I spent weeks looking for an affordable bi-fuel conversion kit with no luck. The $1,200 dollar kits came from Argentina but i was told they are not EPA approved and therefore no reputable service would install them. On further investigation it seems EPA approval cost about 100k and is only good for 1 size engine and must be renewed(another 100k?) every year so that is why these companies have not found it cost effective to seek approval. The quotes for bi-fuel (gasoline/CNG) installation where from $12 to$14k depending on tank sizeand vehicle type. I think if there where $2 to $3,000 conversions available ( need to be bi-fuel untill infrastructure builds) there is plenty of demand
Brian,
You are right on the money. I live in Minnesota and had the same experience. I was told that what use to be a $800-1,000 conversion to natural/propane gas on my pickup was now costing almost $4,000.00 and as far as this dealer could tell, the government was only interested in the extra money they could extract for each engine.
Would you believe that natural gas for vehicles here is only $0.89 a gallon and I believe even in California, its $2.50
It looks like we need a lot less government and a lot more information on conversions as not everyone can afford to buy those new expensive vehicles.
Exactly, If the goernment (EPA) would get out of the way it seems the economics would take care of the situation.
Where did you find a $4,000 conversion ; that's almost affordable?
The following is an e-mail link you can use to contact this company. I believe the owners name is Eric and he really knows his business. carb@carbturbo.com
Note: I e-mailed Glenn Beck at CNN and tried to get him to pick the problem we are now talking about, but have seen no movement from them as yet.
Hope this helps....
If we have a CNG outdoor grill infrastructure, why can't we use the same technology in the automobile, hell can't we just buckle it in a baby seat? Seems if there is a phneumatic input valve at the intake manifold, even slow flow addition would cut liquid fuel use and could use existing technology that is in every household in America.
The EPA approval needs careful understanding of what they can and cannot do, they can talk about engine size for approving entire system change, but for one point part modification, or arrangement of existing approved parts, then the new technology would not be conversion but addition. Leave the car as is, just find the correct point of entry for the new fuels and make certain that the infrastructure for your car is inspected every year (or more often) by an approved mechanic for the specific fuel used, every fuel fits somewhere and has some license attatched to its safe commerce. The car is a combination of various technologies, averaged out to fit the needs of many, accumulating skills and technology into one place. You are seeking to add more to the basket, as long as you aren't changing risk factors, you should be good to go.
I am looking to find the car power plant that never turns off, is pluged into the grid when it is parked and continues to generate.
Pardon me, but you don't have a CNG grill, you can have a natural gas grill operating on line pressure, less can a couple of pounds! CNG is NG compressed to 3,000 0r 3,600PSI. That's the problem, not finding a hole in the engine to burn it. That's why conversions are so expensive and filling stations hard to find.
Good luck beating the EPA with your concept. There are answers, it's just that they aren't simplistic and easy.
I have been working on this as a business opportunity and will upload my list of conversion companies that are member of the Natural Gas conversion Association in Washington DC.
I would like to talk to someone with the Pickens group about implemention of this plan.
It is political and economic and will not work without vehicles that will accept the gas product.
Who is leading the pack on implementation. I want to get involved in this. T. Wood Tulsa OK>
This is of the upmost importance and needs to start now, YESTERDAY!
I am looking to create conversion/filling stations at three local specific locations in the Salem, OR area. I believe I can get the investors needed to get such a important part of this plan off the ground.
I have been diagnosed with cancer. It's time I get my ass off it's self and do something while I stioll have time! AND I FULLY INTEND TO!
