Governor Charlie Crist’s Video Message
Regarding Renewable Energy
July 31, 2009

Florida is quickly becoming the focal point for renewable energy development in the nation. We are supporting research and development of clean, renewable energy such as biofuels, solar, wind, and ocean energy.

The Centers of Excellence at our state universities are advancing this research and development. I am proud of the work being done with solar energy at University of Central Florida, ethanol at University of Florida and ocean energy at Florida Atlantic.

Floridians are exploring the production of ethanol using sugar and citrus waste. This development is important because these sources do not compete with food production and minimize the need for water and fertilizer.

Careful study of these biofuels is part of the solution for meeting Florida's future energy needs. And this progress is good for Florida’s economy because we know there is gold in green.

Florida’s economy is built on innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit. The development of green technology and renewable energies has spurred that spirit.

Florida continues to stand out as a national leader in terms of our greatest resource – our people. We have a talented workforce with extraordinary expertise.

I am committed to injecting capital into Florida’s clean energy economy and creating “green collar” jobs. Florida’s green tech business hub is good for Florida’s economy – and it also protects Florida’s natural environment for generations to come.

May God continue to bless are beautiful state.

From the desk of T. Boone Pickens

It’s that time of year again and your Members of Congress will be home soon for the August recess. They’ll be attending summer BBQs, holding townhall meetings, and looking for opportunities to hear from YOU! There’s a lot going on and now is the time to keep the dangers of our dependence on foreign oil front and center.

CLICK HERE TO EMAIL YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ABOUT THE NAT GAS ACT TODAY

http://www.capwiz.com/pickensplan/issues/alert/?alertid=13702871&type=CO

We’re off to a good start in both the Senate and House of Representatives with the introduction of the NAT GAS Act of 2009 (H.R. 1835 and S. 1408)...but we have more work to do. I was in Washington, D.C. just yesterday meeting with several U.S. Senators from both sides of the political aisle talking to them about the NAT GAS Act and why every Member of Congress should support this important piece of legislation. Like I say, a fool with a plan can beat a genius with no plan. But we’ve got a plan and it’s time to put it in place. I was doing my part yesterday and I need your help over the August recess.

During the Congressional break ask your Member of Congress and your two U.S. Senators to become co-sponsors of the NAT GAS Act and help get us off foreign oil. If they’ve already signed on then thank them because they’re helping America get off foreign oil. If they haven’t, try to find out why. Either way, let your District Leader know what you’re hearing because we’re a team in this effort.

As you know, I’m for every energy source that’s American. But there’s only one domestic resource that can get us off foreign oil, and that’s natural gas. It’s cleaner, it’s cheaper, it’s abundant, it’s American and lastly, it’s the only domestic alternative fuel available today that can move an 18-wheeler and other heavy-duty trucks.

What’s also amazing about natural gas is that our country's reserves are not just in traditional energy states such as Oklahoma, Texas, and Alaska, but rather they’re spread out from coast to coast. You'd be surprised to learn what sort of production comes out of Kansas, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Alabama. Recent research shows that these deposits have more than 100 years worth of natural gas – right here in America. Also, the United States has more natural gas than Saudi Arabia has oil.

Yes, you read that right. There is MORE natural gas in the United States than Saudi Arabia has oil.

Army – I’m counting on you to help us push the NAT GAS Act over the finish line.

Until we’ve reached energy independence,

--Boone

Hi Everyone - Please post your experiences & communications with your Congressmen/women here. For help with your calls, feel free to review/print out the documents and information that is posted here on the website for that purpose.

Follow this url to Tips for Meetings with Members of Congress which is located in the Resource Center.

http://media.pickensplan.com/pdf/congressional_meeting_tips.pdf

Review Steps 3 and 4 even though you are making a telephone call...these ideas will help you to be mentally organized and remain articulate and to the point. Write down what you want say if it will help you to be focused but relay your message with the passion you feel for The Plan and not like you are reading from a script.

Ask your Congressman if you can fax them a copy of The TBP Energy Independence Pledge so they may sign it. (also located under Resources)

Floridians,

Since the middle of last year I’ve been trying to convince our people of the advantages of the better usage of natural gas, which has proved to be a great help in the efforts of the Brazilians to become energy self-sufficient, which they are now.

For those who don’t know yet, Brazil is now the least indebted economy among the 37 largest economies of the world, thanks to the efforts they started in the 70’s with their Ethanol program and their massive usage of natural gas in any possible way, particularly in the transport of people and merchandise.

You can read more about it in my discussion Brazil is 100% oil independent. Why aren't we? And see some pictures about it in my pictures.

Even though the price of oil has lowered considerably in the last few months (thanks only to our financial crisis), I like to call your attention to a small business located in South Florida for a number of years that has already been silently providing alternative technology for the use of natural gas in diesel oil engines.

The company is owned by a friend of mine (he does not know I’m writing this). His name is Raul Llanos and the company is called Innotech Group and they have developed a conversion kit for Diesel Engines to use Natural Gas through a process he calls Fumigation.

According to his website - http://www.innotechgroup.com/technical.htm - Fumigation is the process of having the natural gas blended with the combustion air before entering the engine, which permits the usage of a simultaneous blend of 80% natural gas and 20% diesel oil, thus saving considerably both oil and money.

He has been very successful in retrofitting large engines for trucks, buses, locomotives and electricity generators which are saving many thousands of dollars for their owners and valuable resources not only in the US but also in several other countries, including Venezuela, Colombia and Pakistan.

He has retrofitted locomotive engines even in California, which has the toughest environmental laws in the US.

I encourage you to patronize his business because:
- It uses resources already abundantly available almost everywhere in the US,
- It saves a considerable amount of oil and money,
- It provides employment to our people in our state,
- It is a new technology developed in the Florida State.

I hope you’ll take the time to visit his website http://www.innotechgroup.com to learn more about this great little business.

Look at my pictures for some info about his company.

Thanks,

Getulio Bastos

District members, we’re at the third and final day of the Virtual March, and today we are focusing on getting action on a bill to establish a 21st century transmission system and a National Renewable Electricity Standard (RES). As Boone points out, twenty-eight states now have an RES – which directs electric utilities to produce a set percentage of their power using alternative sources by a date certain.

Let’s make a great final push. Please use this link to contact Congress and the President again today and send a message to them about renewable energy! Thanks to all who have participated in the Virtual March this week!
