I would like to comment. I am a proponet of wind energy in fact I am working on a preoject in the Caribbean which looks very good. They are running on diesel generators and it costs a lot for the power. However i would throw out nuclear if we can reactivate the breeder reactor technology and recycle the fuel. The first reactors were actually breeders, the reason it got shut down was due to non-proliferation. Well guess what the bad guys already have access. So lets move on cuase we will need the power.
As far as solar gos, th markt is very tight and for those who think this is an answer you have to realize that it takes far more resources to produce a solar cell than you will ever get out of it in its lifetime. So there is now free lunch. Right now I think wind and recycled nuclear is the way to go for electricity. As for transportation fuels, biodiesel from algae is an option.

Alos, I worked for NASA 30 years ago and we had a design for a diesel engine that would get 90 miles per gallon, why are we messing with hybrids and all of that?? We could be running on biodiesel from algea and get great mileage..
My 2 cents worth

'Green-collar' jobs a growth area, U.S. group says

Companies are stepping up their environmental initiatives, and that may mean a boom in "green-collar" jobs.

A recent forecast by the American Solar Energy Society found that renewable energy and energy-efficient industries were responsible for the creation of nearly 8.5 million jobs in 2006, and by 2030 that number is expected to reach 40 million.

Colleges and universities are taking notice, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., a job placement consulting group.

Many have introduced specialized degree programs in eco-commerce, environmental accounting, green and social marketing, and ecological economics.

"The demand for 'green-collar' jobs is really exploding, especially as the cost of energy continues to climb," said John Challenger, the group's chief executive. "Students need to start thinking about developing skills that will give them an edge for these types of careers that did not even exist until recently."

Popular jobs include urban planners, forestry professionals and environmental lawyers, Challenger said. There is also a growing demand for architects and engineers with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit.

I would also donate time to get green jobs started in either the Albany NY area or the seacoast of New Hampshire.

I live in west Texas, and oil is everywhere, and I'm probably one of about 20 people in my area who even care about finding energy beyond oil. The Permian Basin where I live is nothing but oil oil oil, and I would love to see the area become more diverse. And with as much sun as we get here, we'd be a great spot for a solar plant.

tsgt richard martin, you're right about the solar cells. There's only a handful of companies in the world that produce commercial sized solar systems, and because the demand is so high, they're completely sold out for years.

There's many new and exciting technologies coming out in the field of solar equipment, but sadly, there's only a few companies that even produce the things. If more manufacturers were involved, prices may drop, and the companies would have real motivation to "improve" their product, instead of letting universities do it.

This should be one of the top 5 priorities of this country for all kinds of reasons. The one big potential problem is the same thing was occuring in the 1970's until oil prices fell. The biggest question here is how is this movement going to continue if oil prices fall? I have not heard anyone address this question.

also,it seems impossible to find solar panels(new or used) that can actually save us money and lower the greenhouse eefect...any ideas?
