Once again the issues surrounding energy and the need to develop our own resources have been put on the back burner. The Saudis are talking about cutting back the supply in January and this could have an immediate effect on the price of oil very soon. Obama needs to have plans for developing our own resources for energy which will protect our security and could also provide millions of jobs.
If we don't allow for off shore drilling all the roads and bridges Obama promises to build will not be needed if we can't afford to fill our gas tanks

Well true in some respects- Off shore drilling will just mean more pollution- green house gas, etc. We need better ideas than just off shore drilling. There was a great show on PBS about California's energy plan- using alternatives; wind, sun, even the dreaded nuclear for power-
We have to do something about the waste of our energy by just about everyone.
But, you are right, we have to do something- and quickly
Bush did nothing to help our energy independence. Obama has helped a little in stimulus funds for renewable energy, but the focus for congress and the president has been health care and now financial regulation. Given the approval of off shore drilling, massive funding for nuclear power which traditionally has been slow to come on line and very expensive, and continued approval of mountain top renewal for coal mining it looks like Obama's record, while better than that of Bush (small achievement), has been mixed. For national security, the future of our planet, and our economy it is way past time to focus on energy!
The e-mail from Pickens Plan made it easy to e-mail or mail my congressman. I started with my words so all mail does not look identical. Here is what I put:

Dear [recipient name was inserted here],

Every president since Nixon has warned against our growing dependency on
oil even as the situation got worse year after year. We are now in the
unfortunate position of financing out enemies, the ones who kill our
servicemen, by buying mideast oil We need to stop! It may be difficult for
you, it is much worse for our men and women in uniform.

While the price per barrel of oil may have fallen from its summer 2008
highs, it's beginning to rise again. What hasn't changed is the
percentage of oil we import every day: over the past 12 months we have
continued to import nearly two-thirds of the oil we use, spending one
billion dollars every day on imported oil.

We need a comprehensive energy plan to get us off of foreign oil and
leverage American energy resources. And we need Congress to take action
now.

Most of the oil we import is used as a transportation fuel. There are
eight million heavy trucks on America's highways and these trucks use
approximately one-third of all oil used for transportation. Moving a
significant percentage of America's heavy truck fleet from imported diesel
to domestic natural gas is the most effective way to reduce our dependence
on OPEC oil starting today.

Due to recent advances in technology, we now have more than two times the
domestic natural gas that Saudi Arabia has in oil reserves.

Natural gas is cheaper than diesel fuel. Natural gas is cleaner than
diesel. It's abundant. And it's ours.

The time to act is now and the NAT GAS Act is the best tool we've had in
decades to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

The NAT GAS Act is a bi-partisan bill in both the U.S. House of
Representatives and the Senate. In the House, Congressmen Boren (D-OK),
Larson (D-CT) and Sullivan (R-OK) introduced H.R. 1835 and it already has
more than 140 bi-partisan cosponsors. In the Senate, Senators Menendez
(D-NJ) and Hatch (R-UT) were joined by Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-NV)
to introduce S. 1408.

The NAT GAS Act provides industry with the incentives to replace older
diesel trucks with newer natural gas vehicles -- it's a great step in the
right direction. It will provide the momentum for engine manufacturers,
natural gas producers and natural gas distributors to ramp up and make a
real difference in our dependence on foreign oil.

I hope you will sign up as a cosponsor to support this important
legislation and continue to push Congress to enact a comprehensive energy
plan this year with the NAT GAS Act at the center. I will be watching
your press and floor remarks for statements of support.

Sincerely,

Ed and Harriet Griffith
