Good Afternoon!

We are smack dab right in the middle of August Recess. Members of Congress (MOC) are back in their districts, holding events and Town Hall meetings. This is our time to shine army! While the majority of the current Town Hall meetings are focusing on Health Care, other issues are covered as well. I would encourage you to attend your MOC Town Hall and ask them a few quick questions:

1. What is your plan to end our dependence on foreign oil?
2. If you don’t have a plan, do you support the Pickens Plan?
3. If so, would you sign the Pickens Pledge?
4. Are you a Co-Sponsor of HR 1835, “The Natural Gas Act of 2009?” It’s a vital piece of legislation that, for the first time, gives the right incentives for natural gas to become a viable transportation fuel alternative to foreign oil. It currently has 77 bipartisan Co-Sponsors in the House – split almost evenly between Republicans and Democrats.

To find out where your MOC is having their next Town Hall meeting, visit their website and email/call their office for more information. You can do that here: http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW_by_State.shtml or by calling the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

Also, don’t forget about your Senators! S 1408 is the sister bill of HR 1835 and we need to make sure all 100 members of the United States Senate have signed up as Co-Sponsors! You can check out where your Senators are having Town Halls in your area by emailing/calling their offices for dates and locations. You can do that here: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm or by calling the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

Together, we can end our dependence on foreign oil. But it is going to take all of us working together. The effort we put in today will give us the secure energy future we want for tomorrow!

Letters to the editor are some of the most effective ways of communication today! Op-Eds and local LTE are terrific marketing tools that allow you to convey your thoughts and ideas to your friends, family and neighbors. They are fun, make an impact and, best of all, FREE!

Help Boone spread his message of ending our dependence on foreign oil.

Do you want to have a letter to the editor you write published in your local newspaper? If so, message me on Push or email me at Geoffrey@pickensplan.com and I can help you come up with a LTE of your own.

It's the little effort we make today that makes the big difference tomorrow!

Below is a nice op ed article written by Jim baily from KCMO.:

The Pickens Plan is one year old. T. Boone Pickens announced his plan to reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil on July 8, 2008. At that time, oil was selling for over $140 per barrel and we were importing about two-thirds of the oil we use.

Since then the price of oil has fallen, the economy has stalled, and still we are importing two-thirds of the oil we use.

Think about the number of jobs that could be created by keeping large amounts of that money recycling through the U.S. economy rather than the economies in the Middle East and South America.

Seventy percent of our oil imports are used as transportation fuel. More than half of that is used by the 6.4 million 18-wheelers that move goods across and around America. We need to make it a national priority to embrace the Pickens Plan and replace heavy-duty trucks running on imported diesel with trucks running on domestic natural gas.

Natural gas burns much cleaner than either diesel or gasoline, so far fewer greenhouse gases are pushed into the atmosphere. And, unlike diesel, natural gas emits almost no particulates.

The Pickens Plan is crucial for America.

Below is a letter I got from Jerry Moran. I was encouraged by his reply:

Dear Dr. Currie:
I continue to hear from Kansans that one of the biggest issues facing families is future energy availability and affordability, despite the recent drop in oil and gas prices. As the U.S. economy continues to struggle, I believe one of the most important things Congress can do is facilitate the production of affordable energy.

No single form of energy can provide the answer that will allow production of sufficient amounts of domestic energy. To solve our nation's energy problem we must develop traditional sources of oil, natural gas, and coal; encourage development of alternative sources of energy; and promote conservation.

A significant component of a comprehensive energy policy is development of our natural gas resources. Congress took the initial step to open new areas for energy production off our coasts by allowing the congressional ban on oil and natural gas exploration on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) to expire. This policy must be preserved and Congress must encourage the President to pursue a sensible leasing strategy to develop the OCS. We must continue, in an environmentally responsible manner, to permit exploration on other federal lands like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge located in Alaska.

I appreciate knowing your support for H.R. 1835, the New Alternative Transportation to Give Americans Solutions Act of 2009. This legislation was introduced on April 1, 2009 and referred to the House Ways and Means Committee. As our nation continues to address the future of energy, it is necessary that Congress address energy policy in a comprehensive manner. I have consistently voted for initiatives to expand our ability to use domestic sources of energy, whether from fossil fuels or renewable resources, and will remember your support for H.R. 1835 when it comes to a vote in the House of Representatives.

Please continue to let me know your thoughts in the future. In order to stay more informed about the activities of Congress, I welcome you to sign up for my weekly email update, "This Week in Congress" at www.jerrymoran.house.gov.

Very truly yours,

Jerry Moran

Demand for oil has tanked but the proportion we get as inports is still NOT GOOD. Cheaper oil is not the solution we need OUR own energy in these troubled times.!!1

WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Congressman Dan Boren released the following statement today in regard to the announcement by the Potential Gas Committee (PGC) and the Colorado School of Mines on the abundance of domestic natural gas resources. Boren was joined earlier this spring by Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (CT-01), Congressman John Sullivan (OK-1), and several others in announcing the introduction of H.R. 1835 the New Alternative Transportation to Give Americans Solutions Act, or NAT GAS Act. The legislation, which would significantly expand the use of natural gas as an alternative to conventional transportation fuel, could quickly reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign energy while simultaneously reducing transportation fuel costs, greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles, and urban pollution where dense vehicular fleets are prevalent. Since its introduction the NAT GAS Act has garnered the support of a bipartisan group of 66 co-sponsors in U.S. House of Representatives.

