Solar Exalted at Stimulus Package Signing in Denver

The largest stimulus package in US history was signed today, and it’s putting a smile on the face of the solar industry. President Obama returned to Denver, where he accepted the Democratic nomination, to sign this landmark legislation–this time in front of solar panels, not neoclassical pillars.
“I don’t want to pretend that today marks the end of our economic problems,” Obama said before signing the bill. “We are laying the groundwork for a green energy economy that can create countless green jobs. We will transform the way we use energy.”

The CEO of Namaste Solar, Blake Jones, introduced the president. His Denver-based solar company was looking at layoffs, but now plans on increasing its workforce over the next two years given the stimulus to green jobs and renewable energy.

Other green provisions in the stimulus package include:

* A large sum for energy efficiency, including $5 billion for low-income weatherization programs; over $6 billion in grants for state and local governments; and several billion to modernize federal buildings, with a particular emphasis on energy efficiency.

* $11 billion for “smart grid” investments.

* $3.4 billion for carbon capture and sequestration demonstration projects (otherwise known as “clean coal”).

* $2 billion for research into batteries for electric cars.

* $500 million to help workers train for “green jobs.”

* A three-year extension of the “production tax credit” for wind energy (as well as a tax credit extension for biomass, geothermal, landfill gas and some hydropower projects).

* The option, available to many developers, of turning their tax credits into direct cash, with the government underwriting 30 percent of a project’s cost.”

The text of the stimulus package bill and a detailed summary are posted on the Appropriations Committee website. To increase transparency and accountability, the White House has also created a website to show how the stimulus money is spent. RECOVERY.GOV

Foot note by Mark Hedtke - FL-24 District Leader

While there are many plans to expand solar, popping up all over the country, right here in our own back yard there are programs available to home owners through companies like Energy Custom Homes in Orlando, Florida. They are finding new finacing methods to help people to STOP BEING ENERGY PRISONERS of the utilities and afford to put their own energy systems on their roof. They are a LOCAL Florida solar company who is promoting group purchasing programs to negotiate cheaper prices on equipment on behalf of localities for more affordable solar. The sole purpose of such companies is for residential owners to GET OFF THE GRID.

Hello Mark,

Since becoming a member of the Pickens army, I have actually gone to work in sales in the Solar Industry. I have learned that there are great incentives from the State and Fed as well as some of our utility companies. I have had solar hot water installed in my home and with the incentives and the finance program from GE my company uses it is really a no brainer!! Energy Custom Homes looks like it is a limited program offered within a specific community. Solar companies such as the one I am associated with have great programs which allow an installation which swaps your payment to the utility company for a payment on a solar system until the system is paid off in many cases. After the system is paid for the money goes into your pocket!!! What first step could be easier than that?
