Got a Garage, Than You do already have potential for a NG fueling station. Honda made a Meter/Fueler which could be conviently connected to a NG Port from an existing Gas Line, which most homes already have- eleminating the need for a costly Fuel distribution system.
It's already built!
Problem would be with obtaining NG on the Road. Seems like that could also be worked around as most filling stations already also have NG lines.
Course, Hwy Taxes, or lack of them may be a Spoiler. Should/Could be worked out, it seems.
NATURAL GAS - The Other Alt. Fuel.
Dear Pickens Plan Members. There are many choices for alternative electric energy but the real question is; which is the most cost effective for where I live? Pickens Plan is a NATIONAL plan that promises to bring cost effective energy drawn from the windy Mid-US where the wind is strong and steady and solar power from our dessert areas. The reason for doing this is to free-up natural gas for our transportation fleet, which uses 38% of our imported oil and for automobiles as a second fuel choice. Right now the electric energy generation part of the plan is not as important (unless you live where natural gas or heating oil is used for energy) as moving our transportation away from gasoline and diesel into natural gas. What can you do to help with this? If you have mechanical inclinations learn about using NG as a fuel or if you know mechanics try to steer them into auto/truck conversions that use natural gas as a dual fuel choice. Send letters and emails to your gov. representatives telling them you want them to adopt Pickens Plan. Vote for propositions that offer to expand natural gas distribution for fuel. We need more distribution of NG as a fuel. Sincerely, FredDC
NEWS ITEM: Nancy Pelosi makes personal investment in Pickens Plan. I don’t know how or to whom she gave $50 to 100k (she wasn’t very specific) but she told Tom Brokaw today on Meet the Press. Will have to wait until next week to get the transcript.
Yes - I saw the story on the 1974 Ford where this was done back then, which I remember, and there have been others. Add 34 years of technology and we can do it better. Availability on the road is just like when cars started to offer diesel 20-some years ago, and now the coverage is there. For those saying "no can do" bring on the ideas... all are options!
I would do it immediately, even if it poses some inconvenience at the onset. Great attitude Fred! How do we get folks to stop saying "no" to every suggestion or alternative without giving them a fair hearing. We can say no at anytime, why do it at the beginning. Innovation only happens when we listen to one another and build on ideas as we go.
You bet! I would do it without hesitation. Before, this will happen we will need to aggressively expand the Natural Gas refueling capabilities across the USA.
I agree, more stations are needed. I would have to drive 10 miles one way to refuel. Another option would be to include the Gas converter by Honder as part of a new home build. I would likely put the Honda converter in my garage.
It's a catch-22 though. In order to convince people to spend the money to convert, they'll need a place to fuel up. The market economy won't invenst in fueling stations unless there is a demand. As much as I despise government involvement, there would have to be some type of tax break or credit to gas stations to add NG pumps (something similar to the Florida program promoting the now defunct E85 "solution.").
I own a "flex-fuel" vehicle and read somewhere that these vehicles are very easy to convert to NG. Have to go back and dig for this article to share.
In a word: yes. Most homes already have a connection, so only a modification for refueling at home would be needed. As far as on the road, most service stations already have the infrastructure necessary. Additionally, if the tanks could be interchangeable like for BBQ grills, then it could be as simple as unplugging one from the trunk and plug a new tank in. We could buy it by the tank.
I just bought a Honda a few years ago because of their fuel efficiency. Once there are more NG stations available, my wife and I are there.
