Yes, and Bio-Diesel is one answer for this complicated problem. I am looking into it for the trucks for the charity I am starting.

I installed the first commercial, 24/7, unattended, computer controlled CNG pumping installation in Grand Jct Colorado in the 1980's at on of my three Petro-lock commercial fueling stations. It was pilot demonstration project with the compressor installation and conversion kits to a flex fuel gasoline/CNG powered vehicles all provided by a Canadian firm.

The demonstration project lasted 8 months. The cost of the conversion kits beyond the gratis pilot demonstration vehicles (15 vehicles) and the efficiency of the conversion did not provide satisfactory service. Three were of the vehicles were police cruisers.

I converted my GMC suburban with 86,000 miles to a flex fuel gasoline/CNG vehicle. It was very lethargic in acceleration. I overhauled the engine and increased the compression ratio and the suburban ran and acellerated like a scalded dog!

I submit the test was unsuccessfull because all of the vehicles did not have the compression ratio to utilize the higher octane CNG fuels. Dedicated CNG vehicles with computer controlled air, fuel, temperature, etc. is a different story. I would not advise anyone to convert an older model vehicle without a computer controlled fueling system and lower compression ratio to consider changing that vehicle to a flex fuel gasoline/CNG vehicle.

The City of Sacramento has converted all of their diesel powered buses to CNG. CNG fueling is a viable option for those vehicles who have a limited range from their CNG compressor fueling station. The primary limitation at this time: What comes first the chicken or the egg? (CNG vehicles or commericial compressor stations.

The environmental benefits of CNG powered vehicles is unquestionable. All you need to do is have followed a Sacramento diesel powered bus on a hot August day contrasted with following a CNG powered bus in 2008,

Thanks, John. I'm in TX, not for sure if our vehicle inspection reqts include what you're referring to as a "smog check." We definitely have emissions tests that are part of the TX inspection process. The problem I had at the outset was that conversion kits were only available for a few, almost all Ford, vehicles, for which it was cost-effective for the vendors to foot the appx $200,000 bill for make/model/year certification with the friggin EPA. The cost is dauting- The Jiffygas folks provide a kit for CNG, LPG, or H, but it's $5000! Heck, my Tahoe's not even worth $5000 as it is! Have you done a conversion before? It would be interesting to hear some war stories.

If you don't have to do a smog check you can ignore the EPA.
CNG and LPG runs cleaner and will pass smog but the EPA makes money on the certification process.
There are people working to change the burden imposed by the EPA, but it will take time as the government doesn't give up free money.
Ask yourself who's getting screwed most, you or your government?

This all started for me, about 9 months ago when I decided I wanted to convert my Chevy Tahoe to LPG (I don't have CNG piped directly to my house), and found that it's practically impossible (unless your vehicle is already "certified") due to the archaic policies of the EPA! I'm mad as hell and want to do anything I can in my area to make CNG/LPG conversions available to people!!!
