Conversion Now

This site is not associated with any manufacturer, but it welcomes their input.

For the Pickens Plan, and its army, to achieve their full potential should CNG conversion kits be accessible for ALL American's vehicles? Would accessible and affordable CNG conversion kits allow us to use less foreign oil, while allowing us to retain the ability to use traditional forms of fuel when we don't have access to CNG. Should we tell our legislators to support and introduce legislation that makes CNG conversion kits more accessible and affordable! Currently, the Federal EPA “certification” process for CNG conversion kits requires that each kit be certified for use on each vehicle and each model year of that vehicle. Is this appropriate? If you have insight to current CNG conversion kit technology, the justification (or lack thereof) EPA certification regulations, or the politics of these issues, please help educate us all and leave a comment or create a discussion!

You are wrong there. Safeway has tested the conversion in 10 of it's trucks and there is a plan in the works to convert 300 trucks to CNG in the near future. This is not only possible, but it's already started.

Hi Denis,
I am in total in agreement with you. I think part of the problem is that T. Boone's plan can't work, today, for everyone to be running on CNG. I think he first want's to see trucks and fleets go to CNG as industry replaces its use of NG for electricity with wind, sun, and so on. I believe it will be in this transition that we will all be able to push for CNG in ALL OUR vehicles. Once a snowball starts rolling down hill, its hard to stop!

Here is the text of a letter I just sent to Obama. Feel free to use and edit:

We need energy independence now! The Pickens Plan offers us a bridge to the future by converting our current CNG power plants to Wind. We can then use that CNG to power large trucks and cars. This gives us an immediate (10 years) 30% reduction in fossil fuel usage. This reduction can be directly taken from foreign oil imports. While we are in this process, we need to make CNG conversion kits easier to obtain and install in states like California, where the industry has gotten legislation passed that only allows certain companies to purchase and install these kits. This door needs to be open to more installers, and there needs to be incentive for stations to install CNG pumps. This can be started now and the American people will settle for nothing less than immediate action on a plan.

Boone made a good presentation Jon Stewart Show

I am a little worried . I want Boone to push for reduced regulation from EPA and CARB ( California Air Resource Board ) for CNG conversion kit certification, but on the Jon Stewart Show Boone was pushing converting heavy trucks which is fine. The problem is most of Picken's army drives cars not heavy trucks!! Does anyone else see this as a problem.

Hi everyone,

President-Elect Obama has created a website to solicit your views on what important changes should be the highest priorities of his new administration. Click here and you can send him your views.

This is a real opportunity to make the case for the Pickens Plan for Energy Independence. With an army of over 1.3 million strong we can make our collective voices loud and clear.

Make sure he knows we see this as a war on foreign oil's strangle hold over our national economy!

The following are some comments (regarding NG as a transportation fuel) made by "The Western Governors' Association" in February, 2008. It's interesting how many of their conclusions and recommendations are the same ones we have been preaching about.

"Natural Gas/Propane
Fuel Potential for the West
• Natural gas is a secure, domestic resource with 98
percent of the U.S. supply coming from North America. Proven domestic reserves exceed 75 years at current production.
• Five of the nation’s largest natural gas producing states are in the West (CO, NM, OK, TX, WY).
• In addition to current conventional supplies of natural gas, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the U.S. can feasibly produce 10 billion
gallons of gasoline equivalent biomethane annually from sources, such as landfills, animal waste processing and sewage.
• Compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefiednatural gas (LNG), and propane are well known alternative transportation fuels. Natural gas and propane vehicle engine and fueling technology are already developed and in current deployment.
Challenges
• There are only a small number of Original Equipment Manufacturers making CNG, LNG, and propane vehicles in North America.
• EPA emissions certifications are expensive and preclude wide-product variety for the small volume manufacturers that produce conversion systems. Economies of scale are difficult to reach.
• Fueling infrastructure and conversions are costly. Vehicle deployment primarily lies in niche markets or return-to-base fleets, such as taxicabs, street sweepers, transit buses, refuse haulers, school buses, delivery vehicles, trucks and trailers, and airport shuttles.
• Natural gas production has impacts on land and water resources. Technology challenges include reducing the surface footprint of exploration and production, and developing methods to reduce the volume of water and other fluids injected and/or produced to the surface.
• As the volume of biomethane use increases, the greenhouse gases generated in the feedstock gathering and biomethane production process will need monitoring.
Priority Recommendations
• Encourage and support federal legislation that will provide incentives or credits to vehicle manufacturers, many of whom build natural gas and propane vehicles for the international market, to develop and deploy those vehicles for the North American market.
• Encourage Governors to review state alternative fuel incentives to determine if they enhance niche market deployment of natural gas and propane vehicles and fueling infrastructure. Also, review to determine if end users from the public and private sector are able to realize the intended benefits of state incentives.
• Encourage all energy uses of renewable biogas. Specifically, encourage Governors to support incentives or credits at both state and federal levels for biogas used or gathered for all energy applications, including biogas converted to pipeline quality methane.Source: National Renewable Energy
Laboratory"
