Anything we do, whether increasing production of domestic oil or developing alternative energy, which is the real long term answer, will take time. We can only achieve effects immediately by individual conservation. We have to all become acutely aware of the consequenses of every action we take. Our energy crisis has been a long time coming and it will not be solved overnight. No single thing can be blamed for our problems. We always want to blame them...well folks..WE ARE THEM. We are the problem and we are the answer. Small errors of judgement repeated over time can bring down a team, an organization, a country or a civilization. Small acts of discipline repeated over time can empower a team, an organization, a country or a civilization. It has to be a combined effort by everyone. It's time to take responsibility for our actions and to take responsible actions.

Wayne, I commend you for starting this discussion. Based on the replies, it does not seem you will change people's behavior. It seems to me that Americans want a fish a day instead to learn how to fish. If you google european countries you will see a significant difference about people reacting (i.e.), to efficient driving. Why Americans believe that we cannot learn from other nations as for example from France about nuclear energy? I know the answer: Our leaders tell us that we are number one on almost everything. That's BS. We are now in the slum and I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel... yet.
Let's get together outside the PP (see my email below) to define a campaign for the needed change.

WITH THE MANY WAYS TO REDUCE THE DEMAND FOR OIL, THE STEP WITH THE MOST IMMEDIATE RESULT IS THAT OF FUEL CONSERVATION ...... OR DRIVING THE SPEED LIMIT. THERE ARE A FEW VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE REDUCED SPEED BUT THE GENERAL DRIVING PUBLIC HAS NOT YET JOINED THE PROGRAM.
SINCE OUR LIFE STYLE WAS DEVELOPED ON CHEAP ENERGY, THE GOVERNMENT AND OIL COMPANIES MUST STAR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS TO OUTLINE PERSONAL SAVINGS AND REDUCTION IN OIL DEMAND THAT CAN RESULT FROM REDUCING DRIVING SPEED.

Hello B. Green, I commend you for your posting and smart conclusion that "OUR LIFE STYLE WAS DEVELOPED ON CHEAP ENERGY".

We cannot wait for THE GOVERNMENT TO START EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS... to increase EFFICIENCY such as conserving electricity, fuel, etc. WE HAVE TO DO IT OURSELVES!

For some obscure reason the Pickens Plan does not promote CONSERVATION at all even though that CONSERVATION must be the first step toward ending our foreing oil dependency. If we become efficient, we will reduce our 25% energy consumption without giving away our life style, just through common sense.

Consuming 25% of the planet's energy while we can produce only 3% of the total energy available NOW, is a guaranteed way to become dependent.

I AGREE THAT CONSERVATON IS A FACTOR IN REDUCING THE DEMAND FOR ENERGY. HOWEVER, IT APPEARS THAT THERE ARE VERY FEW OF US THAT THINK THAT WAY.

I NOTE THAT ACTIVITY ON YOUR SITE HAS DROPPED NOW THAT THE PRICE OF OIL IS NO LONGER AN ISSUE. PEOPLE HAVE SHORT MEMORIES AND BAD ENERGY HABITS WILL RETURN. YES SOME CONSERVATION STEPS HAVE BEEN TAKEN BUT THE NEED FOR MORE ARE ON HOLD UNTIL THE MONEY FACTOR COMES INTO PLAY AGAIN. THE WORLD ECONOMY IS CURRENTLY THE DRIVING FORCE TO REDUCE THE DEMAND FOR OIL.
