Nevada Wind Turbine Maker To Build Windspires In Manistee

MANISTEE - A Nevada manufacturer will partner with a Manistee tooling maker to build more urban-friendly vertical wind-turbines in this Northern Michigan community that will generate hundreds of new jobs after the Manistee County Board approved a $400,000 grant Tuesday.

Mariah Power of Reno, Nevada, approved the partnership with MasTech Manufacturing Inc. in Manistee on Monday night, contingent upon commission approval of the grant, Commission Chairman Allan O'Shea said in an email message to MITechNews.Com. O'Shea also said Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm phoned Mariah Power Owner Mike Hess to assure him his company was very welcome in Michigan. MITechNews.Com was unable to reach Hess for comment on Tuesday.

Earlier Hess had expressed concern that his company's bid to come to Michigan had become a political hot potato after Mariah's bid for a $2 million grant from Michigan's 21st Century Jobs Fund was rejected by a screening board. The screening board, selected by the Michigan legislature, didn't believe Mariah could meet its sales projections, even though the company has a backlog of more than 3,500 orders, or more than a year's production.

With a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant now approved by the Commission, Mariah will work with MasTech to build vertical wind axis called Windspires. The unit stands about 30 feet high and operates with three sets of airfoils that catch wind and rotate around a vertical axis.

The Windspire turns a 20-foot tall rotor that generates electricity, and an inverter converts electricity from direct current to alternating current for residential or commercial use. The unit can generate approximately 2,000 kilowatt hours per year with average winds speeds of 12-mph, and sells for around $5,000, plus installation costs.

The joint venture will create 40 plus jobs initially with the promise of 120 new jobs in this rural region near Lake Michigan within three years. Michigan would be the only place in the world where this cutting-edge, clean technology will be built, said MasTech Operations Manager John Holcomb. Together, Mariah and MasTech will now partner with Mariah to churn out 300 Windspires each month, with plans to expand production to more than 1000 a month by 2011.

We have received a little help from Congress and we need to keep the pressure on them to keep the Alternative Energy Industry alive. Why they cannot see this is beyond me. Keep in front of them to allow long term tax credits. One year for Wind is a joke. If we ever needed the Pickens Plan to apply its force on Congress, it is now! We need millions of people not thousands to create a loud and convincing voice. It is vital to the industry and millions of potential jobs.

Copy,Paste, and Send to everyone you know.

America is sitting on an amazing untapped wind resource, the wind corridor that stretches from Texas to North Dakota...our population is stabilized but our agricultural lands are devastated from decades of food exports.

with bio-char production as dump load regulation,in conjunction with power storage solutions the wind power capacity can go in at an astounding rate...the wind fixes the soil ,the soil sequesters the carbon and gives life......our entire world is unsustainable as is, and the changes required don't stop there...what will it take to get you out of your arm chair?

Mr.Pickens is out of his....and i'm sure as hell not going to tell him to sit down.

How do the cylindrical wind turbines fare against UFO hits? Apparently, this is an issue in the U.K.

How about Wind Mill powered Air Compressors? Water Pumps? Would that be a simple as bolting an Air, or Water pump to the OutPut Shaft in Place of the Dyno?

I think we're all still here. I know I am and have plenty of friends who are still working towards the greater goal of energy independence. Remember that we are in a major reseeeion right now so don't expect too much from the people as a whole. The process is just that, a process. It will take time for us to accomplish our goal. I personally am hoping that the cost of oil will go back up because it will help speed up the movement but it hurts our pocketbook at the same time. We need to get the Pres. Elect on board as soon as possible. I feel this would be a major plus.

In a review of the true costs of energy generation, Mark Z. Jacobson has released a paper that looks at true cost of alternative energy sources. To do this he looked at how these forms of energy are then used to power vehicles. This is the by far the largest need of energy in our society and it has the largest ecological and environmental impacts of our energy use. His conclusion is that we will need a multi-modal approach but wind energy generation is by far the greenest option. That is followed by concentrated solar collection, that is using mirrors/reflection devices to concentrate the heat of solar radiation to heat a liquid to turn energy turbines. This is exactly the type of research that needs to be done to move us into the future.

Commence Anarchy!!!!

find your place in the future...(any one who thinks someone else is going to do it for them is dead weight)...if nothing else..get the message out.

..Big turbines+big wind = bang/buck. leave the NG in the electrical power pie and promote people powered people transport and community NEV cargo fleets for grid blasting, and pv installations for reduced grid load.use excess capacity as an opportunity to phase out old,non-combined cycle, coal plants. wile phasing in ETT maglev to replace continental flights and interstate traffic.

stop at one consider none = less mouths to feed..(no time for day care or labor/delivery here)

suburban conversion project....suburban basements are reconfigured to earth sheltered green houses for food production..garages become houses with reconstruction leftovers....cold climates get south facing glazings at Latitude +21 degrees...two runs of 6' culvert pipe between basement and garage for thermal transfer.
