Last week I purchased 4 - 6 volt deep cycle batteries because they were being dumped for $66 Can. each 210 amp hr ( whatever that means). On the way home I made up a reason for purchasing them.

My plan is to charge these batteries with a solar panel, and use the 12 volts to run a solar/ thermal water heater to preheat my home water system. A second pump will move water from the reservoir tank to a radiator when heat is needed in the home.

I reason that by reducing my need for expensive PV to produce electricity to run 12 volt pumps and rely on solar/thermal to recover most of the energy which is used without being converted, I should have a more efficient cost/benefit system.

My son has ordered a micro computer for $38 which he says will handle the brain work, but I am guessing at the size of other components and resize when operational. We do not know what is available for sensors. Think I need a charge controller. Do I purchase one from Canadian Tire which is now owned by Americans, or does someone have a circuit that I can build ? A long time ago, I earned a diploma in Electronic Operations and Computer Controls. - A long time ago. The oscilloscope I built during the course had vacuum tubes.

what do you think about the potential for flat commercial buildings and solar panels?

As a commercial real estate developer in South Texas going Solar, this group promises to be one of my favorites.

Net-metering laws in Texas are a bit "blegh" towards consumers, (we won worst practices for net-metering!) but if you can get a group of people together or an installer who can act as an aggregate, you can negotiate what price the utility credits excess generation. This is important because utilities in Texas, legally, don't have to buy the power you generate in excess! So it may not be worth it to try to generate 100% of what you need.

Contact your local utility & find out more.

Nancy,

Yes good news about new efficiencies in solar cell technology. hahaha, I don't know who David Epps is.

Nancy,

thanks for the link, interesting news. check out the following link to learn more about the grid tie solar w/ battery backup

Nancy,

check out the Apollo Solar SPC 120/240 SOLAR POWER CENTER, its a grid tied inverter with battery backup. We carry these.

I designed the Solar & Thermal CSP troughs panels to rotate a full 360 degrees, allowing them to shed snow and any 'debris' that might tend to accumulate.

Nancy,

the 250 watt plug n play is a grid tie inverter. Similar to larger grid tie inverters, it does not provided power during a blackout. The inverter shuts down when there is a power outage. Although there are more sophisticated inverters on the market that are there called, "grid tied solar with battery backup" that automatically switch to battery power when the grid is out.

the 250 watt plug and play is strictly made for grid connection

Nancy,

No problem, thanks for the suggestion about starting a group here. right on, I hope I get people from all over the world tuning into our live transmission at Solar Power International 2008!
