Ron,

This may have over simplified things, but I wanted to know what you thought of it.

Dear (Senator/Representative) (Name):

Over $700 billion of this nation’s wealth is transferred to foreign countries this year as a result of the burgeoning U.S. trade deficit. Every credible economist agrees that no society, even one as great as America, can withstand such a colossal wealth transfer away from its shores. Finally a strategy has emerged to attack this problem, and in so doing bring tremendous benefits to our economy, decrease U.S. unemployment, and provide for a cleaner environment. This strategy is called the Pickens Plan. Along with tens of thousands of fellow members, this plan has attracted hundreds of thousands of supporters in a very short time. Why? It simply makes sense.

The Pickens Plan starts with America's natural resources of wind and natural gas. Wind as a major source of energy for our homes and business. Natural gas as a major source of transportation fuel for our current an new vehicles. The Pickens Plan is an important step forward in freeing America from the strangle hold of foreign oil.

The following is a link to T. Boone Pickens' well publicized plan.

I support the Pickens Pan, and as my (Senator/Representative) I want you to support it as well!

Sincerely,

Excellent work, Dave. Shorter is nearly always better. It also avoids taking the specific positions on legislation which some may not agree with. Rather, it just sets out the general goal - a national energy policy, based on the Pickens Plan. Keep up the great work. Ron

Ron,

Is this worthy of being made accessible for others to use, as a sample letter to their legislators? If so, I suggest it be posted for use; however, I'm unsure how this would best be done.

I'm available to help in communications grunt work.

I'm interesting in working on proposals, digging for stats., technical jargon, rather than working on commentary on website. When you need me I'll be here, even for that 3:00am phone call, giggle...

FYI:

I forwarded the following message to Lexi Fish and Brett Horvath, two of the "grassroots organizers" for the web site, and also posted it on HB's forum (he's some form of web master). You are right - there must be a "better way." GREAT IDEA, CLYNTON. Hope they adopt some version of it. Ron

Lexi, Brett, et. al: I've posted this to HB's forum, but wanted to make you aware of it as well. Another idea to improve communications to members. Thank you. Ron

HB, It has been suggested by Clynton that the "Welcome Message" sent to a new member be expanded. I've take the message done by Kim Anderson and others and have edited it. Here's a draft, which as with any draft could use further editing and massaging.

Welcome to the PickensPlan! On behalf of all of the current members of the PickensPlan, thank you for joining this grassroots movement to end our nation's overdependency on foreign oil.

There are many things you should know, especially if you are new to "social networking" sites. To aid you, we suggest that you visit the "Groups" section of the site, then look near the top for "Communications Support - Resources for Members." Visit the Communications Support group, an effort undertaken by volunteer members, and you'll find a "Resource Guide." This guide provides "how to's" as to the use of the site, suggested guidelines for discussions, sample "Letters to Congress," downloadable and printable materials, and many other resources.

We then suggest you view the "Notes" page, to "Find A Group By State." Sign up for the group in your area, and view their recent postings.

Once you have reviewed some of the material there, we suggest that you venture out into the "Groups" and "Forums" and look around. Not only are Groups formed by state or geographic region, but also by college or university, or by interest. Forums exist for discussion of a broad range of issues.

In order to effect a positive change in our national energy policy, the PickensPlan needs your continued involvement. In fact, you can take your first step right now! We encourage you to invite at least FIVE of your friends and colleagues to the site. Have them join you, and us, in addressing this crisis confronting our nation.

Also be certain to check out the "Events" section of the site, to see if any events will be held in your area. There, and on "The Daily Pickens" (part of the Main page), you will also find one or more "Calls To Action."

Be certain to also check out the "Videos" page and the "Pictures" page. It is amazing how creative and inspiring many of our members can be.

While you will likely find many events, discussions, groups, and projects which may interest you, we need your help in these crucial early months to get the word out.
...If you know someone in the press - get them to cover the PickensPlan grassroots movement.
...If you know someone who blogs - get them to cover blog about the PickensPlan.
...If you can write to a Congressman / Congresswoman - please contact them and inform them of your interest in the PickensPlan. Better yet, try to get them to host their own "Town Hall Meeting" in your area for The PickensPlan and renewable energy.
...If you know state or local politicians, or appointed officials, ask them to check out and support The PickensPlan. There are a great many steps state and local officials can undertake to support a sensible energy policy.

Lastly, enjoy the ability to interact with others, work collaboratively on projects, and socialize. Together we can unite to solve one of the major challenges facing this country. Together we can propel domestic alternative energy solutions forward, leading to the creation of U.S. jobs and the preservation (not the export) of our nation's wealth. Together we can, and will achieve. Thank you again for joining the PickensPlan.
