getting people’s attention.
