"Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 1835, the New Alternative Transportation to Give American Solutions (NAT GAS) Act of 2009. I appreciate your thoughts on this issue.
As you may know, H.R. 1835 would allow an excise tax credit through 2027 for alternative fuels and fuel mixtures involving compressed or liquefied natural gas, and allow an income tax credit through 2027 for alternative fuel motor vehicles powered by compressed or liquefied natural gas. The NAT GAS Act would also change the tax credit percentage for alternative fuel vehicles fueled by natural gas or liquefied natural gas. The legislation would allow a new tax credit for the production of vehicles fueled by natural gas or liquefied natural gas as well. Additionally, the measure would require half of all vehicles purchased or placed in service by the U.S. government to be capable of operating on compressed or liquefied natural gas by the end of the year 2014.
While I firmly believe our nation's energy portfolio needs to change to include increasingly more domestically-produced fuels, I also believe in diversification of our sources. For instance, renewable sources of energy for fuels such as ethanol and even hydrogen need to be further examined in order to determine their long-term viability for the powering of vehicles on our nation's roadways. Natural gas is likely a component of this developing and changing portfolio. H.R. 1835 has been referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and the Committee on Science and Technology. Although I am not a member of these committees, I will certainly keep your views in mind if this measure comes before the House for a vote.
Again, I thank you for sharing your views with me. I hope you will continue to give me the benefit of your opinion in the future. Member of Congress"
He has been ambiguous before, often sounding like our two senators who are in love with coal and would prefer giving money out of our country. Still, he did vote for the recent ACES bill and it looks like our senators support aspects of the Pickens Plan so there is hope. Still, I am tired of the completely unproved charge that environmentalism and clean energy costs jobs so we have to achieve a "balance." Just the opposite is true. We are lagging in jobs and in our economy is falling behind other countries because of our lack of clean energy here at home.
