IRSC INTRODUCES RENEWABLE ENERGY TRAINING
FOR GREEN BUILDING INDUSTRY
Helping Treasure Coast residents launch new green collar careers, Indian River State College is providing new training opportunities in the rapidly growing renewableenergy industry. Starting March 13, IRSC is introducing a series of courses that will enable area residents to prepare for a new career or open a business in installation of solar energy systems. The three courses will prepare students for the Florida Solar Contractors License Exam for installation of solar thermal and solar photovoltaic electrical systems.
Systems installed by a licensed solar contractor qualify the homeowner for a state rebate and Federal Tax credit, which can amount to several thousand dollars, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Because of the rebate and tax credits, individuals who are licensed to install the solar systems will have a competitive advantage in
the emerging green industry. The courses are among the first offerings of the IRSC Energy institute which will also introduce a weatherization course in green strategies for the home.
“With the United States projected to become the largest market for solar power in the world by 2011 and state and national incentives to convert to renewable energy sources, jobs and business opportunities in this field are excellent,” said Dr. Chrys Panayiotou, IRSC Electronics Engineering Professor, who will be teaching the electronics aspects of the courses. “IRSC is moving forward quickly to provide workforce training in emerging fields and help people launch new careers in the green economy.”
The course in Solar Thermal Systems will focus on the installation and repair of solar power for water heating systems, including pool heating. It will meet on Fridays and
Saturdays, during the weekends of March 13, 20 and 27 at the Kight Center for Emerging Technologies at the Main Campus in Fort Pierce. A second section of the Solar Thermal course will be offered on Monday through Saturday, March 30 through April 4.
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems will examine how these systems generate electricity from solar cells. Students will learn how to determine the size of a PV system needed for Page 2 - IRSC INTRODUCES RENEWABLE ENERGY TRAINING FOR GREEN BUILDING
INDUSTRY various applications and how to install and connect the PV system to the electrical grid. This
intensive hands-on course will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturdays from May 5 to 16 at the Main Campus. A second course in Solar PV Systems will be offered during the week of June 15, Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The third course in the series will cover Florida Construction Law to prepare students for the Florida Solar Contractor’s Licensing Examination.
Weatherization: Green Strategies for the Home will help homeowners protect their property from the elements and save money by reducing energy consumption. The $36 course will meet on Monday and Wednesday mornings on March 16 and 18 at the Blackburn Educational Building at the R. Duke Nelson Human Resources and Development Centre in Fort Pierce. The course will also be offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings,
March 23 and 25, at the IRSC carpentry lab at the Main Campus.

This stimulus package is an obomination of irresponsible spending. It is nothing short of a disaster. I'm more worried about my country today they I am in getting this awful package passed. They say when you are in a hole you need to stop digging. I'm all for using natural gas as an alternative fuel but this bill stinks!

Hi district members, have you signed up for the Virtual March on Washington yet? It's April 1-3. We want to continue to have an impact on how the Administration formulates American energy policy, and the Army will focus its energy during those three days on e-mails, calls and faxes to every Member of Congress.

Click here for more information about the Virtual March! And let's all make the commitment to recruit 10 other people to take part, too.

Hi all, let's keep the pressure on the Senate! While the stimulus package is not perfect, it does have good in it and will jumpstart efforts to get wind and solar projects going.

More than 30,000 members of the New Energy Army have contacted their elected officials in the last 48 hours. If you haven't done so, please take a few minutes now to contact your Senators. Use phone and/or e-mail to reach out to them on this very important issue.

Senator Martinez 202-224-3041 - Senator Nelson 202-224-5274

As Boone says, "let's give the Senators another push... to get this accomplished.... The Army and the grassroots are going to do it."

Your help needed today!

Boone and the Pickens Plan need your help! As you saw from Boone's email last Friday, the stimulus package will be voted on tomorrow in the House, and it includes wind energy elements that are in line with the Pickens Plan.

We need you to make a phone calls today to your Congressman and Senators. To find the phone number of your Member of Congress, go to the House of Representatives website and the U.S. Senate website and enter the info when prompted. It will give you complete contact info, including the phone number.

Here are some talking points to use when you call your Congressman or Senator's office:

1. Urge them to tell House Leadership that their constituents support the wind energy elements included in the Stimulus Bill which will build upon 2008's successes in the wind energy sector:
-- Extension of the Production Tax Credit
-- Implementation of a renewable infrastructure loan program

2. We hope they're willing to do more on the natural gas side and provide the incentives that will greatly expand the use of domestic natural gas as a vehicle fuel in America. Expanded use of NGVs (natural gas vehicles) will help wean us off of foreign oil and create new American jobs. These incentives include:
-- Increasing the vehicle tax credit to make natural gas trucks more accessible for heavy and medium duty truck operators
-- Extending the fuel tax credit

3. The Pickens Plan works best as a whole plan - wind and natural gas - and we hope Members of Congress will support that. The Stimulus Bill is a strong start but there's more we can - and should – do.

Once you make your call, leave a comment here to let us know how it went. Or email me directly – renee.klink@pickensplan.com. (And be sure to give me your name and email address so we can make sure you get the 10 MyEnergy points we are awarding for each phone call.)

Good luck, and let's get it done!

I am convinced that our country is in the shape it's in ,Energy Wise, so that certain privileged few would PROFIT from our national energy policies. How else do you explain why we went from 25% dependence in the '70's ,,,to over 70% importation today?? The fat cats days are OVER. CNG, ELECTRIC, HYDRO, Whatever it takes to STOP THE BLEEDING of OUR GOD-blessed country. The IDIOTS dont realize...NO GOD, NO COUNTRY!!!
Joseph Murratti Comment by Joseph Murratti on January 24, 2009 at 5:44pm
I use to drive past all those windmills along I-580 near the Dublin grade in N.Calif. back in the '80's and wondered "Why dont we do this EVERYWHERE there is wind energy?" The tree-huggers & the liberal media brain-washed eveyone into believing NUCLEAR Energy would destroy us...LOOK AT THE FRENCH/FRANCE today...laughing at us DUMB AMERICANS!!!

This movment is long overdue. The US needs self suficiency today !
Thank God for T. Boone Pickens

Clay, thanks for your support. If you haven't visited the MyEnergy center yet, please do. We have a lot of resources there that Pickens Plan members can use to contact elected officials to ask for their support, as well as others in your community to spread the word and get involved.
