Lets talk about the Natural Gas Act of 2009

* Posted by PickensPlan on November 12, 2009 at 2:28pm in Natural Gas Discussion Group

Believe it or not, we are already in the middle of November!

Be sure to ask your U.S. Representative and your U.S. Senators to support The Natural Gas Act of 2009, and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same.

Click here to support the NAT GAS Act of 2009.

Information is key when it comes to Natural Gas. Especially if we want to offset imported diesel to power heavy trucks.

You can read all about Natural Gas by clicking here. Information on the importance of getting Natural Gas Vehicles rolling in the United States can be found by clicking here.

Feel free to share your thoughts!

Passing along a message from the Sierra Club...

Here in Washington, we have a great opportunity to become the first state in the nation to go completely coal free. We need your help to make this happen.

Washington's only coal plant is also our biggest polluter. The TransAlta coal plant near Mount Rainier emits more greenhouse gases, poisonous mercury and Rainier-harming nitrogen oxide than any other polluter in the state of Washington. The National Parks Department has said that this plant harms more national parks and protected areas than any other coal plant in the nation.

Take action now to stop this pollution.

Governor Gregoire's administration recently made a pollution deal with the TransAlta coal plant which public interest groups say does not do enough to protect public health or our environment. The Governor's office is currently taking public comments on this proposed deal.

Governor Gregoire's administration needs to hear your voice: tell state leaders to protect the public from haze, mercury and global warming pollution.

Thanks,

Sarah Rasmussen

P.S. Comments are due by November 6. Pass this email on to your friends so they can join you in taking action!

Call or write your Senators and Representatives today and ask them to support the WECHAR bill. The use of biochar can reduce water drain from invasive weeds, builds soil fertility with microbial growth, carbon is sequestered in the soil, and the pyrolysis process can also produce biofuel and syngas.

Support WECHAR bill to promote development of biochar.

Solar Works In Seattle:
See how your neighbors are harnessing solar energy!

Northwest SEED has teamed up with Solar Washington and Seattle City Light to coordinate the annual Seattle Solar Tour October 3rd, 2009. The tour provides Seattlites an opportunity to see how their local neighbors and businesses are making solar energy work.

The self-guided tours allow visitors to drive by or visit more than 30 homes and businesses that use solar energy systems. Many of these sites will have a resident/owner or solar installer on hand to discuss their experience and answer questions.

A number of Seattle Green Power Projects, projects funded by Seattle City Light's innovative "Green Power" program, are also included as “drive-by” sites. These projects include the Ballard Library, Meridian Park Elementary School, the Seattle Aquarium and many others of note.

Visitors are encouraged to start in various neighborhoods including Queen Anne-Magnolia, North Seattle, Shoreline, South Seattle, and West Seattle.

Print a tour map, and begin your Solar Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For site information and to download a map, visit http://www.solarwashington.org/tour.

Those interested in joining others to take in the solar sites via bicycle can do so via the North Seattle Solar Bike Tour, organized by Sustainable Greenlake. Just check the North Seattle tour map to find the 10am bike tour kickoff site.

In addition to displaying solar electric and solar hot water systems at work, the Seattle Solar Tour will also feature energy-saving techniques and sustainability through building design, the use of green materials, and electric cars. The Tour also provides helpful, real-world examples of costs and how to save money with federal and state incentives.

The Seattle event is part of the National Solar Tour organized by The American Solar Energy Society (ASES). In its 14th year, the event is expected to draw up to 150,000 people, participating across Washington State, and in over 40 states across the country. Not in Seattle? Visit www.ases.org to find a solar tour near you!

WA District-01:

August may be vacation time for many people, but our reliance on foreign oil didn’t take any time off.

In August alone we imported 355 million barrels of oil and sent $25.2 billion overseas – the most spent on foreign oil out of any month this year.

We are digging ourselves deeper into a hole every day and our economy and security are suffering.

Have you contacted your Members of Congress about the NAT GAS Act yet? If not, click here to send them an email.

Congress is currently focused on the health care debate and that will continue to dominate Washington’s attention in the coming weeks. But our time is coming and the situation continues to be dire.

Click here to email your Members of Congress about the NAT GAS Act today.

We are proceeding with our solid support for the NAT GAS Act (H.R. 1835 and S. 1408) making its way through the U.S. House and Senate. In the House, H.R. 1835 has more than 80 bi-partisan co-sponsors. In the Senate the NAT GAS Act is also supported by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

We need to stay engaged, focused and active. Click here to email your Representative and Senators today.

Pickens Plan Action Alert

Please support the NAT GAS Act of 2009
Complete the form below to encourage your U.S. Representative and your U.S. Senators to support the NAT GAS Act of 2009.

This legislation has almost all of the elements for natural gas that we have been pushing for in the Pickens Plan.

* It extends the tax credit for natural gas used as a transportation fuel.
* It provides a tax credit for 80 percent of the additional cost when purchasing a dedicated natural gas vehicle.
* It extends the tax credit for the installation of natural gas refueling pumps.
* It creates incentives for the major manufacturers to sell natural gas vehicles (which they already produce for overseas markets) in the United States.

An Invitation to: A Celebration of Biochar

Make Biochar and Biochar compost with Sean Barry, Larry Williams, and
Rich Haard on September 19,20 and 26,27 at Fourth Corner Nurseries,
Sand Road, Bellingham, WA.

Some Background

Biochar is charcoal, plain and simple - charcoal converted from
biomass. The name Biochar was coined to differentiate it from charcoal
because Biochar is meant to be used in soil. See http://terrapreta.bioenergylists.org

Sean Barry is coming to Bellingham, Washington from Stillwater,
Minnesota to promote the production and use of Biochar. Sean is
engineer and owner of Troposphere Energy, LLC. He is bringing a
portable kiln he has built for us to test and use. This is a tool that
can make positive inroads to combat global warming/climate change and
to promote soil improvement research using charcoal-in-soil
techniques.

This kiln he is bringing here is an open source technology -- A United
Nations, Food & Agriculture Organization portable kiln, that can make
~700-1000 lbs of Biochar in 24 hours and is designed to be operated by
2 people. It can be used anywhere in the world where there is biomass
and requires only basic wood cutting tools. By helping Sean perfect
this prototype kiln, we can learn more about making Biochar and share
it for gardening and/or farm research.

Events Scheduled

Saturday, September 19 - Setting up, firing, and monitoring the kiln
Sunday September 20 - Harvest and breakup the Biochar product
Saturday September 26 - Another kiln run, this time with dry garden
waste -- AND making Biochar based compost with Larry Williams
Sunday September 27 - Again, harvest and breakup of Biochar and
distribution of Biochar for in-soil research in gardens or on farms.

Who will attend this admission free event? Are you interested in
production and use of Biochar? Then you are welcome to attend.
Safety concerns and working farm location require proper clothing,
gloves, shoes, and attendance at a safety discussion. Loading the
kiln is safe and
more hands help. After that, there is not much activity, managing
fire draft and moving stacks. Likely, we will have an evening
barbeque on Saturday.
Open discussions will be ongoing and Sean will be available all of
September 15-30 in the Washington area to bring the kiln to where
there is biomass that can be converted into Biochar.
