Delmarva Power Lands Wind Power for Delaware
Mid-Atlantic Utility Ranks among First to Meet Tougher Clean Energy Goals
Last update: 3:13 p.m. EDT Oct. 8, 2008

NEWARK, Del., Oct 08, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Delmarva Power's proposed contracts to buy up to 170 megawatts of energy from soon-to-be-built land-based wind projects in Maryland and Pennsylvania were approved Tuesday by the Delaware Public Service Commission, making the utility one of the first in the region to meet one state's more stringent clean energy goals.

"With the approval of these land-based wind contracts -- coupled with the recently-executed Bluewater Wind offshore contract -- Delmarva Power has a solid plan to meet Delaware's goal for 20 percent of our customer's energy needs to be met with clean, renewable sources by 2019," said Delmarva Power Region President Gary Stockbridge.

"We knew wind power would be imperative to meeting those clean energy goals and we firmly believe that by investing in the wind, both on land and off the coast, Delaware and the entire region will be better for it," Stockbridge added.

Highlights of all of the approved wind power contracts include:

-- A 25-year agreement to buy up to 200 megawatts from a wind farm located off Delaware's coast, which would be built by Bluewater Wind Delaware LLC by 2015.

-- Two, 20-year contracts with Annapolis, Maryland-based Synergics Wind Energy for up to 100 megawatts of wind energy and renewable energy credits. The wind farms, slated for completion in 2009 and 2010, would be built on land in western Maryland.

-- A 15-year contract with Arlington, Virginia-based energy supplier AES Corporation for up to 70 megawatts of wind energy and renewable energy credits. The wind farm, slated for completion in 2009, would be built on land in north central Pennsylvania.

"When we set on this course, we wanted to increase the amount of renewable energy in our supply mix, we wanted to start that supply as soon as we could and we wanted to do it at the least cost and risk to our customers. By approving these land-based contracts, the Commission has allowed us to reach all these goals," said Stockbridge.

Delmarva Power, a public utility owned by Pepco Holdings, Inc. (POM: 17.73, +0.06, +0.3%) , provides safe and reliable energy to nearly 500,000 electric delivery customers in Delaware and Maryland and over 121,000 natural gas delivery customers in northern Delaware.

Tuesday night after the next Presidential debate, we are going to host the largest e-Rally ever for energy independence!

On October 7 at 10 pm EDT, just before the Presidential debate ends, log on to PickensPlan.com to rally and show the politicians that we mean business!

We have their attention - but what you do right now matters more than ever. Click here to RSVP now to attend the Pickens Plan e-Rally on Tuesday night. You can also click here to leave a comment asking the two candidates to support the Pickens Plan.

During the debate the candidates will have their say. Now it's time for you to have your say. We will deliver your comments and the comments of everyone who attends the e-Rally to both Presidential candidates within 48 hours of the end of the Presidential debate.

Also, we need you to do one more thing - find one friend and ask them to attend the e-Rally with you. How big can we grow this e-Rally? How many Americans will join our New Energy Army and join this e-Rally for energy independence? Only you can answer that question!

We have tremendous momentum, over 13,000 strong joined our post debate chat for energy independence after the last Presidential debate. You won't want to miss this event! RSVP right now and forward this email on to a friend today!

Someone told that it is illegal for commercial trucks to use biodiesel fuel in Deaware. Is this true? And if so, why?

i am new to this website, but the wind power project in Delaware has been an interest to me for sometime. We American's are so cynical, but I refuse to be skeptical about this Pickens Plan. He is a man in the private sector attempting to do a positive thing for this country, we should be supportive and join in wherever possible. Our ingenuity is what has made this a great nation. So, on that note, other than this "group" how can we become proactive in Delaware?

True, he does have natural gas holdings, but I think his main goal is to get us off foreign oil. He has the resources to do it and realizes that the government is doing nothing. He might as well make a little money doing a good thing. Someone is always going to make money off of energy production; whether it is an American and U.S. companies or foreign companies like Bluewater Wind. Personally, I'd rather pay the American guy for electric than a foreigner. The same goes for fuel for my vehicle. I'd rather pay for American oil and gas, American CNG, American hydrogen or American electricity than anything from a foreign company. That is one of the reasons I am backing this plan while a windfarm is scheduled for construction off the coast of DE. I would rather pay T. Boone than Bluewater.

A knowledgeable friend of mine has pointed out that Pickens has quite an agenda going. He has huge natural gas holdings, thus his push for a car powered by natural gas.

Also, who is going to fund the wind farms?
I'm not against Pickens, and feel that it may "take a village" to get real alternative energy happening...

This bill is in the first step in the legislative process. Introduced bills go first to committees that deliberate, investigate, and revise them before they go to general debate. The majority of bills never make it out of committee. Keep in mind that sometimes the text of one bill is incorporated into another bill, and in those cases the original bill, as it would appear here, would seem to be abandoned.