Congressman Boren: “Industry leaders, including Aubrey McClendon, T. Boone Pickens, and many others, have been highlighting for some time now the abundance of domestic gas reserves that we should be developing as a bridge fuel for powering our nation’s energy future. Natural gas is a cleaner, cheaper alternative to traditional transportation fuel and we must harness it as soon as possible to rid ourselves of an overwhelming and harmful reliance of foreign energy sources. The report released today is yet another example of the growing case for increased use of natural gas and for legislation like my NAT GAS Act, H.R. 1835. Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson, Congressman John Sullivan, and I believe the NAT GAS Act can be a defining moment in the history of our nation’s energy policy – and this report helps illustrate that point.”

Fantastic news! Apparently not every politician in Washington, DC is asleep at the wheel. Dan Boren (D-OK) introduced H.R. 1835, The New Alternative Transportation to Give Americans Solutions Act (or “NAT GAS” Act), to the 111th Congress on April 1, 2009. This bill contains robust support for natural gas transportation initiatives. Key components are:

Title I: Promote the purchase and use of NGVs with an Emphasis on Heavy Duty Vehicles and Fleet Vehicles
Title II: Promote Production of NGVs by Original Equipment Manufacturers
Title III. To Incentivize the Installation of Natural Gas Fuel Pumps and Service Stations and Depots and Domestic LNG Production Facilities for Small Energy Producers
Title IV: Natural Gas Vehicles (Not later than 2014, at least 50% of all new vehicles purchased by the US Government shall be capable of operating on natural gas.)
The bill contains tax credits for manufacturers and buyers of NGVs as well as for businesses that build natural gas refueling infrastructure.

The full text of the bill can be viewed here.

Introduction of a bill is the first step in the legislative process. Bills and resolutions first go to committees that deliberate, investigate, and revise them before they go on to general debate. The majority of bills never make it out of committee. This bill was referred to three committees:

House Ways and Means
House Science and Technology Committee
House Oversight and Governmental Reform
The members of each of these committees can be found in the links above.

This type of legislation promoting natural gas transportation is exactly what the United States needs right now. If you believe as I do the biggest threat to the American economy and American democracy is peak oil combined with America’s foreign oil addiction, please contact the members of these committees and voice your support for this bill! At a minimum, please contact those members from your home state.

Passage of this bill would have numerous benefits for all Americans. This bill would:

Reduce foreign oil imports and keep our energy dollars at home
Revitalize America’s natural gas and energy industries
Revitalize America’s automobile industry
Create millions of new jobs
Increase energy royalty payments to tens of thousands of American farmers and landowners.
Drastically reduce CO2 and gasoline particulate emissions.
Reinvigorate moribund American equity markets.
Create an American energy foundation for a future of extended prosperity, capitalism, self determination, democracy and freedom.
I want to list the cosponsors of this bill:
Rep. Michael Burgess [R-TX]
Rep. Michael Thompson [D-CA]
Rep. Jeff Miller [R-FL]
Rep. John Larson [D-CT]
Rep. Sanford Bishop [D-GA]
Rep. Harry Teague [D-NM]
Rep. Michael Conaway [R-TX]
Rep. Steve Kagen [D-WI]
Rep. Neil Abercrombie [D-HI]
Rep. John Sullivan [R-OK]
Rep. Betsy Markey [D-CO]
Rep. Michael McMahon [D-NY]
Rep. Walter Minnick [D-ID]
These fine folks should be congratulated! You all should contact your local representatives and ask them why they were not a cosponsor of this bill.

The investment angle on such legislation is obvious: producers of US natural gas like Chesapeake Energy (CHK), ConocoPhillips (COP), and British Petroleum (BP) would be strong beneficiaries of these policies. Manufacturers of natural gas compressors like General Electric (GE) and Ingersoll Rand (IR) would see large increases in orders. Honda Motor Company (HMC), maker of the Honda Civic GX NGV and shareholder in Fuelmaker (the manufacturer of the “Phill”), would also benefit. And don’t forget Clean Energy Fuels (CLNE). Passage of this bill might even prompt consideration for an investment in the natural gas ETF UNG

Support the NAT GAS Act of 2009 (H.R. 1835)
New Alternative Transportation to Give Americans Solutions Act of 2009

The NAT GAS Act:
• Gets more natural gas vehicles (NGVs) on the road faster by extending several tax credits (alternative fuel credit for natural gas, natural gas fueled vehicle credit, and the natural gas vehicle refueling property credit)

• Balances the cost of NGVs on the front end through tax credits for the incremental costs and allows the credits to count against the AMT provisions and be transferable.

• Supports infrastructure investments through tax credits for building refueling stations.

• Sets government as the example requiring that at least 50 percent of new vehicles purchased for government fleets be capable of operating on natural gas.

Natural Gas is Clean, Abundant, and Domestic
Across the board, NGVs achieve some of the cleanest levels of emissions on the road today:

• We import almost 70% of our oil from foreign countries yet natural gas is an abundant and domestic natural resource – 98% of the natural gas used in the United States is from North America.

• Newly available technology has given us access to natural gas from shale, extending proven US natural gas reserves to nearly 120 years at current consumption levels.

• Natural gas is available on nearly every street in America through a network of 1.5 million miles of distribution pipelines across the country.

• AT&T recently announced plans to purchase 8,000 American made natural gas vans. With the incentives included in H.R. 1835, more business can be encouraged to make similar investments.

• According to the EPA, cars running on natural gas cut overall toxic emissions by 93 -95%.

Please contact your Member of Congress and ask them to support H.R. 1835.

Boone on the issue: “America’s national and economic security depends on moving off foreign oil as quickly as possible. Natural gas is the cleanest, most abundant, most economical domestic fuel to replace imported diesel. The U.S. has enough natural gas reserves to last us more than 118 years – we should turn to it as an immediate replacement for foreign oil in fleets and heavy duty vehicles. A battery can’t move an 18-wheeler-the technology isn’t there yet. Natural gas buys a bridge to the future.”
