AP - Pickens says wind-power mandate should come soon

CHICAGO - Oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens believes a government mandate requiring the use of wind power could come this year.

Pickens told the American Wind Energy Association conference in Chicago on Wednesday that the renewable energy standard the industry wants could come as soon as six months from now.

Pickens announced plans last year for a massive Texas wind farm. He then put those plans on hold because of the economy.

Pickens told the wind energy group that he also believes federal regulators should have authority to make decisions about where power lines are built.

The wind-power industry says the country's current grid isn't big enough to support its development. Plans for new lines often run into opposition from landowners and others.

Boone continues to push the NAT GAS ACT and RES legislation...and it looks like we are finally making headway in Congress...but we need to keep our foot on the gas or Congress will slip back into their old ways.

I know you are busy with a million other things, but Boone needs your help with a couple of small – but important – things that you can do to impact the debate and generate support in Congress. Please contact your local networks and work with local supporters to focus on these three things and it will make it easier when Boone meets with Members of Congress on Capitol Hill.

1) MOC Contacts. Boone needs you to contact your Members of Congress to urge them to support the NAT GAS ACT and RES legislation. Better yet, send an email alert to some of your friends and neighbors to get them to do the same. You can find your MOC contact info at http://www.house.gov/ or http://www.house.gov/

2) Earned Media Outreach. Boone needs you to send op eds and letters to the editor into local newspapers – and call local talk radio.

3) Local Meetings. Boone needs you to host a local meeting/happy hour/reception with local supporters to discuss a local plan of action.

You wouldn’t believe the impact we could have if everyone did just one of these action items...and – if you feel really ambitious – do two or three things...and we will be sure to move our Members of Congress to support Boone’s plan for energy independence.

And please keep me posted on your activities so I can let Boone know before his upcoming meetings on the Hill.

Thanks again for all your help. We really appreciate it.

Boone is lucky to have such a strong team of local supporters like you in congressional districts across the country. But we are not done yet...the fight for energy independence has only just begun...and we need to use the support we generated around the Virtual March and leverage it for action in Congress.

With the Virtual March behind us, the next stop in the fight for energy independence will center around 2 new pieces of legislation: NAT GAS Act of 2009 and RES. Boone needs your help to mobilize local supporters to call your elected officials during the congressional recess (which lasts until April 17th).

Here is what you can do:

1) Generate letters, emails and calls to your Members of Congress during the congressional recess
2) Set up meetings with your Members of Congress during the congressional recess
3) Submit Op Eds & Letters to the Editor to local newspapers and media outlets
4) Organize local meetings, events, happy hours, receptions with local supporters

Let me know if you need background information about this legislation or help drafting letters, op eds, etc. Also, you can find contact info for your Congressmen and Senators at http://www.house.gov/ or http://www.senate.gov/

Thanks again for all your help.

PS- Please keep sending me reports about activity in your area. Boone literally asks for daily updates on how things are going in specific states and congressional districts so he can cite examples of local support when he is meeting with Members of Congress. Your feedback helps him know exactly what’s happening locally.

During March I made 2 trips to Washington to speak with members of Senator Specter's staff and of Congressman Todd R. Platts' staff. These meetings went well and the topic of focus was energy independence, including touching on the Pickens Plan as well as sustainable water resources and other issues that are vital to this nation being set upon a viable course for developing energy independence.

Senator Specter's staff is moving forward with the information that I provided. One particular area of interest was my comments on algae and its potential to play a major part in this nation developing energy independence as well as its potential use in carbon dioxide sequestration. The need to have a viable wind and solar infrastructre was touched on with emphasis and how a water transfer infrastructure to achieve sustainable water resources needed to achieve sustainable renewable fuel production levels sufficent to support energy independence would be dependent upon those renewable energy infrastructures, at least in the early stages of moving towards energy independence if not well on into its accomplishment.

Whenever I bring up the need for or a reference to a wind energy infrastructure, I make reference to the Pickens Plan as a suggestive model of reference. But we need to realize that even T. Boone himself refers to his plan's use of natural gas as a bridge towards developing energy independence. The reason for this is that natural gas is a fossil fuel and its availability does have limits thus though it may be a very effective tool for helping us bridge the gap between now and when we have an ability to support energy independence with renewable fuels to replace imported petroleum crude.

The Natural gas usage, suggested by the Pickens Plan and refered to as a bridging tool to developing energy independence, should only be considered as that, a steping stone, used while we develop the infrastructures needed to support renewable fuels at a scale able to develop and sustain energy independence for this nation.

It is the complexness of what will be needed to achieve and sustain energy independence for this nation that is so over whelming to most individuals, including our leaders in congress and the white house. How so many things have an intracasy in the development of energy independence for this nation. Trying to sort them all out and set thier order of importance to begin is a daunting task and having the population understand their importance is another daunting task.

One good thing about the Pickens Plan is it has brought public attention to the need for this nation to develop energy independence. It has also brought people together that believe that such a course is of vital importance for the future of this nation. For these two facts, I can do nothing more than to applaude Mr. T. Boone Pickens and all others associated with the Pickens Plan and say "JOB WELL DONE, keep up the good work" and I will keep up my efforts both for the Pickens Plan and the other issues that will be needed for this nation to achieve a sustainable energy independence.

Congrats on a Successful Virtual March!

You did it!

Thanks to your help, Boone was able to rally more than 4.5 million people in a Virtual March on Washington from April 1st - April 3rd...and we got Congress' attention.

In fact, Boone was also able to help announce the introduction of Natural Gas legislation with several Members of Congress on Wednesday.

Now we need to keep the pressure on Congress and use the upcoming Spring recess to make sure our elected officials know that we expect action on Energy Independence.

Thankfully, it looks like Congress will will debate real energy reform in the coming months...and thanks to your efforts, Boone is well positioned to be a major player in the debate.

Keep up the good work.

The Virtual March is just days away (April 1-3, 2009)...and we now have more than 3.2 million participants!!

Thanks for all your help.

Please post some of your success stories on the group page. Many of you are hosting local Virtual March parties...submitting Letters to the Editor and calling local media outlets...and reaching out to potential local partners that can mobilize their employees or members...and doing any number of creative and innovative things to spread the word about the Pickens Plan in general and the Virtual March in particular.

As we head into the final countdown, please keep your foot on the gas and continue driving traffic to the Virtual March website at http://www.pickensplan.com/virtualmarch/ and report back your activities to me and the group so that we can make sure Boone knows about all the things you are doing.

Thanks again!

The Virtual March is really taking off...
http://www.pickensplan.com/virtualmarch/

Thanks to your efforts, we have signed up 1,965,333 Virtual Marchers to join us...

While Boone has been recruiting major Virtual March partner companies (like Owens Corning, AEP, Genmar, etc), District Leaders & Group Members like you have been recruiting local energy, auto or environment business owners and executives to also partner with us on the Virtual March.

In order to honor these local supporters, Boone is setting up a page on the Virtual March website that lists these regional and local businesses and organizations that you have recruited to partner with us on the Virtual March!

Just send me their logo and the number of employees, members or other people that they will be communicating with about the Virtual March and we will add to our running tally of local partners on the Virtual March website page.

Thanks again for all your help.
