Conversion Now

This site is not associated with any manufacturer, but it welcomes their input.

For the Pickens Plan, and its army, to achieve their full potential should CNG conversion kits be accessible for ALL American's vehicles? Would accessible and affordable CNG conversion kits allow us to use less foreign oil, while allowing us to retain the ability to use traditional forms of fuel when we don't have access to CNG. Should we tell our legislators to support and introduce legislation that makes CNG conversion kits more accessible and affordable! Currently, the Federal EPA “certification” process for CNG conversion kits requires that each kit be certified for use on each vehicle and each model year of that vehicle. Is this appropriate? If you have insight to current CNG conversion kit technology, the justification (or lack thereof) EPA certification regulations, or the politics of these issues, please help educate us all and leave a comment or create a discussion!

CNG in a diesel is a tricky thing, temperatures have to be controlled or you melt the pistons. As far as I know there are no automotive EPA certified kits available. but a lot of people are using the propane modifying kits for boosting trailer towing capacity into daily use. Without monitoring the engine closely, there will be a lot of work for diesel engine rebuilders.

Hi Oscar,
Are these CNG/ propane injected diesels in actual use? If so, are they able to get around the range limitations of CNG (for refueling needs) because they are only using a 25% mixture? Or, is this not an issue?

What much of the diesel trucking industry is doing is using an injection of CNG or propane into the diesel. It cleans up the emissions and increases the horsepower. There are 2 injection kits, 1 for under 8.0L and the other for over 8.0L engines. It is basically a 25% injection of CNG and the rest is still diesel.

According to Mary Anne Carter, it is rated at 33mpg. Since the '09 hybrid is rated at 34, I have to assume it's just CNG. Also, if it's a bi-fuel, it won't get carpool lane stickers. A benefit I've really appreciated with my GX.

This new Toyota Camry "Hybrid" is a dual-fuel gasoline & CNG vehicle?

If you are in the LA area there is a new event posted for the following:

The LA Auto Show- November 21-30 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Honda will be displaying its Civic GX (the cleanest production car in the world!) and Toyota will be displaying its new concept Camry Hybrid -- both of which run on natural gas.

All the manufacturers pay a lot of attention to the reaction they’re getting from the crowds at these shows, and it is a large factor in determining which cars they will produce and sell for the United States market.

New Energy Army Members in the area are encouraged to attend!

You can check out the event here.

I'm from Detroit and just returned after a 10 year absence. Have to say I'm kind of startled by the changes. I'm just starting to learn about CNG fuel alternatives and it will be interesting to see if the big 3 can adopt and adapt!

Thanks for the comment about my post on T. Boone pushing heavy truck conversion to CNG before cars. I hope your right that he pushes for auto conversion after we convert trucks.
Hugh Hemington Comment by Hugh Hemington on November 14, 2008 at 9:23pm
When I refuel in Burbank, there are usually refuse trucks, and airport shuttle buses there refueling too. I've talked to the drivers, and they run routes for days between refills. The fuel is lighter, cleaner and safer.

At clean vehicle shows I've seen large trucks that run on natural gas. Some run on LNG, or liquefied natural gas, with greater range. The only disadvantage of LNG is the gradual "boil-off", but since trucks have a high duty rate, the loss of fuel is minimal.

I've talked to several people from companies and cities who have used the Diesel exhaust filters, and no one likes them. They are a pain to clean and clog under short trip use when the temperature doesn't build up high enough to incinerate the particulates.
