I have said this before in the forum, but I think we might be smartest to try to contact people who have already started and maintained operational wind farms. They have the knowledge and experience that the rest of us do not.

If we ask them what it we can do to help them expand their operations it must be better than a bunch of novices starting from nothing.

How T. Boone Pickens and The "Pickens Plan" Could Make You Rich By Investing in Green Stocks

T. Boone Pickens owns 40% of a company called Clean Energy Fuels Corp. ( NASDAQ:CLNE ). This is a company that provides natural gas for vehicle fleets in the U.S. and Canada. CLNE designs, builds, finances, and operates the fueling stations.

T. Boone Pickens owns 12% of Westport Innovations, Inc. ( NASDAQ:WPRT ) a leading developer of environmental technologies that enable vehicles to operate on clean-burning alternative fuels.

WRPT works with global automotive leaders such as Cummins Inc., Ford, and BMW to incorporate their technologies into leading manufacturers engines and to explore future commercial opportunities for clean vehicles.

Pickens’ new company, Mesa Water, has been buying up ground water rights in Roberts County, Texas - 200,000 acres in all. He says that over a 30-year period, he expects to make more than $1 billion on his investment of $75 million.

Many others are coming to the realization that water is too cheap. Hence, water rights are a great buy today.

As an individual investor, you can’t trade water rights very easily. But you can invest in a company that owns almost as much water as Pickens does – in actuality, the acre feet that this Company owns are more valuable than what Pickens purchased.

PICO Holdings, Inc., ( NASDAQ:PICO ) together with its subsidiaries, engages in the ownership and development of real estate properties. It owns land and the related mineral rights and water rights in Nevada. The company is involved in water resource development business, such as developing new sources of water for water utilities, municipalities, developers, or industrial users. In addition, PICO Holdings engages in the acquisition and financing of businesses. It operates in the United States and Europe. The company was founded in 1981 and is based in La Jolla, California.

T. Boone Pickens thinks he'll earn $1 billion on his $76 million investment - or basically 13 times his money. PICO - already in this business, with substantial expertise and a portfolio of more valuable water rights - could do even better.

When we connect to the power grid (utility lines) can we get financial support from the state or federal government?

Also, in the power grid system our wind farm would be the first to go online, because it is a renewable energy. Depending on demand for energy the last power plant to go on line (coal, natural gas plant) would be the one to set the price for energy that day.

I am an accountant graduating in December. I am quite familiar with business however don't have too much money saved up. If someone will help finance me as an angel investor, I will open up an alternative energy store in my city and sell wind and solar to the 10's of thousands of farmers in the 100 miles around me. There is no source for alternative energy around me. I am putting together a business plan now and any help anyone could give me would be appreciated and will eventually help the country once I implement this. It could be very profitable and also help the USA and planet. Please help.

Joseph -

Thanks for the group. I have read many articles where wind power systems were set up on remote farms, ranches, or even just residences built away from utility service (off-grid). In these cases, there is not much of an alternative, in other words, they have to gererate their own power by wind, solar, hydro, whatever. Most of these applications are fairly expensive to purchase and install, and require inverter or battery back-up storage.

Now, for those of us on the grid, this expense is hard to justify, and takes many years to recoup the cost if we can only partially reduce our monthly power company bill.

I like the idea of several business models:
1. Individual home or small business use
2. Small town or community
3. Co-op for multiple entities
4. Business or educational campus

But the most important: Entreprenuer model where an investment is made and the power generated can be sold back into the grid. This is not possible in most of the US at the present time. Net metering is offered in some states, but it only offsets your individual power usage. The only way wind or solar can make a significant impact on our national energy policy is to open the grid. I hope everyone understands this. At this point, only the electric utility monopolies can develop this on a for-profit basis, so any business model that we can come up with will be a business with one customer...ourselves.

Please educate me if I am wrong here. It looks like we have to pressure our politicians to create a system like those that exist in Germany and Spain, (Feed in Tariffs, or Renewable Energy Payments), otherwise, where is the individual incentive to invest?

Existing wind systems depend on large subsides.
A new generation of tethered systems will be more economical with larger markets and smaller credits.
