Did you know that there are only 7 states in the Union that require that their state's budget be balanced at the end of each fiscal year? In 1996 there were 32 states that operated under such a law. It seems as though there has been a growing trend leading away from economic common sense.

My state's law stipulates that each department will be allocated funds IF the funds are available. What a great philosophy!

Kudos to the fiscally responsible!

I'll get behind that. The more I hear about the economic troubles and the stimulus, the more angrified I get. Since when does this country reward irresponsible behavior? I've been driving around for years looking at these McMansions and wondering what in the world these people do for a living to be able to afford these houses. Now I know, they couldn't! So, because I live in a small house (too small for my family, actually), I get penalized in taxes because the Smiths had to keep up with the Jones' and overextended themselves to the point where they faced foreclosure? I get penalized because these Wall Street execs ran their banks into the ground yet still got insane bonuses? I get penalized because the Big 3 automakers made bad business decisions? Gee, maybe it is just me but when gas is $4 a gallon, I really want to buy a Hummer (note the sarcasm). What about Linens & Things and Circuit City? They are closing or closed, does this mean they will get some of this Federal money and reopen? Is it the government's responsibility? Maybe I don't understand how things work but I've been under the impression that if you make bad business decisions with your business, your business closes. Period. There aren't any "do overs" in the adult world. Are there? If your state can't balance its budget, then perhaps they should stop spending money until they can. And why aren't the American sheeple (yes, you read right) up in arms about this? I'd really like the Sheeple to say "we're not paying our taxes, just like our elected officials. And while we're at it, we're not going to pay our mortgages either. Foreclose on us all". But it won't happen. There are some of us who are responsible and pay our bills. On time even.
Sorry for the vent in your thread. But I had to get it out. And my state has a new fiscal deficit record. Funny how our governor came into office with a $45M SURPLUS and it was GONE within 6 months to a year. Fiscally responsible? Not in my state.

No apologies necessary! You tell 'em Julie! (And I love the "Julie-isms"-Angrified & Sheeple)- You speak the truth! That is what it is going to take to get the attention of Congress and the Adm-Angry citizens who are willing to trade comfort for independence and democracy. It's time once again to pay for our freedom. And are the country's leaders truly listening to the needs in this energy crisis? No! They are pacifying us so that they can figure out how to regulate and milk whatever new technology comes out in the energy industry. They threw the green concern a little bone with this last spending package. They're trying to buy time to figure out how to line their own pockets. Instead of trying to stay ahead of the Chinese and other countries, "we" are too greedy and stupid to invest into people like Greg Lampert (see the discussion on solar power) so that he can make such technology readily available to the general public. (Lainey shakes her head...)We have much work to do.
