PickensPlan

Folks, the time is here. This may be one of the most important functions that we as the New Energy Army will carry out: Operation Pickens Plan. I heard a congressman today say that we can make a difference, if we choose to speak out and let our elected officials know how we feel.

This is not a partisan issue, but energy independence is a national security issue, and the only plan that has any merit is the one proposed by Mr. Pickens. Jeff Boeyink (our fearless regional leader!) has sent out information about the stimulus package, and encouraged people to understand the impact of the various aspects of the proposed legislation. Please ignore all the rhetoric from both sides, and focus on the portions that deal with energy issues, namely wind power.

As Jeff has stated, some type of stimulus package will be passed, but the exact makeup of the bill can still be modified before becoming law. If we can't have an impact prior to the voting on the bill, we can still make a difference before it would be signed by the President.

Attached is some information about the portion of the bill that relates to energy. As you can see, it's not as beneficial as many of feel it should be. There are other provisions in the proposed legislation that many feel are not as important to our energy needs, or possibly fall short of actually stimulating the economy, which is after all, the purpose.

I would also encourage all of you to Google the stimulus package, and learn more for yourself what this bill has in store for us. Then, call and email your congressmen and congresswomen, and get your friends to do the same. We need to have our voices heard. Don't allow our elected officials to railroad legislation that has no real energy provisions, or ignores the real facts about energy independence. The talk about fuel efficiency is fine, but it all falls very short. It's up to each and every one of us. They can't ignore 1.4 million New Energy Army members.

Please take action now. It's not too late.

Jim,

I understand your call to action but I wonder if we as a group should be more specific about how we want the Illinois Senators to respond to this call. Just asking or insisting that the Senators support energy independence may not change anything. If we have a specific plan for northern Illinois (or Illinois for that matter) that would have impact I think this call to action would also have more impact.

What is the energy independence plan for Illinois? Do we even have one? Which solution would have the biggest return, would it be the natural gas refilling stations, a wind powered light rail systems that could remove cars from the streets and highways? Illinois already has six operating nuclear power plants in Illinois: Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle, and Quad Cities how many more do we want? As far as coal goes our ex governor Governor Rod Blagojevich announced plans in April of 2003 for a $1 billion high tech clean coal fired power plant to be built in Will County on the grounds of the former Joliet Arsenal. Until this technology is perfected does it make sense to as to invest and build more of the same? What will make a difference here in Illinois?

My fear is that we will see a response to the call that does not match the groups expectations (e.i. three wind generator powering a water sprinkler system for Bio Fuel corn field and the Senators will claim victory) instead of a real focused solution of any kind that provides some tangible benefits to the cause and the public. It wouldn't be the first time the government has squandered our hard earned dollars on some useless public works project.
