Here's a report on Rep. Rooney's town meeting Tuesday:

Scene outside Stuart health care forum turns to shouts, spitting
by cfitzpatrick | August 18th, 2009

STUART — What began as a semi-friendly discussion outside a health care forum tonight quickly turned ugly with nearly a dozen people shouting at each other and one spitting on another.

Everett Wilkinson, chairman of the anti-tax South Florida Tea Party, found himself the unsuspecting victim of a spittle attack just minutes after joining the argument.

The altercation had begun with just two people having a semi-friendly discussion outside tonight’s health care forum at Indian River State College’s Chastain campus on Salerno Road. U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Tequesta, is holding the forum inside The Wolf High-Technology Center.

That's an option but they are only on vacation for a limited amount of time and there is a protocol to obtain a request for a meeting to be scheduled-which a person would have had to email to the Rep at least 4-6 weeks ago from what I understand. IMO - it would be great to ask them to address this in a town hall setting, which can also be done in a respectful, intelligent manner by first letting them know why you are there and state that you are NOT there to shout accusations at them and dissuade them from answering health care questions.(and also because then we get a photo-op AND get them to state their position on The Plan on the local News)

What I was trying to convey is that is a d*** shame that this has happened, especially now and particularly since A House Divided Cannot Stand.

And unfortunately, I am only aware of 1 member who contacted our Rep(20) to request a meeting for The Plan during her vacation..I truly wish that more people had.

They don't need to have that activity happen is they take time to schedule a meeting with the people like me who take the time to write thoughtful letters and make requests in writing. They didn't before they created this mess and they are not now. Now frustrated constituents are getting noticed because the media likes to focus on bad behavior.

the protesters' scare tactics are making Representatives rethink the idea of having meetings of any kind. While they are protected by the 2nd Amendment, they Do Not realize that this is hurting us - The People - who elected them to protect our best interests - in ALL AREAS (ie; The Pickens Plan), not just health care. It has caused many Reps to cancel their town halls and they are just staying hidden while on Vaca...

Who wants to meet your Congressperson and to try and educate yourself about our Government and have to deal with crazy Uninformed, Uneducated screaming, crying, yelling and apparently a wealth of concealed weapons ?

Congressman Rooney's votes on legislation can be found at
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/r000583/. He has "voted with a majority of his Republican colleagues 92.9% of the time during the current Congress."

This is his blog: http://www.tcpalm.com/blogs/us-rep-tom-rooney-blog/ where he discusses his recent trip to Israel.

This is an automatic news update on him: http://www.inboxrobot.com/news/tom-rooney

Leslie and Nancy,
I just phoned Rep. Rooney's Stuart office and asked about the meeting. Katy, who answered, said there isn't a meeting on the west coast. I asked if there were any, and she said just one -- I asked when and where -- she said tomorrow, 6 pm, at 2400 Salerno RD, Stuart, (which Google indicates is Gladys Wolf High - Technology Center -- that's by the library, I think). I didn't ask if tickets were required. Jessica, who previously told me there was a west coast meeting, no longer works there, Katy said.

I just found a TCPalm / Stuart News article that lists tomorrow's meeting as the only one -- http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2009/aug/12/TCROONEY/.

FYI, Rooney's website District offices are listed at http://rooney.house.gov/index.cfm?sectionid=4&sectiontree=4.

Rep. Rooney's visit to Israel during the recess is described in another TCPalm article: [Rooney was] "part of a delegation led by House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., that spent time last week with both Israeli and Palestinian leaders . . ." http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2009/aug/13/treasure-coast-congressmen-support-israel-after-vi/.

Sorry for getting your hopes up, Nancy. Do you get the feeling that he's not anxious to talk to constituents?

My Letter to the Editor will be in the TCPLAM this weekend of next week, please continue to write on behalf of the Pickens Plan.

District FL-16 Member Patrick McNamara sent me the following suggestions:
Leslie, re your request for ideas on getting people motivated:

1. A face to face meeting, where people can get to know each other, brainstorm ideas, commit to actions, etc., is essential to any real sustained action. Do you have a place to meet on a somewhat regular basis? District 16 covers from FL east coast to west coast, so maybe there is a need for sub-district locations, east, central, west, to make meeting convenient.

2. There need to be specific projects with specific objectives, to gain interest. Some ideas are to set objectives of specific contacts with Members of Congress in the District, by phone, by letter, by visit to local District office, etc. Even, a trip to Washington to meet with the Congressmen. (BTW, I stopped at Rep. Rooney's Stuart office last week, dropped by a letter I had written about health care. I asked if he was having any town meetings during the August recess. The receptionist said only one on west coast of FL was scheduled, and that right then he was on a trip to Israel! I asked to be kept informed of any activities.)

3. Another idea would be to go to local media outlets, and ask to speak with their news directors, etc. Maybe even get an interview on the air.

4. Similarly, letters to the editors of local newspapers can be written, although there is no guarantee will be printed. But most local newspapers have websites where comments are almost certainly posted, and can produce many responses, when tied to an news story.

5. Natural gas and energy in general are key investment opportunities -- I spend a lot of my time watching the markets and making buy/sell decisions to supplement my income. Others might too, and there could be a forum to share our knowledge and outlook about natural gas prices, etc.

6. Does the Pickens Plan have ideas for projects, etc. for local districts to take on? Is this all about just having people write their Congressmen? What controls are there on what can be done in the name of the Pickens Plan? There have to be operational guidelines and rules, to protect the "brand." etc.

I will follow up and get an answer to question # 6.

What about it? Can we get together and make this happen? Please post your suggestions on this Group page so that we may all benefit.

Charlotte County, FL Commissioners voted 7/28/09 to apply for $20 million from federal Clean Renewable Energy bonds for Charlotte County businesses and residents to go solar. If the bond money isn't used within 3 yrs., it is returned without penalty to the federal govt. Participation in the program is voluntary, and the cost may be reduced by substantial federal tax credits and a state rebate. Of course, there would also be savings in electricity bills.
