VIRTUAL MARCH DAY 2 - Boone Needs YOU

The Department of Energy has released the oil import figures for the month of March 2009. The data shows we imported 386 barrels at a cost of $18 billion. While we are importing less oil because of the recession, the percentage of oil we are importing is remaining disappointingly stable. The March numbers show we imported 65% percent of the oil we used.

Over the past 12 months, America has had to import nearly two-thirds of the oil we need. In 2008 that amounted to $475 billion dollars. Keep in mind, this is not a one-time payment like a stimulus package or a bail-out bill. This is an annual cost of over $400 billion per year.

CLICK HERE TO EMAIL YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TODAY AND ASK THEM TO TAKE ACTION TO REDUCE OUR DEPENDENCY ON FOREIGN OIL.

As you know, today is the start of the Pickens Plan Virtual March on Washington. I included some messages below that you should feel free to use when trying to get friends and family to participate.

This is going to be my Facebook status over the next three days:

“Boone Pickens, Rock the Vote and I urged policy makers to pass energy legislation. You can too: http://tinyurl.com/c6b53s

This is what I emailed my friends, family and neighbors – and then sent to all of my Facebook friends:

“Join me, Boone Pickens and Rock the Vote in telling Congress and the President: Help improve our environment, economy & bring us toward energy independence by passing energy legislation now! Be heard today! http://tinyurl.com/c6b53s

April 1-3 is going to be an exciting time for the Pickens Plan and everyone involved! We have over 4.5 million people participating in this March with us. The more folks who contact Congress, the more impact we have on the debate.

For the first time in our nation’s history, we have millions of people converging on Washington, speaking with a unified voice, and demanding a viable, sustainable energy policy that ends our dependence on foreign oil.

It’s Go Time! Contact your member of Congress today!

Boone is counting on you. Visit http://www.pickensplan.com/virtualmarch/ today and let your voice be heard!

Monica,

Great idea! If anyone can make it out to the Capitol, please do so. This really sounds like a great opportunity to have an impact on energy legislation in Kansas.

Kansas Clean Energy Day

Thursday March 19 is the second Kansas Clean Energy Day at the Capitol. As Pickens Plan District leaders, I encourage this group to join hundreds of fellow Kansans to demand clean energy and show our support of the Pickens Plan.

If you are interested in attending:

Prior to noon (11:00 am) - arrive at Topeka Ice Parking Lot, located immediately South of the Santa Fe Apartment Building at 7th and Madison. It will be marked as "Permit Parking Only," but there is approval to use the lot.

Noon - Rally on the Southwest corner of the Capitol at 10th Street and Harrison. There will be buses available to shuttle participants to the rally site form the parking lot.

1:00 pm - Meet with your legislator. Please know who your state representatives are. To locate this information, please visit http://www.ipsr.ku.edu/ksdata/vote/.

2:00-2:30 pm - Bus back to parking lot.

Thank you for your consideration,

Monica Cameron

Al,

The RES (Renewable Energy Standard) sets a minimum percentage of power that has to be generated from rewable sources. The Pickens Plan calls for generating 22% of our electricity from wind power in 10 years, and using natural gas as a transportation fuel to lower our dependence on foreign oil.

The higher the RES, the faster we get on our own resources. I know they may seem similar, but they are different.

Great question Al!

Geoff, Bone's original plan called for energy and provided for independence in 10 years. Why are we now supporting a law that gives us only 25 percent in 16 years?

I wanted to give you a little heads up, insider info on what’s about to happen in Kansas. Boone has a special job for us!

Earlier this week, we launched a program targeting Senator Brownback regarding the Renewable Electricity Standard.

We will target him using:

• Paid phone calls to constituents in their states encouraging them to call their Senator
• Emailing members of the army in Kansas, asking them to send an email via the Pickens Plan website

We'd like to augment this with activity from our District Groups. In addition to generally pushing the groups to participate in the email program, we'd also like to do the following:

- Get you and members of the KS-02 to make phone calls to Senator Brownback
- Get letters to the editor placed in as many KS-02 papers as possible

We will begin running our new ad, Wind Power, throughout Kansas. The ads and phone calls will be running for the next three weeks, so that gives us a limited amount of time to get everyone on board.

Senator Brownback Contact Info:
303 Hart Senate Building
Washington, D.C. 20510
Phone: (202) 224-6521

A little background on the Renewable Electricity Standard (RES):

America has the best wind power in the world. North Dakota alone has the potential to provide power for more than a quarter of the country! But we need a long-term national commitment – including a national renewable electricity standard – to spur the investment needed to tap this great energy resource.

A renewable electricity standard (RES) is a policy that calls for electric utilities to obtain a certain percentage of the electricity they supply from renewable energy resources, such as wind and solar power. 28 U.S. states already have RES policies. A national policy would enable all states to enjoy the benefits of renewable energy development. A national standard of 25% renewable electricity by the year 2025 offers a least-cost, market-friendly way to ensure that we meet an increasing share of America’s growing electricity needs with clean, domestic energy resources.

A national RES can be a boon to America’s economy and to your personal wallet. By making a national commitment to renewable energy, we will be giving businesses the certainty they need to invest in new wind energy manufacturing facilities, and to expand current ones - creating tens of thousands of new American jobs. Also, adding fixed-cost renewables to the electricity mix will help shield consumers from spikes in energy prices, potentially saving us as much as $100 billion in lower electricity and natural gas bills.

There are now bills in the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives calling for 25% renewable electricity by 2025. A particularly important vote on a renewable electricity standard is expected to come up in the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee in late March or early April. Please contact your Senators and Representative to express your support for a national RES and to ask them to co-sponsor the leading RES proposals.

Kelly,

Thanks for taking the time to tune into the summit! What an overwhelming success. It really illustrated the bredth of our bi-partisan, national support.

Hi all, that's me, last summer, putting in a new window on our old farmhouse. Five down, 7 to go. I just watched the National Clean Energy Project Summit! I'm sure if you did, you are as fired up as I am right now. Our local electrical cooperative is having it's annual meeting this coming April. For the first time ever, I plan to attend. I might even throw my name in the hat for a seat on the board.
